- Slovenian6474, on 02/09/2009, -4/+84"...of all time from the '80s"
then it's not really 'of all time' then is it? - Jericho6, on 02/09/2009, -0/+21Sim City was a huge time waster for me, loved that game. So was Civilization and Railroad Tycoon, although those probably came out in the 90s. Not always sure of the release dates, but when I think 80s games, I think of King's Quest and Zork. Classics!
- kiffar, on 02/10/2009, -0/+17Oh man I ***** loved Sid Meiers Pirates
- HallsOfMandos, on 02/10/2009, -2/+17Karateka? Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? I am probably forgetting others as well...
My lawn, get off it. - aceofhertz, on 02/10/2009, -0/+13That's actually a great list... would have liked to see a title from the Space Quest genre in there, but you can't please everyone. Wasteland was great and brought forth the Fallout series... and I can't even remember how many times I replayed Pirates.
- TonyTheTerrible, on 02/10/2009, -0/+13Thank you gamespy; a single list with a sentence of explanation followed by page long articles on each game.
- fedak, on 02/10/2009, -0/+12Not a bad list, actually.
Note that it actually appears to be a *PC* list, which intentionally leaves out some obvious Apple II, Commodore, Mac, titles. - Scoobysnax, on 02/10/2009, -1/+11What no Dungeon Master?
- vondrak, on 02/10/2009, -1/+11Beyond Castle Wolfenstein should be on there too.
And I'd love to see Wasteland re-released, getting the dos stuff to work is a pain in the ass. - Moisgreat, on 02/10/2009, -1/+10What about Miner 49er?
- Myztry, on 02/10/2009, -0/+9Where's the circa 1985 Amiga's games? The list wasn't restricted to IBM PC compatibles.
Some of these games where classics, but many were lame in comparison to:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUoJBerFDsA - kolop1, on 02/10/2009, -2/+10Oregon trail FTW.
- MCA2142, on 02/10/2009, -3/+1160% of the time, that title works everytime
- Pyros7, on 02/10/2009, -0/+8Sadly I didn't get to play Maniac Mansion until it came out on the NES, but it was a surprisingly fun game. Each character had their own talents, and any group you picked was capable of finding their own way to the ending.
Although I'm still pissed that there was no use for the chainsaw in the kitchen. I must have spent hours trying to figure out how to get that thing off the wall, fire it up and run amok in the house.
And it never occurred to me that the arcade machine in the game room titled "Tuna Diver" (or something to that effect) could have a second meaning. I was such a naive kid. - TrevorBradley, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7M.U.L.E. rules them all... Dani Bunten will be missed.
- keozen, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7Dugg for the list being all on one page
...and nostalga - sdellboy, on 02/10/2009, -1/+8Elite on a BBC B computer loading off a tape deck....ahhh...good times.
- bigbangbuddha, on 02/10/2009, -0/+6dugg for zork
- PottSie2, on 02/10/2009, -0/+6Damn, the Secret of Monkey Island misses out by a year!
- WasabiHound, on 02/10/2009, -0/+6Used to play Civilisation all the time - amazing how "Just one more turn" turned into eight hours of play. Same with the original Warcraft (I remember a few late nights or early mornings that time too). Just checked out they are games of the 90s! But not going to let it stop me - my list of the 90s would include:
Civilisation
X-wing (one of the best space fighter simulations - where have they gone)
Warcraft
Dune (one of the first RTS) - think that was a 90s game
Command and Conquer
Wolfenstein (I still get headaches thinking about the green walls)
Spacehulk
Duke Nuk'em - used to sneak into work to play that (graphics were average - no specialised video card)
The graphics weren't always great but the gameplay was great (even if from time to time the AI was, well, straining)
da*n can't remember the others... - nublet, on 02/10/2009, -0/+6what happened to the police quest and space quest series? =/
- dbbblondon, on 02/10/2009, -0/+6Elite was my #1 for many years, here are the web pages for Ian Bell one of the developers, many old versions can be downloaded for free.
http://www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/ - Stumped, on 02/10/2009, -0/+6While not strictly a PC game I loved International Karate+ on the C64.
Also a great scifi strategy game called Millennium 2.2.
I found a link to a flash remake of IK+ at http://ant.simianzombie.com/games/ik/ik.php - paulsmith288, on 02/10/2009, -0/+6dugg for populous
- peterinjapan, on 02/10/2009, -0/+6M.U.L.E.! Archon! Where's Shamus? Guess they couldn't give all the slots to old EA.
- eobet, on 02/10/2009, -0/+5I never knew that M.U.L.E. was availible for the PC, and the source for the picture they use, Mobygames, does not have information regarding a PC version either.
It was an absolutely great game for the Atari 8-bits and early Commodore computers, though, which I guess where the PCs of their day? - Nintendesert, on 02/10/2009, -0/+5There are some omissions but I played most all of those games and I still love them to this day. I know that games today are overall better, but something about the time and the freshness of what was created just keeps them ranked above the newer stuff.
- EntropyGun, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4No Starflight?
For shame. - dragonrebornn, on 02/10/2009, -1/+5It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
- Corrosionx, on 02/10/2009, -1/+5Zak McKraken was Maniac Mansion's little brother, but it was so cool, with aliens, pyramids, ancient artifacts, etc. It took me months to figure it out (also didn't know a lot of english at the time)
- MothBoy, on 02/10/2009, -2/+6A top 20 list from the 80's without Leisure Suit Larry?
Buried. - hillbillyboy07, on 02/10/2009, -1/+5This and Choplifter were the first games I ever played. Apple IIe
- anaclagon, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4Pool of Radiance is still a great RPG.
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4Missing a slew of Microprose and Spectrum Holobyte games including the Gunship and F-16 Fighting Falcon series.
- trunks13, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4Dugg for putting a list of 20 all on one page.
- mbradbury, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4I remember playing Impossible Mission for hours on end.
- Aviar, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4Wow, one of the few lists I think I can actually agree with. Some of those games will remain favorites forever. M.U.L.E. was just outstanding.
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -1/+4Non frickin sequitur title *****!!!
- MothBoy, on 02/10/2009, -1/+4What, you don't believe the greatest computer games of all time were from the 80's?
Yeah, you are probably right. I played Adventure in the 70's, and it was pretty bad ass. - Brododium, on 02/10/2009, -2/+5I think it's in installments; this particular one is of games from the '80s.
- suprememilo, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3Does anyone remember a game called CEO? it was like Sim city.
- BugMeNot2, on 02/10/2009, -1/+4The submitter changed the title for some reason.
The title of the article is "The Greatest PC Games of All Time: The '80s." - Scott2, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3Long live Oregon Trail.
- jasongbc, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3I still hook up my C64 now and then to play Lode Runner
- evanman69, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3dugg for ZORK!
- WhoDoneIt, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3No Beach Head?!? :(
- Halsfield, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3i miss the adventure games (like myst, but i really liked the animated/drawn ones better). the ones where you had to solve puzzles and look for clues/etc. now an "adventure" game is lara croft blazing away with her pistols on some hapless cave wolves.
- neocreo, on 02/10/2009, -2/+5No F29? Best flight sim ever. Tie-Fighter? No? Fail on the list.
- SanTe, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3"You have died of dysentery."
