- Wartz, on 07/24/2008, -7/+84"perk up the waning PC gaming market."
Since when has the PC gaming market been waning? - yournamehere, on 07/24/2008, -2/+37so it's Microsoft Live against Valve Steam now
- u8muhrice, on 07/24/2008, -8/+37Thats good customer service by Microsoft.
- apothekari, on 07/24/2008, -5/+33great now do away with silver and make gold free!
- Kanten, on 07/25/2008, -0/+27MMO's, RTS, and anything by Blizzard or Valve pretty much debunks the "PC gaming is dying" theory.
- airencracken, on 07/25/2008, -5/+27If only they made xbox live gold free too. :/
- zaii7, on 07/25/2008, -3/+20steam has my vote
they have been consistent and have always put their best foot forward - bigbenorr, on 07/25/2008, -2/+18yeah I was thinking the same thing,
you've got WoW with who knows how many players, plus all the true FPS fans are PC gamers, and tons of other MMO's and PC's have a complete monopoly of the RTS market.
I mean, please, has there ever been a decent RTS game released for console? (starcraft 64 anyone?) - worldnick, on 07/25/2008, -6/+22LOL since when was the PC market dying? Sure it's not growing as fast as consoles, but that is because those are new lazy ex high school foot ballers that are too fat to play normal football now. Intelligent people will always enjoy the power of the PC.
- Fingertips, on 07/25/2008, -0/+14must not have been, jesus christ, steam used to be a big steaming pile of *****
- rednaxela825, on 07/24/2008, -0/+12or Windows Gaming Center
- cheezintern, on 07/25/2008, -0/+11Microsoft is a big company. They are capable of doing more than one thing at a time.
- sturmgiest, on 07/25/2008, -0/+11yeah he wasnt there. steam was the buggiest piece of ***** ever when it launched, and how it listed servers was ridiculously unfair(by ip).
- manitoba98xp, on 07/25/2008, -0/+11Yes. See for yourself: http://www.steampowered.com/
(If you meant: does Valve _make_ any non-FPS games themselves, I don't believe so.) - KMehthas, on 07/25/2008, -0/+11I think they mean "perk up the waning [Games by Microsoft] PC gaming market." Good to them for doing this.
- Kanten, on 07/25/2008, -1/+11Yes, and to play 360/PS3 in a COMPARABLE resolution to a "decent gaming rig" you also need to drop $700+ on an HDTV.
- rossiohead, on 07/25/2008, -0/+10I don't have a 360, so I'm speaking out of ignorance here, but...
If the best selling point for the Premium Service is that it is less annoying than the Free Service, then I think that just means the Service overall needs some serious adjustments. - Riggs, on 07/25/2008, -0/+9Keep in mind that computers are inherently more valuable because they can do MUCH more than just gaming.
- Raian, on 07/25/2008, -4/+12PC gaming is dying because people are only playing 2 or 3 different titles for months or years on end... and I don't think any of those titles belong to Microsoft.
- lordtyros, on 07/25/2008, -0/+8Yeah, I'm surprised at MS's stepping up their game. Hopefully this motivates Valve to make Steam even better (faster TF2 updates, perhaps?). When companies compete, we all win.
- inactive, on 07/25/2008, -2/+10Nice way to piss off several million Xbox Live subscribers
- neko, on 07/25/2008, -0/+8Of course they are. How else are they going to fool people into thinking a graphics hardware abstraction library is what makes shiny games so shiny?
- Harbinger67, on 07/25/2008, -1/+9Waning? Spore, Crysis Warhead, Far Cry 2, Tiberum, Red Alert 3, Fallout 3, Project Origin. All before the end of 2008.
Yeah, the PC gaming market is *****.
(I realize that several of those are multiplatform, but each of them has deep PC roots and will undoubtably be hits on PC as well as consoles) - knodi, on 07/25/2008, -2/+9Now if only they can do the same thing to LIVE on Xbox360.
- inactive, on 07/25/2008, -3/+10why so we can get more loud ass kids on live?
- FireSlash, on 07/25/2008, -1/+8icle!
- Skab, on 07/25/2008, -5/+11buried inaccurate "perk up the waning PC gaming market." better tell WoW, TF2, CS, MMO communites the news...
- exec0extreme, on 07/25/2008, -3/+8DX10 is barely utilized and they're developing it's successor already?
- sirbeta, on 07/25/2008, -1/+6Yes?
- Titan615, on 07/25/2008, -2/+7I just built a 500$ gaming rig for a friend, it can play all major games on high to the highest settings. If you think you can only get a high end computer from Vodoo, Falcon Northwest and all those other boutique manufacturers you are dead wrong. My friend is currently playing Age of Conan at the highest settings, COD4, and Quake Wars.
Seriously I think 500$ is far cheaper than the Xbox360 and a decent TV, even with the 19" LCD I sold him the PC is cheaper.
Here were the system specs:
AMD X2 5400+ Processor
2x 1GB DDR2 800 Wintec AmpX modules
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD3870 512mb
Gigabyte Motherboard with the AMD 770 chipset
WD Caviar 160Gb Drive
Coolermaster Centurion case
Coolermaster eXtreme 650w power supply.
Liteon iHas2014 DVD burner.
DCLLCD 19" LCD monitor. - Darrelc, on 07/24/2008, -2/+7Kinda a bit off topic and maybe stupid but why doesn't microsoft create a frontend for windows, the same type of thing as windows media center but specifically for gaming?, Where all your games would be accesible, easily updateable etc and would fit in nicely with "XBLA for PC's" from the article.
Edit, they could call it Xbox Media Center =] - tcasey22, on 07/25/2008, -0/+5Bravo sir.
- logicalnoise, on 07/24/2008, -7/+12leading the market?
- centric2, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4I don't see why you'd need to upgrade your entire computer every few months unless you want to throw money away. At the very least, with a PC, the option to upgrade is always there. With consoles you get the (relatively) same graphics until the next 500 dollar console comes around a few years later.
- inactive, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4Even though GFWL is free, I still have no intentions of using it. Steam is the XBL of PCs and Microsoft isn't going to usurp that from them. It was ludicrous of Microsoft to think that PC gamers would pay for what we've already had for years and saying that they made it free because of bad PC game sales is just an excuse because of how terrible it was doing.
- bjornski, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4I meant Valve themselves, but thanks.
I've got a Steam account. Just haven't had the itch to play the games I have there. (X3 alone was worth it). - bakajojo, on 07/25/2008, -3/+7Im still sticking with valve.
- Voxxis, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4To be fair, you'll probably have to go buy a new console every time yours breaks or a new generation comes out, but then again I suppose it's a good deal cheaper than a new PC.
- freezerburn666, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4gears of war i believe uses it, and universe at war earth assault..
- johnroth, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4You mean like Steam?
- RichPowers, on 07/25/2008, -2/+5Ars is normally one of my favorite tech sites, but its insistence that PC gaming is "dying" or "waning" drives me nuts. Lesser bloggers finally gave up on that boneheaded meme a month or two ago, yet a respectable site likes Ars carries on. The worst part is that it's not *specific* articles about "OMG PC GAMES TEH DEAD"; Ars goes out of its way to mention that the latest PC gaming news is indicative of the platform's failure or death or whatever.
- Alucard010, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4If you're running vista already I would suggest buying Shadowrun now that you can play for free, it's severely unappreciated.
- carlosos, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3Don't forget the $50 a year that the Xbox360 users have to pay to play online while your friend can use that saving to buy upgrades when the newest Xbox comes out. That should be enough by that time to buy a new CPU and GPU which is at end cheaper while being able to do more and paying less for games.
- rearlgrant, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3Funny, you and zaii7 are both right.
- clickfire, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3The PC Gaming market is not waning in my house.
- rossiohead, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4Also to be fair, most new PCs aren't outdated by a mile within a few months (although I guess it depends on your definition of "a few"). I think a year is a more reasonable passage of time, after which a PC owner will begin to notice more and more games that won't run on "High" settings.
But most of this is just a function of the graphics card anyway. A smart PC purchase can last 3-5 years with a well-timed video card upgrade somewhere in the middle. That's more expensive than buying a new console, but then you factor in the things a computer does that a console doesn't... It's all apples and oranges, really. - patm1987, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3Assuming you already have some sort of video output (monitor), and user input device (keyboard/mouse) like most people on digg, you can buy

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTool ...
and
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTool ...
I have a slightly worse machine and run most new games in the medium-high settings usually getting a solid 40 fps or above.
And you can get a keyboard and mouse free (I did, school was throwing them out... I managed to get one of those old spring loaded keyboards), and monitors are fairly cheap if you don't mind CRT's (for a gaming rig usually better if you don't have the cash to spend). - jaythewise, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2I would like to see Stardock expand to offer more great single player games
- bigbenorr, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2actually apple did refund $100 to everyone who bought an iphone in the first two months, since the price dropped $200 after that. but other than that you are right, they are very proud of their products I guess
