How Not To Use The Drive Through ATM watch!
break.com — This dummy in a truck doesnt realize that his Dodge Ram is too tall for the drive through ATM Bank Awning. It does not go well.

- Cancerkitty, on 07/11/2008, -3/+48Or just forgot the trailer was as tall as it was. It's easy to do.
- ayeroxor, on 07/11/2008, -2/+138If you're stupid. When I'm in a moving van or towing something, I'm scared ***** about any overhangs within sight. I would creep like a snail around this *****, certainly not just plow the ***** through it.
/2008-07-10: Added '*****' to Firefox built-in dictionary. - yeahaboutthat, on 07/11/2008, -19/+13I agree to some extent, but my big question concerns the overhang itself.
It appears as though the structure was very weak--I mean, a strong burst of wind might have done what that trailer did. - remccain, on 07/11/2008, -50/+5This video should be required viewing for every old fart that purchases a camper for their golden years. The video from the autozone across the street shows the overhang literally smashing the truck like a milk carton. http://youtube.com/watch?v=tQ5mMq0zPes

- ayeroxor, on 07/11/2008, -5/+47"a strong burst of wind might have done what that trailer did."
Please tell me you're kidding and you're not so ***** stupid you think a "gust of wind" has the focused kinetic energy of a solid mass of several tons, with momentum, impacting an area of about one square foot.
Please?
Why do people forget that their CARS, let alone multi-ton trucks with possibly multi-ton trailers, are several tons of moving mass? It will ***** THINGS UP THAT GET IN THE WAY. - Gizza, on 07/11/2008, -1/+3If more people realised that the roads would be a lot safer.
- BTraina, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Regardless if a gust of wind can do that or not, it is very bad engineering. And its not a square foot, the impact area is much larger. Not to mention the energy or your "momentum" looks like it diminishes looking at the truck damage at first contact. What you have to question is why those supports sheared off the roof in the first place, and why isn't there steel composites within that support. If you pause it at 7 seconds in, there is nothing; it just goes to dust.
anyways... That guy is dead.

You've got drive through ATMs in America? Do Americans get out of their car at least once in their lifetime? :)
I tend to believe, that there is a strong positive correlation between the amount of drive through installations and body weight. You just can't blame everything on high fructose corn syrup :)- itsthebrod, on 07/11/2008, -2/+3Why should you have to exit your car for a quick trip to retrieve cash? Otherwise you have to find a parking space, park, turn your car off, go to the ATM machine, go back, start the car again, etc. Drive through ATMs are a great thing.
Now, if you wanted to make fun of drive through liquor stores, then I wouldn't have a problem with that: http://neonpoisoning.blogspot.com/2007/11/drive-th ... - tendonut, on 07/11/2008, -1/+5@isthebrod
Why should you have to get up to go to the fridge? Otherwise, you would have to move your feet in, push up with your legs, arch your back and become upright. Use your left foot to rotate to the right, lift your left leg, place it on the ground, lift your right leg, place it on the ground slightly ahead of the left leg, repeat that over 20 or 30 times, then extend your right arm, close your fingers around the handle, pull the door open, grab the food, close again, and then repeat the whole process in reverse! What a hassle!!!
See? I can make a simple task sound really complex too.
Couldn't you use that "quick trip" excuse for everything? Watch;
"Why should you have to exit your car for a quick trip to retrieve a burger?"
"Why should you have to exit your car for a quick trip to retrieve a coffee?"
"Why should you have to exit your car for a quick trip to retrieve my booze?" - Skorme, on 07/11/2008, -0/+4@itsthebrod:
"Otherwise you have to find a parking space, park, turn your car off, go to the ATM machine, go back, start the car again, etc."
You forgot pants. - ChoiceMad, on 07/11/2008, -1/+1@tendonut
First, finding a parking spot is not always such a 'simple task'. Second, getting up to go to the fridge cannot be equated to getting out of your vehicle to go to the ATM. The fact that someone is driving to an ATM to retrieve money usually means they have something in particular to do whereas 'getting up to go to the fridge' is usually done when in a relaxed situation (like watching tv). i.e. driving somewhere is usually time-relevant more often than getting food while relaxing. - tendonut, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2@ChoiceMad
I'm not saying I don't use drive-up ATMS. They are definitely convenient...but because the walk-up ATM is closer, I barely use the drive-up ones. I've never found a situation where I couldn't find a parking spot..finding a CLOSE parking spot can be difficult, but I don't think walking an extra 6 car lengths is going to kill you...I am amazed at the number of SUV driving mothers that will spend 15 minutes searching for a parking spot 3-5 spots closer then what was available the moment they got there.
The point of comparing it to a fridge is just to show that I can make simple tasks sound like they take a lot of effort just by listing every tiny step required. Does turning off your car really waste time? Would it be faster if you left the car on? - nosecohn, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2I don't live in America and we have drive through ATMs.
- itsthebrod, on 07/11/2008, -2/+3Why should you have to exit your car for a quick trip to retrieve cash? Otherwise you have to find a parking space, park, turn your car off, go to the ATM machine, go back, start the car again, etc. Drive through ATMs are a great thing.

I think i would sue. Dont think it should have come down like that.- honkimon, on 07/11/2008, -3/+138"I think i would sue. Dont think it should have come down like that. "
Why is our society so ***** up? See above in quotes. Douchebag - TheTaoOfBill, on 07/11/2008, -1/+96Sue!? The bank should ***** sue the driver! You should ALWAYS know the clearance of anything you are towing. This was no ones fault but the drivers.

I'm scared to even guess how much of your family is on welfare. - EgaoNoGenki, on 07/11/2008, -2/+16I think not. You'd be dead.
- psion01, on 07/11/2008, -23/+10Nope, that entire structure came down with very little lateral force. It wasn't built right.
- sczzbckt, on 07/11/2008, -2/+23So its the banks fault that some idiot just drove a trailer into their building?
- audiodude34, on 07/11/2008, -22/+7Because it is reasonable to expect that an accident of this nature might occur, and therefore a breach of duty by the persons who built the structure to not make it strong enough to not collapse completely in such a case.
- theOster, on 07/11/2008, -2/+24"very little lateral force"? are you kidding me? a (sizable) gas-powered vehicle drove into it. cantilevers are not designed to withstand lateral shear. period. as mentioned, the responsibility is with the driver in knowing his clearance. it's like me smashing a glass into my head and suing the glass manufacturer because it broke.
i'm somewhat playing devils advocate here, since i've always been exposed to the "design for stupidity" rule in practice. and i usually take the stance of "everything should be made of over-reinforced cast in place concrete to eliminate any question of danger.
designing for "normal use" is pretty much gone. "designing for idiots" is in. - EntangledPhysx, on 07/11/2008, -15/+2I'm amazed at how many civil engineers are replying to this thread! WOW!!! Next time a structure is built, god do I hope they come to you guys for suggestions!
/sarcasm - theOster, on 07/11/2008, -9/+5ok - to all those that say it should've withstood the impact - are you seriously thinking that the truck should've started spinning its wheels? or that it kind of hits it and then bumps backward a little like in cartoons? think of how much weight is moving forward at what looks like about 10-15 mph. thats an amazing amount of force moving forward via a combustion engine, contacting the ground via rubber tires that are designed to grip.
i challenge anyone to sit on the hood of a car and have your friend drive forward at 5mph and hit the brakes just to see how amazing the forces are.
anyway, i'm a bit tipsy and realize that i've posted many many comments to this thread. i just think that people don't realize the forces involved in a moving vehicle. if it was a kid on a bike, no prob, but a truck with a trailer? way different.
ok, im done.
(no i'm not - entangledphysx, it's not a civil issue, it would be a structural engineer. get your jokes right :) - sleepwalkers, on 07/11/2008, -2/+2@audiodude34: By that logic, let's just eliminate all drive-thru and pull-up services, period, because it's plausible that if one were to apply a large amount of force to the roofs of any particular establishment, it would fall.
- GeorgeStone2, on 07/11/2008, -1/+7Why do drive throughs even need roofs? To keep your arm dry?
***** pathetic.

"HIS SON AND HIM [SIC] SURVIVED.
FROM SHELBY COUNTY TODAY:
At approximately 3 PM, Tuesday, July 2, a 2008 Dodge Ram 2500, pulling
a new travel trailer, hit the corner of the Texas State Bank Drive-In
on Tenaha Street, causing the complete awning to come to the ground.
Luckily, the driver of the Dodge, Mickey Miller, of Garrison and his
10 year old son were able to exit their vehicle uninjured.
According to Miller he was circling the bank to park on the other side
when the corner of his travel trailer caught the corner of the bank
awning. Next thing he heard was a rumble as the awning started falling
against his driver's side door. Somehow he was able to unbuckle the
seat beat and exit the other side of his truck as it was falling.
Mark Ivy of Texas State Bank stated that the main lobby would be open
for business while the drive-in is being repaired. "- Elliuotatar, on 07/11/2008, -0/+15He moved quick enough to get out and survive that? Wow!

Wow, what a dick.
Maybe you need money when you happen to be in your car and you don't feel like spending 15 minutes looking for a parking place. You can call that lazy but I'll just go ahead and call it logical. - eviljolly, on 07/11/2008, -1/+2At the risk of being dugg down, I somewhat agree with sphigel.
Although it has never taken me 15 minutes to find a parking place at my bank, it does take more time to stop your car unbuckle, get out, make the transaction, and get back to your car and start it again. Using a drive-thru ATM isn't laziness, it's EFFICIENCY.
I personally rarely use drive thru, even for food, but it does save wear and tear on your vehicle if you don't have to constantly stop/start the engine. And some people wonder why their starter goes out in the first 40K miles of owning their vehicle... - faatbuddha, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2If you've ever spent any time looking at a drive-thru ATM's patrons, you start to realize they're, on the whole, lazy fat-asses.

At very worst, the ceiling may have hit around the driver's shoulder area, but I don't think this accident was fatal. You'll also notice that the trailer hit the roof on the very edge, and it looks a bit wider than the car as well.
I doubt they were trying to use the ATM driving at that speed and that far away, just trying to get around but misjudged the ceiling. - moviscop, on 07/11/2008, -0/+510HIS SON AND HIM SURVIVED.
Mark Ivy of Texas State Bank stated that the main lobby would be open
for business while the drive-in is being repaired.- CosmicJustice, on 07/11/2008, -30/+18Dugg you up for the information but seriously, "His son and him survived"????

- mrASSMAN, on 07/11/2008, -1/+12That was a heavy-duty truck (and apparently accelerating .. likely with a V-8 engine over 200 HP) with a large and heavy trailer attached.. awnings aren't built to withstand great forces, it isn't really structurally connected to the actual building so it's basically just there to shelter the area from rain and sun. Awnings are one of the first things to go in wind-storms and hurricanes..
- SatansSpatula, on 07/11/2008, -2/+3Dude, it was a *trailer*. Do you have any idea how weakly constructed trailers are? Look into it, it's amazing.
- Zlorp, on 07/11/2008, -0/+4over 200 hp? this isnt 1988, 4 cylinders have that kind of power these days. if its a v8 it has at least 300. but chances are that its a diesel with 300+ hp and 600ft lbs of torque.
just in case anyone cared to know - mrASSMAN, on 07/11/2008, -1/+4Zlorp.. yeah I know, I was just underestimating, most likely has 300 or more. I said over 200 because it varies depending on the model.
- mojoface, on 07/11/2008, -2/+1@ Zlorp "at least 300" is greater than (over) 200.
- timsline, on 07/11/2008, -0/+4Did you see how that awning crushed everything underneath it? That structure had some serious weight to it, or else it would have just laid on top of that truck. A structure that heavy should have had much more support. Any one under that awning could have easily been killed.
- Renster84, on 07/11/2008, -5/+8That is the american way.
Sue the person for building a building that collasped when YOU drove into it. It seems totally crazy that anyone can get by in that kind of society.

When that truck hits the awning it is creating a huge reaction force at the base of the pillar. There is no way it should have been able to withstand those types of horizontal loadings.

- BikerDude69, on 07/11/2008, -4/+46I agree with mrfreeziexp. This looks like defective contruction. There should have been supports at the far corners as well as stronger support throught. The awning looks far too heavy for what little weak brick supports it had.
- pizpot, on 07/11/2008, -0/+7the bolts of the supports would just rip out. there needed to be a major diagonal x, and I doubt that is in the code. however, driving has rules to cover this.
The solution is to put cement filled poles in the ground protecting the structure.- pizpot, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1cement filled poles protecting the building would do it
- Elliuotatar, on 07/11/2008, -2/+2Uh, what good would cement poles have done to stop a vehicle which is too tall from hitting THE CEILING?
/edit
I guess if his goal was to drive around the awning though, rather than under it, poles would have helped, but it would still leave it vulnerable to this sort of failure if someone did intentionally try to go under it. - Hurricane, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Cement filled poles are standard around here.
- ThaDRD, on 07/11/2008, -0/+5Even fake columns at the corners would have helped them steer wider than the awning, which they were trying to do according to the article.
- yuanzhoulu, on 07/11/2008, -0/+7most awnings are constructed the same way, i can tell you that.
yes, it's bad construction. realistically you want thin aluminum on top, not solid rock on top.
but this country's building codes are written by losers, they also go overboard with safety on other issues but not the most basic ones.
- pizpot, on 07/11/2008, -0/+7the bolts of the supports would just rip out. there needed to be a major diagonal x, and I doubt that is in the code. however, driving has rules to cover this.

- Khanvalescent, on 07/11/2008, -1/+16I could only view the story on Shelby County's webpage through google cache. There were a few aftermath pictures, and the ceiling landed on the rear corner of the truck cab, just barely missing the driver and passenger section.

- exomni, on 07/11/2008, -9/+24Not fake, by the way. This happened in Shelby County (only in Texas). The dumbass driver was actually not trying to go through the drive-in ATM, but hit the corner of the awning as he was driving around the side of the bank. He and his ten-year-old son escaped unscathed.
""At approximately 3 PM, Tuesday, July 2, a 2008 Dodge Ram 2500, pulling a new travel trailer, hit the corner of the Texas State Bank Drive-In on Tenaha Street, causing the complete awning to come to the ground. Luckily, the driver of the Dodge, Mickey Miller, of Garrison and his 10 year old son were able to exit their vehicle uninjured.
""According to Miller he was circling the bank to park on the other side when the corner of his travel trailer caught the corner of the bank awning. Next thing he heard was a rumble as the awning started falling against his driver's side door. Somehow he was able to unbuckle the seat beat and exit the other side of his truck as it was falling.
""Mark Ivy of Texas State Bank stated that the main lobby would be open for business while the drive-in is being repaired.""

- WTFppl, on 07/11/2008, -6/+8I've driven motor-homes for years for an RV sales lot, I always double & triple think of my clearances on both sides and top.
This guy is an idiot, for, from the CCTv-cam you can obviously see the shadow of the awning on the motor hood. That should have been enough indication that his vehicle was too close, not to mention the fact the the old fart was doing at least 15 to 20 mph near a building with an over hang. Furthermore, I hope the gentleman who was driving is made to pay all of the damages that were caused to the bank, for negligence. Even more so, I hope his son learned a valuable lesson from his father! - Hypomanic, on 07/11/2008, -1/+24This happened in Center, Texas. I can say from experience: this town is full of morons.
- weech, on 07/11/2008, -3/+0Don't mess with Texas.
- BossKey, on 07/11/2008, -0/+15That explains a lot, since Center, Texas is nowhere near the center of Texas.
- OpCzar, on 07/11/2008, -5/+4"drive through ATM"
Never seen one of those... I just use Interac. - X9001, on 07/11/2008, -10/+2Wonder if the driver lived?...
- Ymeg, on 07/11/2008, -2/+17What the hell? How could anyone build that with such weak structural integrity?
- alexpigment, on 07/11/2008, -2/+3well to be fair, it's only held up by a few beams so that people can drive under it and that all cars can be seen visibly from the teller window. if you think about it logically, i doubt there are many with the "structural integrity" to survive that sort of forward-moving force. i'll let you break out the paper and do the physics work
- Ymeg, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2If you are assuming that that is the only way to build the overhead, then it would be difficult.
There are different building models that would have prevented this. - alexpigment, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1It's not the only way to build one, I'm just saying many are built like this out of utility, so it's not like this one is way subpar. The real issue is that it's just being pushed forward with a decent amount of momentum. That type of force is hard to stand up against unless you have diagonal support beams (which would take the forward moving force on the roof and direct it into the ground, which can't move), which I have NEVER seen on a bank drive thru. I would love to draw you a diagram and show you how the force is distributed, but I feel like I'm pretty clear here.
EXAMPLE: screw the legs of a table into the ground, then fall on it. It likely not break if you fall on top of it (DIRECTLY on top of it). Fall against it at an angle and it will likely break and fall in the same way this building does. Lastly, push the table sideways, and it will take significantly less force for it to break. It's just physics.
- Ymeg, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2If you are assuming that that is the only way to build the overhead, then it would be difficult.
- SeanRoss, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2I was thinking the same thing, who the heck built that... I'm scared to go under any drive-thru ATMs now.
Why did they not reinforce the pillars with Poles further in the ground? It looks like they just started the pillars by building the bricks above ground.
