- nothugo, on 04/24/2008, -5/+66I fully agree, so many of the problems with gaming today aren't the fault of the developers but the people playing the games. If everyone stopped acting like such jerks we'd all be much happier.
- cdawzrd, on 04/24/2008, -2/+56Buying directly from the developer is an awesome suggestion. Why do you think Valve's been doing so well (and releasing so many awesome games) ever since they pulled out of a publishing deal and launched their own thing (Steam) to publish their games? I've bought every Valve game I've played, because I know my money is going to people who will use it the right way.
- goldfenix, on 04/24/2008, -2/+38Some of this stuff seems like it's the equivalent of trying to pour chlorine into an ocean of piss. "Confront bad behaviour online"? That would be called feeding the trolls where I come from. And telling me that I ought to confront people for pirating games? Really? Should I also start yelling at my friends for pirating Metallica? Hell, I don't give two damns if you pirated Bioshock or not. About the only thing I might bitch you out for is pirating indie games, which leads us to...
the few good points that I think are worth talking about. First, indie games. He mentions Tower of Goo right in the article, and that's a great example of a game coming out that is going to be fantastic. If diggers were to get their friends in on that sort of thing, even that little push would help out the indie game development community. So I fully encourage that. Second, embracing newcomers. If you've played TF2, you know how it can be when an obviously new guy shows up on a server and is running around trying to hit people with the flamethrower from 70 yards away. What I do in those situations is just say to the guy, "Hey, if you're just learning this game, I'd play as the Soldier. Then just try to aim at the enemy's feet." It's a small bit of advice, and as long as they're not a jerk they'll usually follow the advice. There, you just helped a new guy out. It's much more productive than yelling at him, "Goddamn noob just tried to destroy our own sentry guns with a bat!" - RoyaleCheese, on 04/24/2008, -7/+40Dugg for "Make Love, Not Warcraft" picture.
- Surefly, on 04/25/2008, -4/+37"One: Don't act like a jerk online."
I don't think online jerks will read this and go, 'Ya know, I'm pretty mean to people I don't know on the internet. I'm gonna change and make a positive difference in my online communities so when people see my screen name appear as I enter the game they will applaud and cheer'. - spilk, on 04/25/2008, -1/+28as someone who just started playing COD4 on xbox live, this speaks to me. I get called noob constantly, and well, I do suck pretty bad, and I'm not even playing in team games where my noobism really affects anyone. There are some nice people, but they are far and few between.
- masterm1nd, on 04/24/2008, -0/+25Because valve doesn't release games that don't meet certain quality standards.
- valkyries, on 04/25/2008, -0/+24sometimes taking 6 years to make a game works out really well
- valkyries, on 04/25/2008, -0/+20well thats just gona take forever duh...
- goldfenix, on 04/24/2008, -2/+19how cum yur spellin suxs?
- inactive, on 04/25/2008, -1/+18except in cases like Duke Nukem Forever.
- Ramzy, on 04/25/2008, -0/+16I really ***** hate the "pro" players who feel that they're above being nice, or offering help.
People need to understand that everyone starting playing games at some point, and when they did, they weren't instant killing machines that knew every exploit and tactic that the game had to offer.
"Pro" gamers need to pull their heads out of their asses and realise that the world doesn't revolve around them, nor does it add to their rep when they're complete dicks to other players.
In TF2, the F10 key is set, by default, as the instant quit key. Tap F10 once, and your game will exit instantly. I can't count the amount of times where someone who just joined the game says something like "Hey guys, how do you do a critical hit?", moments later, 10 people reply with "Press F10 to activate it"
It doesn't help anyone, it makes you look like a dick, and the cycle perpetuates when the "noob" that got tricked, then vents his anger on someone else by telling them to press F10.
This whole pro / noob thing needs to stop. - Downtime, on 04/25/2008, -0/+14cheers to buying direct from the dev
- inactive, on 04/24/2008, -3/+16There is a very fine line between being a jerk and good trash talking online. Spamming isn't funny to anyone and you are just pissing people off. No one likes you...so go deal with that.
- Jenadae, on 04/24/2008, -1/+14"Jolly good chainsaw you have there chap! I hope to meet it with my neck once again in the near future!"
- SSCrow, on 04/24/2008, -2/+15Thats the whole point.
And why there is a bad stigma associated with Gamers. - Sambora, on 04/25/2008, -1/+14Welcome to Xbox Live.
- Zep77, on 04/25/2008, -0/+12You are quite the ignorant one, aren't you?
- MasterGrief, on 04/25/2008, -1/+13Welcome to the internet.
- baysidecomedy, on 04/25/2008, -0/+11this is actually a really good article. i had to suffere a week of hearing racist 9 year olds berade me on call of duty 4 until i got up to a high enough rank to shut them up.
- cerealjynx, on 04/25/2008, -1/+10Just press F10 and it will. :D
- Cyborg326, on 04/25/2008, -0/+8and while there are definitely jerks in WoW, more often then not the random player you ask for help/advice will answer your question if they know and aren't AFK. As much as people rip on WoW, it has a better online community than I've seen in a lot of games.
- PurpleSfinx, on 04/25/2008, -0/+8"Eight: Try to buy direct
Most people know that buying direct from the developer earns the dev a bigger share than buying from a store, but do you have any idea how much difference it can be? In some cases it's a tenfold difference!"
I would LOVE to buy direct - I DO have something against publishers (greedy ones like EA and Microsoft), but even so... How the hell do I do this? Walk into their headquarters and ask for a disk? I don't think many developers sell their games directly, but if they do, point me in the right direction. - da_bradler, on 04/25/2008, -3/+10"Six: Don't defend the indefensible
We hate it when gaming gets attacked in the media, but do we ever stop to see if they have a point? Manhunt, GTA, Bully"
Are you ***** kidding me? sure Manhunt is pretty brutal, but seriously have these people ever played GTA or Bully? They are pretty light hearted and comical in there violence, hardly indefensible. This article seems like it was written by some 40 year old mother who had her son yelled at on xbox live - noangelcame, on 04/25/2008, -0/+7"When you care about something, of course you are the first person to point out its problems and what needs fixing."
If only people felt this way about topics other than video games. This kind of opinion labels you anti-American in politics for instance. - JoeSpaceTime, on 04/25/2008, -2/+9I pay for my games. You should too. Read the article again.
- ZenMojo, on 04/25/2008, -0/+7I recently bought Okami direct from dev because I couldn't find any stores selling it. Now I feel better knowing I cut out the ignorant middleman.
- kawaiirobo, on 04/25/2008, -0/+6"no embraced me"
maybe it was because you talk like a caveman. - thebza451, on 04/25/2008, -1/+7"that would be called feeding the trolls where I come from" ... wow you live under a bridge in middle earth? you go frodo
- Zep77, on 04/25/2008, -2/+7I really liked this article. Lots of good points.
- goldisalie, on 04/25/2008, -1/+6While ***** online is a pain in the ass, I personally don't let it bother me much because of one simple truth: 'pro' players only get where they are by having absolutely no life, life skills, or social skills, and online gamers who deride you for being a n00b are so obviously making up for deficiencies in their real lives that its kind of sad. I call them 'life n00bs', they are n00bs at life. Since I'm usually drunk or other when playing my scores tend to range from complete n00b to reasonably decent... I'd be worried if I ever started getting top scores.
To me the real problem in online gaming is the ridiculous desire to win at all costs that results in team stacking and often hacking and cheating. I cannot for the life of me understand how a game is fun when its as easy as pissing, or easier? How does that stroke your ego? "yeah I shot a bunch of fish in a barrel today, I totally pwn!" I get bored and feel guilty and switch sides usually when I'm on a team that is winning by streets, even though I rarely contribute much. The most fun is had in balanced games, for winners and losers, I don't understand why so few people think this way? - PrincessCake, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5I logged in to Digg for the 1st time in many months just to digg this. I don't even agree with everything said, but there is much that needs to be heard.
- ShugNinx21, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5Piracy is not an alternate form of a demo being released. I wish people would stop trying to rationale obtaining games illegally. I don't care if you do it but quit pretending that you have some kind of ***** right to take ***** without paying for it.
- JustinHopewell, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5There's a difference between some friendly trash-talking and just being an ass in general. If you know someone, trash-talking is fun and keeps the game lively. If you just met the person, it comes off as an insult, and more often than not, it was meant as one, rather than a playful tease.
- JustinHopewell, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5And yet, you still come off as the *****. Self-admitted, though, right?
- MrWally, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4Welcome to the world...?
- Charlatan22, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4Honestly, xbox live is the epitome of the insult video game culture. But honestly, Halo is the main problem. Even COD4 seems tame compared to the people on Halo.
- screwfanboys1, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4order it form the devs website
- valkyries, on 04/25/2008, -1/+5its called Steam.
- tendonut, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4What the hell does this "quality standards" thing you speak of? My boss John Riccitiello says thats just technical mumbo jumbo and I shouldn't bother myself with it
- DeusNova, on 04/25/2008, -1/+5Gaming is becoming too much like Hollywood in my opinion.
- ZaZ2137, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3Try not downloading with a dialup modem, dsl/cable average takes 2 hours to download large games like assassins creed orangebox etc over steam stop spreading FUD.
- kawaiirobo, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3I think there should be a distinction between n00bs and new players. I am all about helping a new player learn the game and get better, but sometimes you run into the kind of n00bs that despite playing for 2 days talks trash the whole game and blames their loss on 'lag' or crappy teammates. n00bs (like I have described) deserve no respect.
- inactive, on 04/25/2008, -1/+4"Few other hobbies or sports lead to as much swearing, abuse and general yobbish behaviour as online gaming." Yeah, except all of them. Try a google image search for "soccer riot".
- Elissar, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3Says anyone with sense.
- triskele, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3That much is obvious, but on the flip side it's a reminder to the type of gamers that will read this article not to stoop to their level.
- DudeInAustin, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3Cheaters killed the original Counter-Strike for me. Immature jerks trashed what was left of the enjoyment of that particular game on many public servers.
My unscientific polling leads me to believe that many of the worst cheaters and jerks may tend to also be the people who pirated their games.
If I pay $40 of my own loot for something, I just seem less likely to be the sort of person who would risk getting banned by acting like a luzer. That key-code is worth something to me!
Cheater who buy their games may also be higher on the jerk-o-meter, as they already showed they have no respect for other players by resorting to hax. If they don't respect other players enough to protect the integrity of the contest, why not act like a total jerk as well?
So, effective anti-piracy and anti-cheat detection may cut down greatly on the jerk population.
The subject of dealing with anti-social players within the elements of game design was explored in much more detail on Gamasutra recently. - masterm1nd, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3Just a guess but, do you by chance work at EA?
- kawaiirobo, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3I played both Horde and Alliance in the past, (recovering WoW addict) and I must say, Horde players in general are far friendlier than Alliance players, they were also more likely to give you real constructive criticism that would help, I don't know why, that's just my experience.
- JustinHopewell, on 04/25/2008, -1/+4People like you are the only reason I question evolution.
