- deweyhewson, on 06/25/2009, -3/+58Cosby is one of the greatest comedians ever. One of the reasons for this is his establishment of himself as a successful comedian, who happened to be black, in a time of major racial unrest. He wasn't a good "black comedian", he was a good "comedian". Period.
I remember growing up listening to Cosby's tapes during long car rides on family trips, or laying in bed at night, and loving his brilliant storytelling.
Most minority comedians today try to capitalize on their "victim" status and make only racist jokes, or jokes where they can get away with saying "*****" or "wetback". Somehow these people who haven't had to deal with 90% of the racist ***** of fifty years ago have decided that complaining about their "victimhood" is hilarious. Cosby, who actually did live through that period, never stoops to that.
And, most importantly, he is actually funny.
Does this sound like a euology? It's not. Cosby is still alive, and I paid over $100 to see him perform a few years ago. The vast majority of the time he talked about old people who were nearly 4 times my age and whom I couldn't relate to, and it was still funnier than all of the stage-flopping microphone-yelling joke-stealing "jokes" of today's hipster "comedians". - blackinthmiddle, on 06/25/2009, -2/+32This man has to be one of the greatest comedians ever. Not quite 40 years old, I still remember to this day when I was a little kid in the 70s and my older sister was picking me up from kindergarden. The bus driver refused to let us on the bus, but wouldn't tell us why. The bus was only half full (with all white people), yet we had this angry bus driver simply telling us, YOU CAN'T COME ON THE BUS!!!"
Quite frankly, I was too young and naive to know what racism was and never felt that there was a barrier in front of me. Imagine knowing every day of your life you're being judged on a physical feature you have zero control over which is an extra hurdle to overcome. The man is a hero in my book. - irishemperor, on 06/25/2009, -2/+26Zip Zop Zooby Dee Bop
- blackinthmiddle, on 06/25/2009, -2/+21He seems too goofy? You mean when he's trying to make people laugh? Was he acting too goofy when he was at Morehouse college, imploring the black students there to be an example of model citizenry and not feel the need to play into racial stereotypes? Because he does a few commercials, you think he's goofy? Look at the man's life. He's anything but goofy.
- milliamp, on 06/25/2009, -6/+21I think I liked him better here. He seems a little too goofy now, it is kind of refreshing to see him talking like a normal person.
- Codik, on 06/25/2009, -2/+17The tone of the interview makes me realise how much ground has been covered by the US in the past 46 years.
- muleskinner, on 06/25/2009, -1/+15Um...He's not dead....
- govsucks, on 06/25/2009, -1/+12"The man is a hero in my book."
Absolutely, I grew up watching this man, he has given me countless laughs and didn't have to say ***** or ***** to do it. A real gentleman, I agree with you 100%.
As for your story, what kind of mindwashing does a human being have to go through to tell two tiny little children they can't get on a bus? Racial collectivists are disgusting. - duncan202, on 06/25/2009, -0/+11My brother and I used to listen to his tapes at night when we were young. Good stuff.
- ziptnf, on 06/25/2009, -1/+11I respect that, man, I apologize you had to deal with such racial injustice. I hope your life has since taken a turn for the better!

The snowball he saves all winter to get back at Jr. Barnes. only to find in the mid-July summer heat of Philly that his mother has thrown it away so he goes out and spits on him instead.
My grandmother still has vinyl copies of these. - frontaxle, on 06/25/2009, -3/+9The Jello tree was just a sapling!

- RobertWright, on 08/13/2009, -8/+13At 27 year old, Bill Cosby was and remain to be very intelligent!! Hey, Hey Hey!!!!!!!
- 1jaxstate1, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4LOL, he may act goofy when in character. But when off screen, he's a dead serious dude. One of the coolest an realest people out there.
- jordanmoore, on 06/25/2009, -3/+7That thumbnail is simply amazing
- jba68, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4Chill out man. Most of the interview or acts from Cosby do have a goofy, comic spin.
Of course he has his serious moments, and experiences. But he made a living as a comic. I'm a huge fan of Cosby, but yea, the guy is goofy. He's a comic ,but that being said I believe that you have to be pretty intelligent to be a good comic. You have to stay on top of events to remain funny, and deliver it in a fashion that isn't boring. ....
That isn't meant to belittle him... - blackinthmiddle, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4Well the good thing is I was too young and stupid to know what was going on, so I never internalized it as a negative experience. I still remember thinking, "Ok, when does the next bus come?" lol, what are you going to do?
- solid12345, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4But he is still dead with us in spirit!
- itsme7g, on 06/25/2009, -1/+4I am also close to 40 and can remember being a kid and not having any worries about racism. This wasn't from being naive though. One of the things my parents really did well was to raise me in a way that made me think all people were equal without making a big deal about it. Kids accept what is around them and go with the flow.
Now when I look back at my high school years I can see that there was a large percentage of black students (maybe 40%) and I had plenty of black friends and yet at the time I never thought about how many whites vs blacks there were or even how many friends I had that were black. It was a non issue.
As a little background, my mom was born in the middle of racist Alabama and even had a black nanny. To go from this to having kids that really didn't see color as a divisive wedge in one generation is a great thing. - blackinthmiddle, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3@jba68
Ok, point taken. - emkaysmith, on 06/25/2009, -2/+5I was in college in 1963 and I was a fan of Cosby's stand-up routines. My friends and I could all recite them to each other. ("Hey, hey, hey, . . . Fat Albert!") Then, as he got older and became a professional "spokesman," he started taking himself way too seriously. And became much less funny.
- evil-doer, on 06/25/2009, -1/+4im sorry but i have to point out that "circa" means approximately. this isnt circa 1963, this IS 1963 exactly.
- Th3_anOmoLy, on 06/25/2009, -3/+6With stuff like this CBC retro bites may be my new favorite youtube clips
Seriously, this stuff is awesome:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBns9GGbz6Q&fea ... - Myztry, on 06/25/2009, -1/+3Goofy? Compared to Jerry Lewis, Bill Cosby can't every really be called goofy.
- DoktorRob, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2Ah, yes. I still get a grin on my face just thinking about when I was a kid in the 70's, when my parents' friends would get together to play cards and all of the kids would go and listen to Cosby albums.
The Chicken Heart...
The burning sofa...
"Ok snakes, I'm going to stick my foot out. If you're down there, just give me a little snaky kiss, OK?"
and later, in the 80's
"I thought my name was 'Jesus Christ!"
"Don't you EVER let your brains fall out AGAIN!"
"My bottom liBip iBis on the floBor!"
Timeless. - jbmcb, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2@Yups
The vinyl copies are the best.
Other comedians are amazed that Cosby can go onstage and just talk for two or three hours and get incredible laughs, most find it hard putting an hour of material together. Carlin could do the same thing, but it was more rambling than Cosby, not as well put together. - overkil6, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2Do you ever get this feeling that when Robin Williams is at home he just yells in the mirror? I've never seen an interview with him where he either doesn't hijack it, jump up and dance/sing, or run around doing voices. I'm pretty sure no one really knows who this man is as a result...
- LargeStack, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2This clip is heart wrenching.
Cosby on how kids see themselves.
He sure did much more than I remember and I grew up on him. - solid12345, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2I admit I LOL'ed
- leif77, on 06/25/2009, -1/+2He was so unbelievably dry it was hilarious... This is the funniest clip of him I've ever seen...
- sphigel, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1and yet when he referred to himself as an American Negro all I could think was how much more accurate that term is than African American.
- blackinthmiddle, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1No need to apologize. People are people. Some are good, some are bad. Race is just a tool. If it wasn't that, evil people would use something else. Such is life.
- chubbstar, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1CBC is awesome. i think its great theyre posting all these old clips from their archives on youtube.

- SkippyDoorknob, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Yeah, but *when* in 1963? What month? day? minute? nanosecond?
- Bolinoak, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1In high school I had a creative writing class and at one point we got to comedy. We talked about funny movies and funny books and even wrote a few funny things ourselves. But our teacher wanted us to see some comedians as well. Well she had an old Cosby tape from the 80's and she played it for us.
I could not believe the level of comedy that man has. His ability to make our class laugh so hysterically was just utterly amazing. Thanks to the tape I laugh every time I go to the dentist now. - etx313, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Ya See!
- s0nicfreak, on 06/25/2009, -1/+2Hard to believe Bill Cosby was young once.

- dmax801, on 06/25/2009, -1/+1I've got a pretty good sense of humor, and a good sense of how to tell a joke because of Cosby and Carlin. Those two guys were the ones who took boring, trite stand up and made it intelligent, acceptable, and thought-provoking. (Others, like Sahl and Bruce were good, but couldn't get their material to be mainstream where it would have the most impact.)
My kids don't appreciate the material as much as I, just like they don't appreciate the Beatles as much as I. There's a certain amount of "you don't know what it was like BEFORE!" that makes these guys - and this guy in particular - so special. - etx313, on 06/25/2009, -1/+1Ya see rudy, theo, I am your father.
- mtdna, on 06/25/2009, -5/+5A genuinely interesting interview on TV? I'm shocked.
Why can't it just be an ass-kissing glorified movie advertisement? You know, like we have now? - waisosrs, on 06/25/2009, -1/+1Richard Alpert
- mtdna, on 06/25/2009, -4/+3Cool. What TV show is that? Who's the interviewer?
