- andoru, on 09/01/2008, -0/+47Titan Quest is a very well-produced piece of software - it looks fantastic (with the exception of the noted lack of blood and gore), it performs well on modest hardware, and there's great variety in the character classes and abilities. I have installed it about 5 or 6 times, got really excited about developing a character, played through to about the 2nd act - and then, every time, the game gets really stale, and I quit playing. You pick up loot so quickly that you have to have to teleport back to town after every fight. You sell items for gold, but there doesn't seem to be anything worthwhile to spend your gold on. Each area seems just a bit too big, with too much walking and fighting between the interesting bits. Because every item you pick up is kind of "meh", there's little incentive to keep going. Your character abilities are a bit too powerful, making every single fight (except for some of the bosses) rather easy and boring.
Bring on Diablo III. - Final2, on 09/01/2008, -2/+37Titan's Quest is by far the best one, behind Diablo of course.
- Slashered, on 09/01/2008, -1/+30it's really too bad about Mythos
- upick, on 09/02/2008, -3/+26Nothing beats diablo!
And nothing will when D3 comes out - whaleyboy, on 09/02/2008, -0/+19NOX from Westwood Studios should be on the list! Great game and I remember being very impressed by the realtime POV system it had.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8ub7msfpnI&feature ... - Lasserith, on 09/02/2008, -1/+19I can't wait for Sacred 2, glad to see Sacred 1 got the credit it deserves :D
- Acglaphotis, on 09/02/2008, -1/+17It lists the *good* clones.
- Ismith988, on 09/02/2008, -1/+17No Darkstone? It wasn't as dark as Diablo but it sure had some improvements Diablo 2 sure could have used.
- bioncinola, on 09/02/2008, -2/+16Fate is still the best diablo clone in singleplayer mode - in fact the graphics and gameplay smoothness beat out diablo 2 abd Dungeon Seige 2..
As for the others: Divine Divinity has a stodgy gameplay; Sacred has only 8 ways for your character to move and attack (lame); Titan Quest - wow crashes quite a lot and is a bit stodgy; finally DS 2 -very nice but adds nothing new.
Fate at least has amusing characters and you can go fishing. Darkstone's graphics suck too bad tho it is really a good game.
ALSO - look at Dungeon Lords - now fully patched and workable and has the best combat movement and combo style out there. - hardcorerikki, on 09/02/2008, -1/+14Darkstone was a formidable Diablo-like.
Not in list? Blasphemy !! - jimmick, on 09/02/2008, -2/+14Wow, that clip of Titan quest looked a tad lame, was he hitting the monsters?
Or just stroking the air in front of them. - Thepirateking, on 09/02/2008, -1/+11Titan Quest just doesn't have that ...I don't know what it is, I guess Polished feeling that I feel with Diablo II. That being said, playing it multiplayer is great fun.
- ceredron, on 09/02/2008, -1/+10top 5 best. Ahem.
- SolInvictus, on 09/02/2008, -1/+10Hopefully we'll see something decent out of Runic. And HOPEFULLY it won't come out after Diablo III.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -0/+8Let's not forget the classic:
http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/167/ ... - Thepirateking, on 09/02/2008, -0/+8Darkstone was a blast back in the day. I still listen to that song from it from time to time, and the mods people made were pretty crazy. I had a great deal of fun playing that one.,
- biggbear, on 09/02/2008, -0/+8Isn't "Top 5 Best" a little redundant?
- rironin, on 09/02/2008, -0/+8Did those videos really need the Linkin Park background music?
- SolInvictus, on 09/02/2008, -0/+7I didn't play Darkstone, so I didn't think it'd be fair to put it on the list. But in all fairness to the game, it's pretty damn old and doesn't come with all the niceties of the newer games.
- Bebel, on 09/02/2008, -1/+8It's trash.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -2/+9no its why diablo3 will succeed. u fail
- AmyVernon, on 09/02/2008, -2/+9Sacred ftw!
- dexaroni, on 09/02/2008, -2/+7Dugg for "Milky teat"
- shutaro, on 09/02/2008, -3/+8Heh... You said stroking...
- AnotherDiggGuy, on 09/02/2008, -0/+5I think I'll just wait for the real deal to come out.
- ChaoticInfinity, on 09/02/2008, -1/+6DARKSTONE should've been top 3 at least. And Nox was huge too. This list is a sham...
- gothsquirrel, on 09/02/2008, -0/+5I play diablo 2 in ubuntu just install wine.
- madeingermany, on 09/02/2008, -3/+8Isn't Hellgate: London a Diablo clone as well?
It got Wirt's leg after all! ;) - jesperhh, on 09/02/2008, -0/+5I'm playing through Titan Quest for the first time atm, and it's great. It's just a shame that they introduced a bug in the expansion that slow downs the game to a crawl once in a while..
- johnroth, on 09/02/2008, -0/+5Thats funny, but it needs lewt! It's not D2 without phat lewts!
- h4mx0r, on 09/02/2008, -1/+5Diablo 4 will. Like, once we're old and dead.
- Browzer, on 09/02/2008, -1/+5NOX was such an underrated game. I still stand by my comment that it was better than Diablo 2.
- johnroth, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4It also let you make a character who was retarded. Greatly reduced intelligence stat but gave you greatly improved character interaction, since you were "special".
- modix, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4Get the fan patch for the game. It clears up 99.9% of the bugs in the game. Once you've played it awhile, you might consider the balancing patch as well. It may sound like fun to have -100% recharge and -100% mana costs, but it kind of makes the end of the game a little ridiculous. Often times your damage done is more dependent on how fast your graphics card can produce the crazy flying projectiles.
- bmc152006, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4yeah really, i hope mythos comes back.
- cthellis, on 09/02/2008, -1/+5No Darkstone, no cookie, sorry. 8-P
It leapfrogged Diablo in many a way, back in the day. "Modern" and "polished" doesn't mean a whole helluva lot, considering how poor Dungeon Siege, DS2, and now even Space Siege are overall. (Well, the multiplayer at least. Which is what we play these games for.)
I'd STILL want to play Darkstone over most of the games listed. Heh... Though I'm at least enjoying Titan Quest enough with my friends. - SeekerDarksteel, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4Errm....Arcanum was a fallout clone, not a diablo clone.
- frmatc, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4Seconded.
Dugg article and your comment for Sacred. Great game. The dragon battles were well worth the admission. - aaabatteries, on 09/02/2008, -1/+4Not everyone is an extrovert. There is some pride to be had in personal accomplishment without advertisement of the fact to others.
- peterinjapan, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3There's even a Diablo clone that's a hentai game. Amazing...
http://www.jlist.com/PRODUCT/p011 - SolInvictus, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3Agreed. Fate was awesome. Mythos took that awesomeness and made it even better. Too bad Mythos is dead. :(
And hey, DS2 added some really cool pets. You could level them up in special ways. - DekarCorvus, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3i can't believe fate is not on the list. sure its not as dark...but its diablo in every way, WITH improvements...and a fricking pet that transforms!
- Gizza, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3I bet they're kicking themselves now that they left the most successful company in the industry to make a game that totally tanked.
- msimeth, on 09/02/2008, -1/+4You forgot.
"Diablo walks the Earth"
The Diablo clone within the game itself - LordPengwin, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3Funny, I always thought that Diablo was a clone of Nethack, which of course was a clone of Rogue.
- cquilliam, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3I can't even play non-ladder, it just doesn't feel right
- Gizza, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3I'm surprised to find so many people that don't realise you can hold your mouse button down for every task. Click once and drag it around to move. Click once and hold down til an enemy is dead to attack. If you're a caster and don't even need to select enemies you can just about play the whole game by just holding down the mouse button.
- bdickason, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3We were fine on like the last 10 diggs :( Not sure why this one hit us so hard. Trying to fix now.
- maisteri, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3All is not lost, for Hanbitsoft still may revive Mythos. And I hope they will, Mythos was great fun :(
- GothAlice, on 09/02/2008, -1/+4It kicked Diablo II's ass for a very large number of reasons, not the least of which would be the underlying graphics engine and multiplayer for its time.
Inter-organization copyright politics killed it, sadly. ***** EA. -
