The two main islands which make up the group of islands called the British Isles are:
-Great Britain: which has on it three countries: England, Wales and Scotland, and
-Ireland: which is made up of two countries: of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland
The UK (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) is a soveriegn state/country which consists of the countries of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland - in other words the UK consists of all of the island of Great Britain plus the northern part of the island of Ireland.
Yes, in a way the UK is a country of "countries", however in most contexts the UK takes precedence over its substates. If you were to make a list of countries in the world, you would normally list just the UK, and not England, Wales, etc.
The remaining part of the island of Ireland is a fully independent country called the Republic of Ireland.
Normally the terms "(Great) Britain" and the "UK" are somewhat interchangeable - a person from the UK is usually described as "British", when they are not described as "English" or "Welsh", etc. However, take notice that people from Northern Island or any other islands of the UK are not from the island of Great Britain, so this may exclude them somewhat. - rrife, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1Who?
