- jtbndy, on 09/04/2008, -5/+180Obviously EA did not pay Gamespot enough in "advertising" to get a excellent review (8 is still pretty damn good).
- raphael7, on 09/04/2008, -13/+156Who cares, as long as I can continue to make phallic monsters - that's all that matters
- effinboy, on 09/04/2008, -12/+139Since when have I been able to trust what Gamespot says?
I'll just wait for the guys over at TRS to tell me what then think. - veduvaru, on 09/04/2008, -9/+1238? The way this game was hyped I was expecting it would get 9 and above across the board.
- Kenelm, on 09/04/2008, -4/+85I've been playing this game for the past two days, I'm currently in space stage, and I kind of agree with this test. Sorry, but this is not the game of the year.
From the beginning to the civilization stage, the game is fun. Gameplay mechanics are simple, but hey, it's the beginning of the game. I played on the highest difficulty setting, and while Gamespot said it's rather easy, huuuh... no. Or maybe I'm just bad, but I found it to quite challenging, as my whole tribe/civilization got completely wiped a few times.
Then, space stage. Supposed to be the best part of the game. Well I'm sorry but the best part was BEFORE the space stage. I've only spent a few hours on it, but it's VERY repetitive. You keep doing the same things:
- explore, find an item, find all 10 items of a collection, sometimes it's a trap, and you're attacked by pirates.
- meet other species, they give you randomly generated missions, something like "kill/scan/capture the creature/vehicle/plant/turret on planet [random planet] in the [random system] system", sometimes with a time limit.
- "Your planet [random planet] is attacked/victim of a terrible ecological disaster, do something about it". On the highest difficulty setting, there are so many planets attacked at the same time that you just keep defending your colonies, and nothing else, and the game gets really annoying.
No real indication of a "plot" so far, except for an alien race that is mentioned on the first mission, and on different items you find, and it has the same name on game I've started. So there might be a plot! But after having played for some hours, nothing else about this alien race. I just keep defending my planets, collecting spice, selling it, using the money to rebuild the defenses, defending my planets... - Wohlven, on 09/05/2008, -1/+63I read an Interview with Will Wright in this month's Game Informer and he even admitted the game was way over hyped and he wished people would not hype it so much. While he of course felt it was a good game, he didn't feel it was "earth shattering" or anything other than a simulation. Remember when the original Sim-City came out, or even the Sims? Not much hype at all, but look how they grew. This is a brand new IP from someone who has the vision to keep it fresh. Do I think Spore is going o be the biggest thing since sliced bread? No, but it will be something that is different than all the other copycats out there right now, and even if the game isn't perfect, something new and not perfect is better than 20 almost perfect games that are identical.
- sneezy555, on 09/05/2008, -4/+64You listen to Coldplay.
- SniperZero, on 09/05/2008, -14/+70buried for using gamespot.
- airwalkery2k, on 09/04/2008, -1/+45Still, I know how I am spending my Sunday...
- dunezone, on 09/05/2008, -3/+44Yeah, this game is garbage. I told this to my friend...
"Its amazing what you can make in the game and what little you can do with it"
There are five parts to this game and each part represents a different type of game: 2D Pacman, 3rd Person MMORPG(loosely), RTS, Civilization, and well I cant really name the last stage. The problem is, each one of these stages is a watered down version of what it represents. After six hours of playing this game you have seen it all and there's no incentive to replay it again cause it doesn't make much of a difference to the end result what actions you do early in the game. - pirlok, on 09/04/2008, -4/+42"Oozes charm at every turn" - yeah, 'cos having phallic-shaped monsters is always charming
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -8/+45wanna know how I know yer gay?
- duggtodeath, on 09/04/2008, -13/+49I have yet to play it, but I will declare GameSpot full of *****.
/fanboy - BigE89, on 09/05/2008, -4/+38Im waiting for Yahtzee's review
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -1/+31Good game in theory, but I can't get into it.
- jupaneanu, on 09/04/2008, -2/+32Kinda low if you think of all the hype surrounding it, but not bad
- curtis2, on 09/05/2008, -9/+37Don't listen to gamespot. Personally I think they lost credibility when they gave tony hawk 3 a 10/10.
- virtorio, on 09/05/2008, -1/+29Seems pretty consistent with most other reviews/comments I've read about it so far.
I would have preferred a new SimCity game (a real one, not like Societies). - visionaryIX, on 09/05/2008, -3/+30Good on them for having the balls to try something new.
They could have cashed in on another generic FPS in some dystopian future, and they didn't. - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+27And always oozing
- loneraven, on 09/05/2008, -0/+25Collage? Have you cut out enough pictures yet to complete your collage?
- sexualwasabi, on 09/04/2008, -6/+30Well I personally don't believe any Gamespot rating these days since they fired that one reviewer.... but I expected Spore to get a high rating anyways from anyone.
- mohsenxp, on 09/04/2008, -2/+26It's just one review.
- jryder, on 09/05/2008, -1/+23Well, here's the big picture then:
http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/spore
87/100, 13 reviews in, under the 9 (or in this case 90) score that I, too, was expecting. - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -5/+26Shut up.
Fallout 3
STALKER Clear Sky
Mirror's Edge
Far Cry 2
Left 4 Dead
Dead Space
Plus a bunch of other console games that are getting hyped that will probably be good like GoW2 (which I don't really care about because I'm not a console gamer) - dvsbastard, on 09/05/2008, -0/+21The key word in your comment is "hyped"... I am not saying the game is terrible (I haven't played it yet), but hype does not automatically translate into an excellent game, and in fact can be counter productive as it sets expectations too high.
- loneraven, on 09/05/2008, -1/+21I completely agree dunezone.
With all the hype, I expected so much more. Instead everything is too simplistic in nature. In the Cell stage, yea, it's essentially Pacman, all you do is eat orbs and attack other creatures. Particularly boring. They could've done so much more with this stage, as this is probably where you be the most creative. Also disappointing is the evolution from a cellular microbe to a land animal. There's no evolution in parts, like fins, gills, etc, instead you plop on two legs and you're a land animal.
Stage two isn't exciting either. It feels like a hack and slash without the slashing I guess. There's no real incentive to do anything here, you're just mostly walking around to collect parts to 'evolve.' You have goals of either allying with other animals or exterminating them, but why? What's the point? There's no food chain really, and you're never really under attack unless you initiate it yourself. Again, boring.
Stage three, the tribal stage is probably the worst of all. Once again, there's no real point in doing anything. You're basically doing the same thing as before, but just with a tribe. You can attack with a selection of a very few weapons (three) or you can perform with three different instruments. Not very intuitive and there's no point in it. You could pick either path: allying or attacking and nothing would change. Pretty much all the progress you make gets erased at the next stage.
Stage four, the civilization stage, is the best stage, IMO. But once again, they took something here and watered it down. The vehicle customizations are absolutely great, but they feel a bit limited in parts (can be easily upgraded later). Customizing the buildings... not so much. You can make all the buildings a plain box and be done with it. There's no incentive again to put anything on the building. The civilization stage is completely rudimentary. This stage definitely should've had a Civ 4 transplantation or something.
I've just started on stage five, and it appears to be pretty much the same thing. You are approached with more defined tasks, but it's more of the same thing. Do things over and over again without much consequence.
After each stage you pretty much lose all the progress you gained... ie gaining spice/money/food whatever. The game goes by way too fast. You shouldn't be able to go by every level in an hour or so. I was under the impression that this game would be epic, but it plainly falls short. Giving Spore an 8/10 is too much, personally it deserves closer to a 6.5/10. For all the hype and delays Spore has generated, I couldn't help but expect a better game, but instead you get a watered down experience. Perhaps expansions could make the game better, we'll see.
I admit, I did pirate the game (I had the game preordered on amazon), but after playing it for two days or so, there is no redeeming quality that I can justify paying $50 for, so I canceled my pre-order. Thank god, I'd have been even more pissed if I bought the game. Here's to hoping Will Wright will create a legitimate SimCity game as opposed to this overhyped piece of *****. - Premier, on 09/05/2008, -0/+19One of my biggest worries is the game having an overall point. They are really marketing this socially generated content hard, but is there really a point for it in the game? What I mean is that so far it seems that once you pass the initial 5 phases on development in the game everything just repeats itself from then on. You can get to the space stage, connect online, download all the new planets and creatures and then what? Just fly to another planet, see the creatures and civilizations there, and then what? Are there secret items to collect that will spawn beyond the ones that ship with the game? Are there other modes of gameplay? Or will it just be download latest updates, fly to new planets, check em out, rinse and repeat.
Every review I've read says the gameplay is simplistic and to really appreciate the game you have to connect online. But if all connecting online means is seeing more generated planets & creatures, without much for a reward for colonization of these tribes or planets, either via rankings or additional items, then it's just space tourism that will get boring after a while. The whole mysterious edge about flying to different solar systems and galaxies will have no point if it's just for observation or shoot & run visits. There has to be some real reward for flying to some far away galaxy and taking over it's planets, something that's viable in the game.
I haven't played it yet so these questions remain unanswered - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -2/+21Somebody's going to get fired.
Besides, I refuse to believe reviews nowadays. They will normally not prevent me from buying a game and thus I choose for myself whether the game is good or not. - farfegnugen, on 09/05/2008, -7/+25We'll have to wait for Yahtzee to review it. That's the only review I trust anymore.
- SeVeRyourTies, on 09/04/2008, -1/+19Methinks you don't know what "phallic" means, Sherman.
- steveoondyou, on 09/05/2008, -0/+16i've been playin it too.... the game finishes too fast. its got enough replay to make a few different "civilizations," but the game itself isn't a mind blowing experience that'll give you explosive diarrhea. It's kinda cool though... i guess. wish it was more.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -4/+18Cause you love to chug ***** and eat cum from a spoon?
- mbonzo531, on 09/05/2008, -0/+14Yea Gamespot doesn't have the best reputation for giving accurate game reviews.
- Chandon, on 09/05/2008, -1/+15The version on TPB isn't limited to any specific number of installs.
- BlueSkyfish, on 09/05/2008, -1/+15They must not have paid enough for a 10.
- Risingashes, on 09/05/2008, -1/+13As much as I was anticipating this game, the letdown was kind of expected.
You can't expect a polished set of 5 different playstyles from a single game. - VacantThoughts, on 09/05/2008, -2/+13They aren't, tribal stage is horrible, Civ is not much better, but space is pretty awesome, and creature is kinda fun.
Overall its only redeeming factor is the space stage, which also gets old after a couple hours because you have to defend one of your planets like every 2 minutes. Well the creators are all pretty cool also, but it sucks that the space ship creator uses all the same parts as the vehicle creator plus like 15 extra space parts. - Terasiel, on 09/05/2008, -0/+11and the rest of Tuesday.....
- Mothrog, on 09/05/2008, -2/+13Is it still limited to 3 installs? If so, I couldn't care less how good it is.
- random12345, on 11/16/2008, -9/+20Buried for gamespot.
- virtualball, on 09/05/2008, -0/+11Public school at its finest!
- anjolly1, on 09/04/2008, -2/+12Get over it dude!
- tapeworm77, on 09/04/2008, -0/+10Guess not.
- dbldn, on 09/04/2008, -9/+19I kind of hope Spore is mediocre. That way I can spend my time with some of the 13 other games coming out this Fall.
- Xansas, on 09/05/2008, -0/+9Sure, but it's also one off from a 7! As if that means anything anyway!
- crossmr, on 09/05/2008, -1/+10That's because it is all hype. I played it to space age yesterday and it is boring.. they made a great creature editor, too bad they forgot to attach a game.
Like oblivion everyone will be so amazed and in awe that they'll fail to notice that.. but the first time you play it try to forget its spore and you'll see what I mean. - Typhoon2009, on 09/05/2008, -0/+9I usually trust IGN reviews. I also like to look through GameFAQs User Reviews. Take the best scored review, the lowest scored review, and one or two average score reviews.
- HillerMylife, on 09/05/2008, -3/+1287/100 on Metacritic is far, far too high for this game. Hype should be ignored when writing a review, and this game is worth probably 5 or 6 out of 10, due to its simplistic gameplay and lack of replayability (surprisingly!). Of course, that's also assuming a real 1 - 10 scale, instead of the 7 - 10 scale employed by every reviewer today.
- roxgod666, on 09/05/2008, -1/+10Because you macramed yourself a pair of jean shorts.
