(Spoiler: Turn back here) When Gordon killed the Nihilanth and was trapped into the stasis for twenty years by G-Man. The Vorts were thus free from the neck braces of the Nihilanth, and they owed their freedom to "The Free Man". And in that, they figured Gordon would be a little more happy with them around if they helped out ALL humans.
