Perfect example: EPIC MEGAGAMES UNREAL TOURNAMENT 3.
Epic has absolutely destroyed the game, still buggy, HORRID GameSpy Server Browser, emo Character design (WTF?) and so many n00b console-like changes that they have lost not only most of the FPS crowd, but even their own UT99/UT2004 players and all competitive players!! Average number of players WORLDWIDE playing UT3 at any given moment? 250. Oh how the mighty have screwed their own product. - sagien, on 05/31/2008, -0/+58Starcraft was the primary reason why I built a home LAN several years ago. I spent many all nighters with a few of my friends from 2001-2003 playing that game and screaming at each other in the same cramped bedroom, running hot with four or five computers in it.
The great thing about that game is that it'll run on a 100MHz Pentium running Win95 and looking in the newspaper for used PCs to have Starcraft installed on became sort of a hobby of mine for awhile.
I have better computers on my LAN now and they're distributed all throughout the house, but Starcraft is still installed on each and every one of them. We don't want to waste time installing and updating the game and we're always ready to go when the nostalgia hits us.

These days, there's even some commentated broadcasts of current pro/semipro games you can watch - this is one great example: http://www.mediaesports.com/tv/ascension/
It's neat to see how the pros play the game and the commentators help you break down what's going on.
Oh, and in case you don't follow the terminology, "4pool" means getting a Zerg Spawning Pool (allows you to build zerglings) after you've got only 4 mining drones. They came to my school a little while ago and said that they'll work us (programmers) into exhaustion, but they won't pay us much because it's just an honor to work for them. One of the teachers there wanted to throw them the ***** out and lots of the students pledged to work for other companies. Not bashing their game making skills, but they're not a good company to work for. The guys in charge of the company get rich, but the people actually working on the games get screwed.

- RockeN5, on 05/31/2008, -0/+7While I am not disputing that Blizzard IS a great gaming company, I have to throw in that Valve is great and ArenaNet (who made Guild Wars) is great.
An interesting note is that some of the staff who produced Guild Wars are guys from Blizzard :).
