Making Gaming Better
bit-tech.net — Gamers like to complain. I like to complain too. When you care about something, of course you are the first person to point out its problems and what needs fixing. Most of the time, we assume that fixing those things is somebody else's job, but actually there's a lot that we can all do to make gaming better for everyone...

- nothugo, on 04/24/2008, -5/+66I fully agree, so many of the problems with gaming today aren't the fault of the developers but the people playing the games. If everyone stopped acting like such jerks we'd all be much happier.

- cdawzrd, on 04/24/2008, -2/+56Buying directly from the developer is an awesome suggestion. Why do you think Valve's been doing so well (and releasing so many awesome games) ever since they pulled out of a publishing deal and launched their own thing (Steam) to publish their games? I've bought every Valve game I've played, because I know my money is going to people who will use it the right way.

- ZenMojo, on 04/25/2008, -0/+7I recently bought Okami direct from dev because I couldn't find any stores selling it. Now I feel better knowing I cut out the ignorant middleman.
- dadioflex, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2Which is fine for Valve games but 90% of the games on Steam don't come from Valve and Valve are the de facto Publishers and Distributors in these cases making them part of the problem not the solution.
- wizpig64, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Valve doesn't pay other developers to make games for Steam, and they don't want anything to do with influencing how developers make their games. All Steam does is let developers get their products easily to an already widespread audience, for a small cut of the sale price. I view Steam as more of a distribution platform than as a publishing company. The tools Valve provide for free (through SteamWorks) allow indie developers to spend more time on their games in stead of worrying about getting their products to their audience.
Yes, other major publishers (Activision, Rockstar, Ubisoft) are riding the Steam band wagon, and this doesn't really add the incentive that developers are getting more your money. But where was the first place to get Bioshock for $30? What other game store has great deals on big name games like these on a weekly basis?
If anything, Valve should be called an anti-publisher. Being a development studio itself, it knows the needs of other developers in the industry, and Steam has done nothing but good for PC gamers.

- goldfenix, on 04/24/2008, -2/+38Some of this stuff seems like it's the equivalent of trying to pour chlorine into an ocean of piss. "Confront bad behaviour online"? That would be called feeding the trolls where I come from. And telling me that I ought to confront people for pirating games? Really? Should I also start yelling at my friends for pirating Metallica? Hell, I don't give two damns if you pirated Bioshock or not. About the only thing I might bitch you out for is pirating indie games, which leads us to...
the few good points that I think are worth talking about. First, indie games. He mentions Tower of Goo right in the article, and that's a great example of a game coming out that is going to be fantastic. If diggers were to get their friends in on that sort of thing, even that little push would help out the indie game development community. So I fully encourage that. Second, embracing newcomers. If you've played TF2, you know how it can be when an obviously new guy shows up on a server and is running around trying to hit people with the flamethrower from 70 yards away. What I do in those situations is just say to the guy, "Hey, if you're just learning this game, I'd play as the Soldier. Then just try to aim at the enemy's feet." It's a small bit of advice, and as long as they're not a jerk they'll usually follow the advice. There, you just helped a new guy out. It's much more productive than yelling at him, "Goddamn noob just tried to destroy our own sentry guns with a bat!"- cdawzrd, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2Feeding the trolls is allowing them to bait you, not confronting them about your bad behavior.
- Sambora, on 04/25/2008, -3/+2You sir are 100% correct. Dugg!

- Jenadae, on 04/24/2008, -1/+14"Jolly good chainsaw you have there chap! I hope to meet it with my neck once again in the near future!"
- sbader, on 04/24/2008, -11/+7New players should be embraced and given advice on how to play the game.
For example in WoW if you are playing in a battle ground on the horde side and you do something stupid the horde will let you know. If you do the same thing on the alliance side chances are people won't say a damn thing about it, which just perpetuates the idea that alliance sucks at pvp and does nothing to address the why of it.- Cyborg326, on 04/25/2008, -0/+8and while there are definitely jerks in WoW, more often then not the random player you ask for help/advice will answer your question if they know and aren't AFK. As much as people rip on WoW, it has a better online community than I've seen in a lot of games.
- kawaiirobo, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3I played both Horde and Alliance in the past, (recovering WoW addict) and I must say, Horde players in general are far friendlier than Alliance players, they were also more likely to give you real constructive criticism that would help, I don't know why, that's just my experience.
- Epik, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2Alliance initially draws the more sensitive crowd. The ones who need their in-game characters to look familiar and "attractive". The Horde draws the more experienced, "it's just a game" PVP types. Of course this is a huge generalization but horde does do better on most servers as far as pvp goes.
- DarkReign16, on 04/25/2008, -12/+5This article sucks my ass.

- spilk, on 04/25/2008, -1/+28as someone who just started playing COD4 on xbox live, this speaks to me. Most people know that buying direct from the developer earns the dev a bigger share than buying from a store, but do you have any idea how much difference it can be? In some cases it's a tenfold difference!"
I would LOVE to buy direct - I DO have something against publishers (greedy ones like EA and Microsoft), but even so... How the hell do I do this? Walk into their headquarters and ask for a disk? I don't think many developers sell their games directly, but if they do, point me in the right direction.- valkyries, on 04/25/2008, -1/+5its called Steam.

- preban, on 04/25/2008, -20/+2Sorry, video games are not meant to be taken seriously, if the author takes his "gaming" like he's in church, then he needs to get out more. The whole point of vg's are that they are an escape from reality, a nice freedom from the harridans and nannies that exist in real life.
Oh one other thing, when I call guys like the author a "fag", it's not because I'm homophobic. It's because I'm an *****. If that hurts your twitter, too ***** bad.- Zep77, on 04/25/2008, -0/+12You are quite the ignorant one, aren't you?

- UtilityPole, on 04/25/2008, -0/+0Yeah, exactly. Videogames aren't meant to be taken seriously- that's exactly what the author was arguing. - DeusNova, on 04/25/2008, -1/+5Gaming is becoming too much like Hollywood in my opinion.
- Ramzy, on 04/25/2008, -0/+16I really ***** hate the "pro" players who feel that they're above being nice, or offering help.
People need to understand that everyone starting playing games at some point, and when they did, they weren't instant killing machines that knew every exploit and tactic that the game had to offer.
"Pro" gamers need to pull their heads out of their asses and realise that the world doesn't revolve around them, nor does it add to their rep when they're complete dicks to other players.
In TF2, the F10 key is set, by default, as the instant quit key. Tap F10 once, and your game will exit instantly. I can't count the amount of times where someone who just joined the game says something like "Hey guys, how do you do a critical hit?", moments later, 10 people reply with "Press F10 to activate it"
It doesn't help anyone, it makes you look like a dick, and the cycle perpetuates when the "noob" that got tricked, then vents his anger on someone else by telling them to press F10.
This whole pro / noob thing needs to stop.- cerealjynx, on 04/25/2008, -1/+10Just press F10 and it will. :D
- oMeSSiaHo, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2I dont think that is the worst possible thing someone can do. I fell for it (it turns out there is no second taunt menu) even though I've been playing online games for 10 plus years. I just laughed and learned my lesson. Just look at it as a right of passage!
- caLt, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1I taunt n00bs by pressing G.

Are you ***** kidding me? sure Manhunt is pretty brutal, but seriously have these people ever played GTA or Bully? They are pretty light hearted and comical in there violence, hardly indefensible. This article seems like it was written by some 40 year old mother who had her son yelled at on xbox live - baysidecomedy, on 04/25/2008, -0/+11this is actually a really good article. i had to suffere a week of hearing racist 9 year olds berade me on call of duty 4 until i got up to a high enough rank to shut them up.
- noangelcame, on 04/25/2008, -0/+7"When you care about something, of course you are the first person to point out its problems and what needs fixing."
If only people felt this way about topics other than video games. This kind of opinion labels you anti-American in politics for instance. - jewbagel, on 04/25/2008, -8/+1Well I think I lost a bit of life after reading this ideological, "let's all hold hands" piece of trash.
- wafflesomd, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Don't know why your getting dugg down.
- seanshady, on 04/25/2008, -9/+0I'm really surprised at how much people agree with this article.
Making fun of noobs and talking ***** is ritualistic in gaming and people shouldn't take it seriously and if someone gets too butt hurt over the fact that they are getting made fun of, they probably aren't mature enough to be playing the game since most hardcore ***** talking is done on games like COD4.
This guy does not seem like a true gamer to me.
(and tattling on people who talk *****?! Are you ***** kidding me!? Grow up man this isn't the third grade)- JustinHopewell, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5There's a difference between some friendly trash-talking and just being an ass in general. If you know someone, trash-talking is fun and keeps the game lively. If you just met the person, it comes off as an insult, and more often than not, it was meant as one, rather than a playful tease.
- Needles13, on 04/25/2008, -4/+2Maybe if downloading a game from, for example, Steam didn't take 2 ***** days I would be more inclined to buy direct.
- ZaZ2137, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3Try not downloading with a dialup modem, dsl/cable average takes 2 hours to download large games like assassins creed orangebox etc over steam stop spreading FUD.
- Splee84, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2I think talking ***** about how bad the other team sucks (even though they're kicking your ass) is fun and makes the game more fun but when someone is insulting someone else based on their religion or race i think that's going to far. And as for pirating, yea i have to agree with the guy, i recently just started buying games, although i downloaded and played games for a few good years now, i find games less boring if i buy it since i can only get so little at a time. with downloading i m playing a new game every week or so. I bought COD4 for my PS3 and that's the only game i have and i m not even bored of it...or maybe it's because the game is so fun.
- senatorpjt, on 04/25/2008, -1/+4"Few other hobbies or sports lead to as much swearing, abuse and general yobbish behaviour as online gaming." Yeah, except all of them. Try a google image search for "soccer riot".
- unionaire, on 04/25/2008, -2/+3I stop reading at suggestion#1, it's too idealistic and is completely pointless...
Stop being a jerk online? I'd love that idea but please propose a solution!
Fact is, since your identity is not revealed, people couldn't care less what you they do. Gaming is a serious business to many players, you are competitive and you play to win -- this is always the case with hardcore gamers. Since everyone plays anonymously, you are only respected by your skills, no one cares who you are until you show them what you are capable of.
So to make gaming better, is not about correcting people's behaviors but rather develop games according to people's behaviors. Divide gamers by groups and give them games they want/like. In other words, variety and creativity win. Nentindo is doing a good job and hope they can keep up with that. Conversely, tons of first person shooters should go to toilet. Not that i'm against 1st person shooter, I actually used to play Halo2 a lot but there are just way too many similar games of first person shooter that lacks of creativity. I don't know how hard it is to make one but I assume it is probably one of the easiest among other games.
Build gaming communities and make it more popular, reveal people's identities within the community so people will start be nice to each other because now they KNOW each other.
When you say "Making", we would expect to hear "How to make it better" and not "Why it isn't good enough", buried as being inaccurate and idealistic and pointless. - senatorpjt, on 04/25/2008, -4/+1Don't three and four kind of contradict each other? Three says "Don't pirate the games" and four says "Games are released without demos so you buy them before realizing they're *****." It would seem that piracy is then justified if the developer doesn't release a playable demo, at least.
- ShugNinx21, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5Piracy is not an alternate form of a demo being released. I wish people would stop trying to rationale obtaining games illegally. I don't care if you do it but quit pretending that you have some kind of ***** right to take ***** without paying for it.
- senatorpjt, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1if it's the only justification, they might as well release a demo. I won't buy games that don't have a demo. I don't pirate them either (because i'm too lazy).
- ShugNinx21, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5Piracy is not an alternate form of a demo being released. I wish people would stop trying to rationale obtaining games illegally. I don't care if you do it but quit pretending that you have some kind of ***** right to take ***** without paying for it.
- PrincessCake, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5I logged in to Digg for the 1st time in many months just to digg this. I don't even agree with everything said, but there is much that needs to be heard.
- DudeInAustin, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3Cheaters killed the original Counter-Strike for me. Immature jerks trashed what was left of the enjoyment of that particular game on many public servers.
My unscientific polling leads me to believe that many of the worst cheaters and jerks may tend to also be the people who pirated their games.
If I pay $40 of my own loot for something, I just seem less likely to be the sort of person who would risk getting banned by acting like a luzer. That key-code is worth something to me!
Cheater who buy their games may also be higher on the jerk-o-meter, as they already showed they have no respect for other players by resorting to hax. If they don't respect other players enough to protect the integrity of the contest, why not act like a total jerk as well?
So, effective anti-piracy and anti-cheat detection may cut down greatly on the jerk population.
The subject of dealing with anti-social players within the elements of game design was explored in much more detail on Gamasutra recently.- Acqua206, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1That may be for PC gaming but it falls apart for Xbox and PS3 online gaming. I doubt that there are too many pirated versions of COD4 being played on the PS3 but the jerks sure are plentiful!
- colombian201, on 04/29/2008, -0/+0@Acqua206
I can assure you there are alot of pirated version out there of everything. It is just way too easy to not do it and sell it at a large scale. If you dont trust me go to countries lik Mexico or Paraguay
- goldisalie, on 04/25/2008, -1/+6While assholes online is a pain in the ass, I personally don't let it bother me much because of one simple truth: 'pro' players only get where they are by having absolutely no life, life skills, or social skills, and online gamers who deride you for being a n00b are so obviously making up for deficiencies in their real lives that its kind of sad. I call them 'life n00bs', they are n00bs at life. Since I'm usually drunk or other when playing my scores tend to range from complete n00b to reasonably decent... I'd be worried if I ever started getting top scores.
To me the real problem in online gaming is the ridiculous desire to win at all costs that results in team stacking and often hacking and cheating. I cannot for the life of me understand how a game is fun when its as easy as pissing, or easier? How does that stroke your ego? "yeah I shot a bunch of fish in a barrel today, I totally pwn!" I get bored and feel guilty and switch sides usually when I'm on a team that is winning by streets, even though I rarely contribute much. The most fun is had in balanced games, for winners and losers, I don't understand why so few people think this way?- kawaiirobo, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2I totally agree, I too like balanced games, AND usually play drunk! I have found that there is a magic gaming drunk about 4 to 5 drinks in, where you get some strange boost in skill, though it also has a reverse uncanny valley effect, where after the magic point you turn to total bullocks.
- FearFactory, on 04/25/2008, -3/+1Nine: Don't play World of Warcraft
- colombian201, on 04/29/2008, -0/+0hahaha best game ever. Without the jerks and racists assholes in trade channel WoW would be boring. If you are bored at a capital city and are waiting for arean que, then you just turn to the trade channel and start talking about worthless crap or bashing at ppl. hahah some people are hated in servers like lets say Misao in the durotan server, bring her name up and you have plenty of people just laughing at her instantly.
- MrESaulved, on 04/25/2008, -2/+1One of the joys of gaming is skillfully deflating egos with talent and elan, I shall not stop.
Make me, noob. - scarz99, on 04/25/2008, -4/+1Agreed, except for the pirating part. Developers dont need to see the money coming in to get geared up for making a new game.
- kawaiirobo, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2how can a developer MAKE a new game if they have no budget from sales?
- UtilityPole, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Yeah, that small office, sophisticated hardware set-up, and staffing are all paid for by the gods of videogaming.
Right?
- TheGecKOo, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1I Agree also with this, One thing I never thought of was buying directly from the publisher. I think the reason I dont is you end up getting the game you REALLY want a day or two later then everyone else and that just plain sucks
