- roxxorofjoo, on 12/04/2008, -1/+7619 rules that I learned after 10 minutes of play
- chronobyte, on 12/03/2008, -2/+50#20: When you time it right you can ward off a hunter's pounce with melee attack. Master this technique and it will serve you well in many critical situations.
This also works against the smoker's tongue. - inactive, on 12/03/2008, -0/+48I love this game. I really hope they release some new map packs though.
- MakiMaki, on 12/03/2008, -2/+49"#13: Pistol Power
Always pick up a second pistol. This will allow you to fire faster, and you have unlimited pistol ammo.
#7: Not Your Everyday Vomit
Shoot the Boomer zombie who can regurgitate deadly vomit from unbelievable distances. If you don't, you'll get sprayed by his toxic puke, which will both blur your vision and attract other ravenous zombies. "
Thanks GamesPro, I REALLY wouldn't have known about this if you didn't tell me about them. </sarcasm> - Joomal, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4620. As a hunter, jump around alarmed parked cars so that humans will shoot them and set of their alarms.
21. As a tank, find a parked car and hit it into the survivors. If the car hits someone, it instantly incapacitates them. It's possible to get all 4 survivors in one car hit from the tank.
22. As a smoker, find the witch and pull a survivor into the witch. If any of his friends try to help, it's basically instant death. - jpjandrade, on 12/03/2008, -1/+43Left 4 Dead is awesome, but this list sucks. It's just plain common sense, not even a "you can melee the tongue to free your teammate from the smoker, no need to shoot the smoker" tip. And that's no advanced tip.
- CollapseControl, on 12/03/2008, -1/+38"The gas station in the No Mercy campaign can be blown up and will kill dozens of zombies if timed right. Do it!"
Speaking of....
Why is this the only map with a fully destructible area? There should be plenty more through other Campaigns. Doesn't have to be Gas Stations, but other parts of the map where you can setup a massive zombie massacre. - blademanx, on 12/04/2008, -0/+35Remember, these are the same guys who came up with "PROTIP: To defeat the cyberdemon, shoot at it until it dies."
- mwalker05, on 12/04/2008, -1/+35clearly you have not played left 4 dead with other people
- LucasVB, on 12/03/2008, -0/+30Wait, these are all basic parts of the gameplay.
- mwalker05, on 12/04/2008, -0/+28if this list is such common sense then why do 90% of the games players fail to do most of these things? A better list would be:
Everybody rush right off the bat in vs. dont give the zombies time to set up. stay in a close group. crouch in the front. follow the leader. dont straggle behind. always use the autoshotty, pistols only as a last resort or for range (smokers) -- you can melee and reload at the same time. save molotovs for tanks and pipe bombs for boomers. and most importantly: remember that you dont have to kill every zombie you come across. - winstonsmith303, on 12/03/2008, -0/+28God I love this game.
- MrQuoz, on 12/04/2008, -2/+28This is the most ridiculously retarded list I have ever read. Here are some facts in other games that might help you.
Super Mario Bros: Press A so you can jump or else you'lll die.
Zelda: Touching baddies will hurt you so try and avoid it.
Duck Hunt: Sometimes shooting multiple times will help you hit the ducks but don't run out of bullets.
. - LemonChicken, on 12/04/2008, -0/+19Like right now would be good.
- skeletorcares, on 12/03/2008, -0/+18my team 10 minutes ago could have used that.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+17omfg, TANK! kill it with FIRE!!!
- Gizza, on 12/04/2008, -0/+14Someone doesn't have 3 friends...
- Hero0fTime, on 12/04/2008, -2/+16Unlimited pistol ammo?? Thanks Gamepro!
- spaceshipsix, on 12/04/2008, -1/+15In that case he's already made the bad decision.
- Needles13, on 12/04/2008, -1/+12Where is the fun in doing any of these things?
Shoot the red cars. Never duck. Hold down the left mouse button until you run out of ammo(never stop shooting just because your teammate is in front of you).
Those are the real tips on how to succeed in this game.
And also, type "callvote ChangeDifficulty Expert" in the console during Versus and it starts a vote to change the difficulty to Expert. Expert versus = insane. - houndeyex, on 12/03/2008, -0/+11That's actually good to know.
- DarkProd, on 12/04/2008, -2/+13- Posted by Captain Obvious
- scalded, on 12/04/2008, -0/+11And less chance of gibbing your teammates with point-blank shotgun blasts to the head when they run in front of you. Speaking of which, don't do that.
- CynicalTyler, on 12/04/2008, -0/+9Now these are good tips!
- spaceshipsix, on 12/04/2008, -1/+10That thing you're typing on can also play it. And with the invention of the computer mouse you can shoot where you please without auto-aim.
- LemonChicken, on 12/04/2008, -2/+11I assumed the M16 was superior to the auto-shotgun. Better range, faster reload, more ammo beats fire power.
- Juaquin, on 12/04/2008, -1/+10I hate this game because you inevitably end up with a bunch of retard car-alarm-shooting, witch-startling idiots on your team. Otherwise, awesome.
- HxChris91, on 12/04/2008, -0/+8No, Melee-ing the smoker's tongue as it comes at you will do nothing, you have about half a second once you are wrapped up to do your damage to him - shooting him will kill him with very little damage.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+8Anyone who has played this game for more than 10 minutes has figured this out.
Here are my tips.
1. Never be the guy who is too far behind the other 3. You always cause the team to lose.
2. There is no such thing as moving too quickly as a survivor in versus mode.
3. Always take on the tank in an OPEN AREA. I cannot stress this enough. When you hear tank music, run for any open area of the map.
4. If you have a crappy connection to the server, you will not survive in advanced or expert modes. Get on another server.
5. Melee melee melee melee
6. Refer to tip #5 - spaceshipsix, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7These tips are awful. You learn 80% of these the first time you play (health packs heal you! No *****). And there are unlimited automatic shotguns, it doesn't disappear when some one picks it up.
The last sentence says it all: "And don't bother healing A.I. teammates. They're pretty damn good and rarely loose any health."
Play on expert and the AI characters will die twice in each chapter. - Foenetik, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7here's one - instead of trying to dodge the rocks the tank chunks at you, just shoot them. they are destructable.
- russbent, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7seriously... I always end up getting way more kills with the M16. Maybe we're doing something wrong?
- 2Bnor2B, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7I would stick to the PC if you can; otherwise you may miss out on the flood of custom maps once the SDK is released. There is a whole community of CS mappers already starting to work on some projects.
- Sieker, on 12/05/2008, -0/+6the rifle bullet goes through zombie bodies, making it very good for thinning out a horde before it gets to you. Once they're on a teammate, the rifle can pick them off around that teammate faster than either other weapon. I never run out of ammo before the next cache shows up, and I can save a friend from a hunter or smoker with ease. About the only situation where I wish I had a boomstick is when I end up the pointman.
So long as only one guy is carrying a rifle-- and he knows how to use it properly-- that party member will be useful. - Orbitrix, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6yea PC version wins by far, hands down... same with Team Fortress 2... valve does PC FPS better than anyone else imo
- Orsenfelt, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6#20 - If you find yourself playing Boomer a lot, bind a key to the "kill" command {Open console, 'bind x kill'}. With this, you can make the Boomer explode at will, excellent for jumping out on survivors and getting them when you really need to, even if you are empty. Everyone else just falls over.. So be careful where you bind it!
- cens337, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6Run or Shoot?? Run or Shoot???
BOTH!!
seems appropriate to add that to this list of all things common knowledge. - Moonsight, on 12/05/2008, -0/+6Ah... Versus mode. Rushing isn't the best way to put it. I would phrase it more like a "cautious sprint". Everyone follow the leader, lines are the safest. Grouping and moving in a cluster makes it easy for boomers to get you, and if a boomer gets all four of you, somebody will get hurt. Boomers will usually only get one person in the line, or at most, three, leaving one person capable of keeping an eye out for things. If you're leading, turning a blind eye to allies is stupid. Yes, run a little bit a head, but always check back to make sure things are alright. If the other three guys can't keep up with you, it's likely because you're not getting hit by special infected, they are, and you aren't waiting for them to catch up. Auto shotguns are a must, but in certain levels (for example, No Mercy Hospital, I believe it's stage four) hunting rifles can be very useful as they can pierce through multiple walls. Having three auto shotguns covering front, right break wall, left break wall, while one person blind fires hunting rifle up at vents, and to through walls often lotto kills the boomer (this is while waiting for the elevator). For infected players, the most important role for ANYONE to play is that of boomer. Good boomers can turn the tide of the game in an instant. It should be said that the Smoker is also a hugely important infected. More so than a hunter at least. The smoker often has the lowest score, but the ability to pull people away and separate them is huuuuge advantage. Use the smoker to pull the survivors into a waiting boomer. Use the smoker to slow survivors being chased by the tank. Pull survivors into the witch or the car. I can't stand people who just auto kill themselves while playing smoker because they can't figure out the many uses a smoker has. For players playing Tank, the most important thing to do is split the group. Forget about killing them. Yes, it's important to kill the survivors, but if you can split their group up, it makes your teams job a whole lot easier. Tanks should NOT go after a survivor that has been incapped. If the survivor is incapped, move on to another one. Doing that let's you get more people down (and thus win the game faster), and if the downed player is separated enough, a hunter can speed kill it faster than you can, thus saving time, and making the rest of the stage a lot easier for your team if you get killed. DO NOT hit a survivor that has a hunter on him. You will team kill the hunter, waste time, and likely allow that survivor to escape. Similar thing applies to a survivor trapped by a smoker, UNLESS that smoker is intentionally pulling that survivor towards you, or stopping the survivor from running from you. Use your judgment, and coordinate with the smoker in that scenario. Also, there are some REALLY cheap tank exploits. For example, getting a tank on No Mercy Stage 1 is a sure way to win. Hit the Red Car into the entrance to the safe room. They can't get through, and it's an easy game winner. An important thing to know is that hitting cars and forklifts will send them flying, and that hitting a survivor with a car is an instant incap. I've gotten over sixty thousand points as a tank when I incapped and killed an entire team by launching the white car down the alley way in No Mercy Stage 1. As a last note, if you're playing a tank against survivors with tier two weapons (survivors with auto shotguns), wait a bit. Don't lose control, but make sure you take the time to tell your team what you are going to do, and try and wait for them to spawn if they died. Smart usage of the tank involves splitting the survivors up. Tanks should NOT try to incap everyone by themselves. If you find yourself being distracted by a bunch of survivors and don't know which one to chase, go in the direction that has the most survivors. Try not to throw rocks unless the situation is truly desperate, or if there aren't any cars around, and the area is a walled straight path (such as the broken subway corridors in No Mercy Stage 2).
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6What I've learnt in the game is that any plan consisting of "RUN JUST RUN FUUCCCKK RUNNN" doesn't work. Which is a shame because it's the plan that's brought up the most times.
- Juaquin, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6I try to, but it's hard to find people online during the middle of the day while I'm skipping class.
- Tbags, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6Sniper rifel is actually king of all weapons if you learn to become a good shot. It deals THE most devastating damage, and I've always come out in 1st place against a tank using snipers. 15 headshots to the tank for each clip, you're bound to get it, only way with auto-shotty is if you are next to him, and if you are, you're probably gonna be dead soon.
- vanguardanon, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6I think I'm going to get an xbox360 just because of this game.
- djrbx, on 12/04/2008, -1/+6"#5: Weapons of Choice
The automatic shotgun is hands-down the most devastating weapon in Left 4 Dead. If you get first pick, snag it off the table loaded with firearms. Don't believe us? Watch the post-game stats for the guy who dealt the most damage to the Tank boss zombie--it's virtually guaranteed to be the guy with the automatic shotgun. The assault rifle is a close second and is capable of mowing down swarms of onrushing flesh-eaters with ease. "
As much as I agree with most of the list, I disagree with this one. I think the riffle should take the spot. I love the riffle, shotgun comes close second. I get the most kills using the riffle, and it having a faster reload with the ability to mow down the horde is an added bonus. - WocCixelsyd, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5Why is this list worthy of a digg to so many people? Anybody who has played the game will tell you that these are all things you will learn right away; the game tells most of these to you directly.
Bury this crap. - jc730, on 12/05/2008, -0/+58 survivors would be way to easy, no matter how many player zombies,
boss zombies are only good when they can catch someone off guard in chaotic situations, with 8 people there will always be people who arn't getting overwhelmed who would just snipe the hunters and smokers
4 per team is good - withoutamartyr, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5Also you'll get an achievement.
- 2Bnor2B, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5I must have played about 30 matches and only had two bad experiences, both users were kicked off the server within a minute. Ocasionally you will bump into a few noobs, but most of the time they just did not know what they did wrong. Just politely tell them and its all good. The sweet design of L4D's gameplay is that it does not really support jerks. By just playing well on a few random matches you will get lots of friends invites. My friends list must have tripled in size.
