- AnteChronos, on 10/11/2007, -3/+41Misspelling the game's name twice (once in the title, and once in the description)? Bad form, submitter.
- Urusai, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30This is an historic occasion. Copyright law has been enforced in Russia.
- Kobskid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+27KGB brings down the hammer....and sickle
- Elohir, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15Horrible site and an even worse article.
- fomalhaut, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13In America, you break Copyright.
In Soviet Russia, Copyright breaks you! - Teemu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11...server emulates you!
- Yurimanna, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7At least it's not ebaumsworld...
...or ***** double viking... - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Yep, should be Ragnarok. Just in case somebody didn't know...
- Endeavorer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+63 Years in a Russian jail = death
You get TB or some other crap and die pretty fast
The head of Yukos was sent to jail which is located right above a radioactive mine - shafeeq, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5They go by FSB now.....
- Ollin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7There is so many private servers every where of that game its funny that people even still pay 2 play that game anymore.
- blizzok, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Russia: Serious Business.
- ghaib, on 10/11/2007, -15/+19Another Destructoid post getting dugg to the frontpage... the sad side of digg.
- radu79, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Nevertheless, this is not only blog spam, but it is BAD blog spam. I couldn't understand anything about wtf happened before I read the original article.
- NGliam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3How did someone get access to the source code of the RO servers? Uhm.. seems like a failing on their behalf heh :P
- stklaw, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4In games, Soviet Russia breaks your legs.
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Let's all report it as spam. I mean, occasionally they have something good but most of the time it's illiterate ramblings. They should also stop going into Word and using the thesaurus, why ? It doesn't make you look smart.
- nocre, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You don't pay for it because, frankly, the paid servers are absolutely horrible. They have nonexistent administration and are absolutely riddled with bots.
- Rooker156, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Aegis is not emulation software. it is the real deal.
- nocre, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is amusing because Russian authorities sent him to jail. Gravity CO has launched numerous lawsuits against hosts of private servers, and they have -never- been successful, even in their home country.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2If he had done this in the USA, he probably wouldn't have gone to jail, but the suit or settlement would bankrupt him for a lot longer than 3 years, thats for sure.
- worthone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1There has been at least one source code leak before - of others I don't know - but that was ages ago and the game has evolved much from since. Everything else is pretty much trying to create a code that emulates the original one.
- vermin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1There was also a Lineage 2 server code leak, which forms the basis for all hacked L2 servers out there.
I guess the leaks are fairly common. Disgruntled employees perhaps? - trollick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1In Soviet Russia, server emulates you!
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Stupid pointless correction: the KGB has been renamed; nowadays it's called FSB. And yeah, if instructed to do so they'll happily break legs or sprinkle polonium.
Stupid pointless remark: "How did RO get involved with the mafia?" That's easy - you either get involved with the mafia and pay protection money to the appropriate oligarch, or you don't do business in Russia. The mafia runs Russia, Putin is just the biggest mafia boss, the godfather. - Asianwaste, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Almost every MMO has illegal private servers. World of Warcraft even has some.
- Zippo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2People still play RO?
- lepsik, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2The article is very inaccurate and has many mistakes. The guy (Kiselev, not Kaseliov) gets conditional jail time, so he will not go to any prison.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Yeah, but the head of Yukos was another mafia boss who'd challenged Putin as Godfather of the Russian mafia. That's why Putin stole his company and killed most of his liutenants. The only reason Putin didn't murder him outright was because Putin still couldn't take on all the other oligarchs/mafia bosses.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1That's what happens when you break the law, you get punished. When you do it in Russia you get punished harshly.
- Leviathan88, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Hooray, "In Soviet Russia..." jokes!
- swazooe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1PSERVERS FTW
- Gareth1992, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0i wonder how many years someone would get for doing this with WoW
- Mirokoth, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I agree. After it went out of beta that is where I went :P (this being like 2 or 3 years ago).
- CarpeFishem, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Aww, man, America is such a fascist state!
- necbone, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1DEITY!!!!!!!!!!
- rouslan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Russian gulag: http://www.angelfire.com/extreme4/kiddofspeed/camps/camps.html
They probably don't exist anymore, so don't call modern Russian prisons "gulags", although they are in much worse conditions than prisons in other nations. - Ramaloke, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Actually, this game went out of beta around 2001, and the original way to run a private server was off of reverse engineered code that they had pulled off of a running server they hacked. Eventually people made some server emulation software such as Aegis and a few others.
- StillGaming, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1"SURPRISE cockfags!"
