Dual core processor (Intel Pentium D or above)
2GB of RAM
18GB of hard drive space
512MB Direct 3D 10 compatible video card or Direct3D 9 card
DVD dual-layer drive - rolandvvv, on 09/15/2008, -6/+107Wow, this article was extremely biased towards consoles. Yes, I get it, you don't have to upgrade your console to play this game. But there is a reason I game on a PC and I don't much appreciate your bashing. STFU and tell me the recommended specs.
Skip the article and just read this - its all that is worth reading:
"The recommended specs for GTA IV are; Windows XP SP2, Dual core processor (Intel Pentium D or above), 2GB of RAM, 18GB of hard drive space, a 512MB Direct 3D 10 compatible video card or Direct3D 9 card, and a DVD dual-layer drive." - ZurMacht, on 09/15/2008, -4/+9118GB of HD space...
*****. - uzusan, on 09/15/2008, -4/+83Thank god i didn't need to upgrade my console when i wanted to play the next installment in the gta series after enjoying 3, vice city and san andreas.
oh wait. - JohnsonGotOwned, on 09/16/2008, -4/+6318GB? Are you ***** serious? That's just crazy.
- AwwSchucks, on 09/15/2008, -6/+55512 mb video? ouch
- skabyss, on 09/15/2008, -5/+53Damn, time to upgrade I guess...
512 on memory dont seem too bad, but 18gb of HDD space is ***** ridiculous - inactive, on 09/15/2008, -5/+53Considering you can buy a PC that meets the minimum specs that costs less than a PS3, I'd say this-gen has officially become last gen, and in the next two years gaming is moving back to PC's in a big way...
- ccb621, on 09/15/2008, -2/+40Seeing as how most movie DVD's are dual-layer, I'm pretty sure nearly every DVD drive on the market can READ dual-layer DVD's. You would also be hard-pressed to find a drive today that does not write dual-layer.
- loganhid, on 09/15/2008, -7/+42Two of my friend's died trying to run Crysis
- LMN8R, on 09/16/2008, -2/+36What kind of stupid ***** article description is that? Why are they talking about PC upgrades as if this is a new concept that hasn't existed for the last two decades of PC gaming?
List the specs, and shut the ***** up about it if you can't bother to insert even the tiniest bit of intelligence into your editorial.
These specs are nothing special for someone who can run a game like Crysis at High settings - in other words, the millions of PC gamers out there with 8800s or better and dual-core processors.
Also, people bitch and moan about system specs being unrealistic, but the fact is that *RECOMMENDED* system specs for practically every game for the last year have been for systems that can play the game on *HIGH* settings. For GTA 4, that's no doubt way-better-than-consoles settings.
256MB video cards will of course be able to run this game - even at console-level settings. Just not max. - ExSlashdotter, on 09/16/2008, -3/+35WTF do you mean "Gone are the days of the Nintendo 64 era when one had to go out and buy the Expansion Pak" ?
There were TWO games that required the expansion pack (and it came packaged with one of them), and another TWO games that required it for major features. Sure, it made little graphical enhancements to 52 other games, but you didn't *need* it by any stretch.
The article makes it sound like the N64 was a constant nightmare of a slew of required upgrades.
"No sirree, we gamers of the 21st century expect to be able to play all the latest games on our beautiful next-gen consoles until the day the post-next-gen consoles are released."
Oh, so not like the HD-DVD add-on for the 360 either? (yes, i know that no games were released for it. its still an add-on though) - inactive, on 09/16/2008, -3/+29bad website is bad
- upchucknorris1, on 09/15/2008, -3/+24Before people start freaking out about upgrades, realize those are the recommended specs, not the minimum requirements. The minimum will be a bit lower.
- eloestea, on 09/15/2008, -8/+29This day and age, 18 gigs isnt that big anymore.
- rolandvvv, on 09/15/2008, -2/+23Are you trying to assume I'm hurting?
Nope. I'm doing just great thanks.
Let me know who's hurting in two years when you have to buy a new console. - mywhitenoise, on 09/16/2008, -5/+2518GBs is 20% of my music library. About 20 feature films. It's a ***** of porn.
18GBs is still A LOT. - inactive, on 09/16/2008, -3/+20***** article, of course you'll need higher specs when the game looks better.
Also, one word, MODS. - samthurston, on 09/16/2008, -4/+21The second greatest thing about owning a next-gen console is paying $250+ every 5 years to replace it so that you can have your nose in the air about how you didn't have to spend $100 on a new video adapter and $100 on ram.
- Ganpachi, on 09/16/2008, -3/+19Awesome. My PC still kicks the crap out of those recommended specs and it is over a year old.
- Shogi, on 09/15/2008, -2/+17I don't see how the 2GB of ram is a surprise, it's not the first to require it, and given GTA's massive draw distances and environments, I'm not surprised at all.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 09/16/2008, -2/+17For those complaining about 18GB.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ...
18GB isn't exactly what it used to be. - D0P3M4N, on 09/16/2008, -4/+18Thats *video card* memory. You need 2GB of system memory.
- thecheatah, on 09/16/2008, -0/+14who the ***** measures space like that?
- AWhiteSinner, on 09/16/2008, -1/+14Age Of Conan was 25GB, that's nuts.
- theinsane, on 09/16/2008, -0/+13One has to be careful when putting the words "*****" and "porn" in the same sentence.
- Shogi, on 09/15/2008, -2/+15Not everyone.
- PueSi, on 09/16/2008, -5/+17This game is going to be WAY better on the PC, we'll be able to play it without the horrible framerate (either by upgrading or lowering the settings).
- dullnation, on 09/16/2008, -0/+12Obviously not, its totally normal to embed code into a image.
- nubnub99, on 09/15/2008, -1/+12I think I'm going to be able to run this! But 18GB of disk space? I guess that includes 15GB of LHC reports just to fill it :)?
Also, what's with the Javascript in the OP's avatar?
http://digg.com/users/upick/s.png - jermm, on 09/15/2008, -2/+13Some (read:old and crappy) DVD drives can't read DL disks. 99% (number out of ass) of DVD drives can read DL. However, a large amount of DVD Burners can't burn DL-DVDs
- LethalGeek, on 09/16/2008, -0/+11I know I typo and misspell a lot of words, but holy crap man that was horrible. Stop and check your ***** next time.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -4/+15 Poor PC gamers. Running the game in high resolution, full draw distance with anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering. How will we ever cope?
- Dubbsacc, on 09/16/2008, -0/+10I know right, I built this PC in Feb. 2006. I'm still good, no need to upgrade to play GTA IV, good news.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 09/16/2008, -0/+10Since when has a game EVER listed a minimum total size for a hard-disk instead of free space you need available on a hard-disk? I'll go ahead and tell you, no one.
- AlphaNeonic, on 09/16/2008, -0/+10After the whole Spore mess they should start listing 'DRM Tolerance Level' in the specs.
"Online authentication? Only 3 installs... EVER?... ONE account per game??? Pass." - mooninite, on 09/16/2008, -0/+9Hm, check out his profile. Just joined this year and he has over 30,000 diggs.
Dubelu Tee Eff. - stereoa, on 09/15/2008, -3/+12320mb.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -2/+11you're only being dugg down because nobody /b/elieves you will actually delete your /b/ folder
- MScrip, on 09/16/2008, -8/+17Really? That's not a lot of space at all. One hour of DV is 13GB.
Besides... once GTA IV is installed, those 18GBs of graphics and textures will be accessed on a fast hard drive... not a slow optical disc. - JayRD, on 09/16/2008, -3/+12Where do people get the idea that you have to do yearly upgrades? Only the most hardcore do that to keep their games running smooth in their insane resolutions like 1920x1200. Your average Joe PC gamer uses 1024x768 up to 1440x900, which isn't very intensive, and mid range hardware would get nice frame rates at those resolutions.
- hectord27, on 09/15/2008, -5/+14Looks like I need to upgrade....everything....
damn laptops - BenKenobi88, on 09/16/2008, -0/+9I don't think that's including the windows install...
- PueSi, on 09/16/2008, -1/+9Those GBs add up when you have multiple games installed.
- Planets, on 09/16/2008, -2/+10"The greatest thing about owning a next-gen console is that you know you won ’t be needing to upgrade that puppy to play the latest and greatest games on it. "
On the other hand, the greatest thing about owning a PC is that you're not limited to what a console is capable of. - crownedgriffin, on 09/16/2008, -1/+9We'll download bad ass mods to bury our sorrows.
- skabyss, on 09/15/2008, -0/+8I'll be damned, some sort of trojan-java, hes up to no good if you ask me!
- Evilblobs, on 09/16/2008, -2/+10512 became mainstream about.... 3 years ago.
Lose the Intel Intergrated, or GeForce 5 series that you're probably rocking.
Those recommended specs constitute maybe a 400$ computer. - inactive, on 09/15/2008, -11/+19A DVD+DL player? I don't see why they do a normal DVD player, I have a DL player but I know many who don't. The only other semi-surprise here is probably the 2 GB RAM maybe?
- kalv, on 09/16/2008, -0/+8Good thing i haven't upgraded my computer for 4 years. Man i can't wait to play all the new games.
