- ajde, on 10/06/2008, -3/+38I'm in the business of helping sick people, global health stuff... But if you stick around long enough (say, having to do a daily survey on a particular street where the transients first confront you angrily about why you're hanging out on their turf and gradually accept you enough to boast about their conquests) you start to hear about the mother of two and former manager of a Wal-Mart who tried crack one day and now turns tricks and lives behind some bushes. Or the dude who makes more hustling people for their pity than the rest of us would at an average job. Some of these people seriously need help - but a lot of them just end up messed up on drugs and addicted to the hustle. And believe me, before I did that survey, I gave out plenty of money to bums.
- Lungkisser, on 10/06/2008, -4/+36When/if tragedy ever strikes, this guy is gonna be ready while the rest of us are crying in front of our computers that are without internet (or power!)

- mutt2jeff, on 10/06/2008, -0/+29I have never understood why a lot of people are so offended by homeless people having dogs. First of all, its highly unlikely that they went out and paid for the animal, it was homeless just like the person. Secondly, its a mutually beneficial relationship. The dog and the man both have a best friend. The dog isn't starving, hit by a car, or dead, so it clearly better of than most abandoned pets. The man has a companion, a feeling that something really cares about them (which many of the homeless lack) and something to devote themselves to other than the bottle or drugs, which seems to make him significantly better of than most homeless people. I have never seen a homeless man with a dog that didn't look very well taken care of, happy and well behaved.
- Rivetgeek, on 10/06/2008, -2/+30he named his dog spliff... somehow that seems so appropriate
- popstation, on 10/06/2008, -4/+31This is no homeless dude, its a professional killer. Thats a camo suit he is got on and the dog is packing the heat.
- inactive, on 10/06/2008, -1/+27That was the first ***** thing I thought
- solidus636, on 10/06/2008, -0/+24Woah. You just blew my mind.
- thegrantman, on 10/06/2008, -0/+23They sink.
- firedrillduckie, on 10/06/2008, -8/+31That's actually pretty heartwarming.
Ironically enough. - JohnFlux, on 10/06/2008, -2/+24"When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint.
When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a Communist."
-- Hélder Câmara (archbishop) - LR2_, on 10/06/2008, -0/+22This immediately reminded me of Mitch Hedburg for some reason. Thanks.
- Mujokan, on 10/06/2008, -3/+24And his dog can run Crysis
- terminal157, on 10/06/2008, -2/+23Individuals doing good on their own volition with their own money is not socialism. More rich people need to understand this. And more people in general.
- oveedrx, on 10/06/2008, -1/+21not weird, people at a higher position tend to think that people below them have a better life then they do
- ParanoydAndroid, on 10/06/2008, -2/+21I find it odd that people say things like that. I obviously can't say you're wrong because that guy may be incredibly happy, or you may have an incredibly ***** life, but I still think it's odd.
They say money can't buy happiness, and as far as I'm concerned that's 99% *****. Money in the bank gives me security, money in my pocket allows me to do things I enjoy (movies, amusement parks, vacations, etc ..), buy things I enjoy (good food, video games, etc ...). I make this money by doing a job that's in a field I love (IT), with co-workers who are pretty good people to be stuck with for 8 hours.
You always hear people talking about consumerism and "is that new gadget _really_ making you happy?" And I, having honestly considered this question before, can say yes. I feel genuinely happy when I (e.g.) get a new part for my PC. I get the joy of ownership, the joy of installing it (I really do like working on computers), the frustration of it not working - followed by the joy when I finally get it to work, the pride that I built it, and the joy from the continued use of this part and the new capabilities it provides.
Don't get me wrong, I understand there's also non-purchasable sources of happiness. I also love the feeling of falling asleep with someone and that comfortable "just being there" feeling you get with someone you love - but these situations where money really can't buy happiness are parallel considerations to the rest of my emotional life, not prerequisites for experiencing it.
In other words, too many people treat work like it's something you do so you can live, instead of as part of life you can actually enjoy participating in. I don't see any reason to be unhappy with a succesfull, professional lifestyle that allows you to buy things, meet people, etc ...
Also, I have heat - and that makes me happy too. Although I don't (yet) have a dog ... so he does have one up on me there. - MoFoKeR, on 10/06/2008, -4/+22guy loves his dog, heres my change sir.
- Allivian, on 10/06/2008, -1/+18
Theres a Burger King by my bands practice space and I remember talking to this guy who used to be married but lost his job, house then wife.
The only thing he had left was a savings account and his dog.
People are seeping more and more into poverty and it doesn't take much to wander into a ghetto.
We're looking more like a third world country everyday.
Sad thing - XSDX3R0, on 10/06/2008, -1/+18that was pretty sweet, even if that man is cold as ***** he still let his dog have something to wear
- aznpwnzor, on 10/06/2008, -10/+26Socialism ftw?
- DieselGrunge, on 10/06/2008, -0/+16Nah I think the dog looks more like Sean Connery.
- grizzlybrice, on 10/06/2008, -0/+16ROOFL
- flamesoftheend, on 10/06/2008, -0/+15I bet he makes the dog peddle for money too!
- NicoNicoNico, on 10/06/2008, -0/+15What does Burger King have to do with that story?
I know what you mean, though. I have a friend who lost his health, job, house, cars, kids, then wife. He didn't even have a savings account because his wife drained that before he left. The saddest thing about this is that there are people blaming him for his troubles, calling him lazy or foolish (even though all that mess started when he became sick), when in actuality we're all only a few month's paychecks away from that same situation. -
