- skennedy, on 06/25/2008, -1/+42It has to be. The fact that Blizzard took the Diablo3.com domain last month is very telling.
- NightRiderkami, on 06/25/2008, -0/+41I'd be surprised if it wasn't Diablo 3
- ArchetypeRyan, on 06/26/2008, -1/+32Exploding corpses are about to become a whole lot more popular.
- kinseyincanada, on 06/26/2008, -1/+31If it isnt Diablo 3 there is going to be a ***** load of pissed of forum users.
- bonjourmr, on 06/26/2008, -1/+30Hope its an entirely new game, just to piss every party with a theory off.
- decepticrat, on 06/25/2008, -1/+30Diablo II was, and likely still is, my favorite online-multiplayer game of all time. I spent months on end developing characters and playing the levels over and over again. Never got old! I had a druid/bear that couldn't be beaten, hehe.
Man, I don't know whether I'm excited or apprehensive at the possibility of Diablo III... lol :) - Rhendal, on 06/26/2008, -1/+29I love how everyone is looking at the Ice and the names of the secret pictures are "Cold", "Tundra", "Cavern" and "Icy" and is thinking Wrath of the Lich King or Diablo Act 5. Doesn't anyone else stop and realize that the name of the company itself is Blizzard?
- oriyn142, on 06/26/2008, -1/+18Hopefully this one won't cost $15/mo to play...
- bixby1, on 06/25/2008, -0/+16Convinced at reason #4, a German says so. Brace yourselves!
- dleesgeetar, on 06/25/2008, -1/+16funny how i've played about everything from Blizzard but the Diablo series, maybe i'll have to try this one
- rentmitchum, on 06/26/2008, -0/+15Starcraft 2 on the horizon and now possible Diablo 3? I can't handle this much joy. It burns us.
- estvir, on 06/26/2008, -0/+14I'll form a mob with pitchforks and march to Blizzard headquarters if it isn't Diablo3.
- LimeParrot, on 06/26/2008, -0/+14Diablo II is still worth a run-through while you wait. Better prepare your clicking finger though =)
- woulok, on 06/26/2008, -0/+14My pants are at full tent even thinking about Diablo III
- vanishedlight, on 06/26/2008, -1/+15diablo 3's coming out? but i'm not done with diablo 2 yet!
- Striss, on 06/26/2008, -0/+14The numbers on the jpegs that make up the weird purple monster so far are "4, 15, 16, 23". That's the Lost numbers...which seems like a hint to Lost Vikings. But that only means Blizzard loves screwing with our heads, and it could still be absolutely anything. Blizzard are pure evil.
- inactive, on 06/26/2008, -1/+14Diablo 3, Wrath of the Lich King, Fable 2....it's all too muchUAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- LimeParrot, on 06/26/2008, -0/+13Why did they try to sue you?
- Eldorian, on 06/26/2008, -0/+12They forgot the fact that June 29th is the 8th anniversary of the release of Diablo 2.
And there's a big press conference at WWI Sunday June 29th (I'll be there) - bosssmiley, on 06/26/2008, -1/+13I can see the WoW chat now: "LFG for raid on Blizzard HQ." :-)
- aristan, on 06/26/2008, -1/+12I love Diablo & play WoW now, but seriously guys. They're about to release Lich King which already has been shown to have ice & snow theming. I think they're about to debut a new version of WorldofWarcraft.com themed for the new expansion pack. The same way they did a couple of months prior to The Burning Crusade coming out. Diablo's website gets the icy makeover because it redirects back to Blizzard's main website. Sorry, Diablo 3... maybe not.
But I SO would buy it if it did come out lol. - cobracommander, on 06/25/2008, -0/+11Reminds me of sitting in my boxers and eating red vines + dr. pepper during summer nights whilst playing the first diablo years ago. Fun fun.

Five Reasons We Think Diablo III Will Be Announced
Nothing's official, but we build our case for why we expect the unveiling.
By Kris Pigna, 06/25/2008
This weekend, Blizzard's 2008 Worldwide Invitational kicks off in Paris, France, and it will host the official unveiling of Diablo III.
Okay, we have absolutely no official information to back that up. So why, then, do we state it so confidently? Simple: Last year's Invitational in Seoul, South Korea hosted the unveiling of Starcraft II, and we've compiled a hefty list of evidence that clearly suggests Diablo III will follow in its Zergling footsteps. Behold these reasons five:
Reason the First: Blizzard's Big Tease
Remember when we said the teaser image that showed up on a Blizzard splash screen the other day was most likely for Wrath of the Lich King? Uh, we're going to have to call a mulligan on that. There have been some updates to the image since it first showed up, and while it's not conclusively pointing toward Diablo III, it's certainly not conclusively pointing toward Wrath of the Lich King, either.
DiabloFans has done some bang-up detective work on this, and they've discovered a number of interesting aspects to the tease. When it first showed up, there was an image visible in the ice that resembled a rune from the Frostmourne sword, which Warcraft fans would know seemed to suggest a Wrath of the Lich King connection. But yesterday, another rune showed up that clearly resembled the Hel Rune from Diablo II. Confirmation! Clearly this means the teaser points to a Diablo III announcement, right?
Well, not necessarily. There was yet another update today, and this time there's a rune resembling the Akilae Tribe symbol from Starcraft II. This means all three of Blizzard's big franchises have gotten a nod in the tease so far, with two more runes likely showing up tomorrow and Friday. Confusing things even further is that with each day, an additional segment of a piece of concept art has been revealed in the master.CSS of the splash page, and when put together it evidently may be some sort of...monstrous penguin?
Okay, so what does it all mean? Well...hell if we know, to be honest. But it is worth noting, as DiabloFans has, that so far the runes are shaping up into what may work out into a pentagram shape. Pentagrams are certainly hellish, aren't they? And not for nothing, but it does look like that ice is melting as though something really hot was underneath. Doesn't it? Doesn't it? Hmm....
Reason the Second: Diablo's Domain
While we're on the subject, guess what DiabloFans.com used to be called? Diablo3.com, until Blizzard acquired the domain name from the site's owner back in May. Website domain names are registered for plenty of reasons, though; it could be as simple as a company wanting the peace of mind of owning every possible aspect of their IP. We would have easily guessed Blizzard's intentions were simply cautionary, but the timing (and all the additional evidence surrounding it) makes us wonder if they don't have bigger intentions for the site after all. Every now and then a company has to register a domain name because they actually plan to use it, right?
Reason the Third: We Know a New Game Announcement is Coming
That is, at least, if Xfire is to be believed. Back on Friday the 13 (spooky!), DiabloII.com noticed a now-edited update on Xfire regarding the Invitational, which originally read in part, "follow the opening ceremony and discover what new game will be announced in our chat rooms together with hundreds of other Blizzard fans." Yes, new game (which happens to be the part of the announcement that was later redacted). Of course, that doesn't at all mean it's necessarily Diablo III, but again, added with all the other evidence, it sure is easy to read it that way.
Reason the Fourth: A German Magazine Said So (Sort of)
Okay, we're getting a bit desperate here, but what the hell -- no self-respecting bout of wild speculation is complete until you scrape the bottom of the barrel. Earlier this month, Blizzplanet posted a story they picked up from German magazine PC Action. In its latest issue, the mag printed this scintillating riddle (translated from its original German):
"30.05.2008 10:55 - We found out some secret information about a much awaited game, from a very well known game developer, whom we can't name.
Sounds extremely important, doesn't it? Let's say: Pure thought about it makes our bedsheets wet. Got any ideas? Post them in the comments. Even if the hell froze and cows gave beer - we would spill nothing out!"
You see, because they said hell, and they said cows, they may be hinting at Diablo III! ("Cows" being a reference to the secret Cow Level in Diablo II.) Hey, we said bottom of the barrel, didn't we?
Reason the Fifth: What Else Would Blizzard Make?
Look, there are two certainties in life -- Macho Man Randy Savage is the baddest dude on the planet, and corporations will do whatever makes them money. Square Enix will probably remake Final Fantasy VII, George Lucas will probably make another proper Star Wars movie (and we don't mean this Clone Wars crap), and Blizzard will make Diablo III.
In fact, they kind of already did -- we have it on good authority that Diablo-creator Blizzard North was working on Diablo III back in 2005, before the studio was dissolved in August of that year, and the game was scrapped. And as recently as 2006, Blizzard was still hinting at wanting to continue the Diablo franchise, when COO Paul Sams said in an interview, "StarCraft is my absolutely favorite game of all time. As you probably already know, there is no doubt that we will continue the StarCraft and Diablo franchise, and trust me, I will be the happiest person in the world when we announce StarCraft 2." If we at least know Blizzard wanted to make Diablo III at one point, why would anything have changed since then?
And really, barring a Diablo III announcement, what else would Blizzard make? World of Warcraft is a self-perpetuating machine (with a brand new expansion incoming), Starcraft II is on its way sometime this year, and unless Blizzard is planning to announce The Lost Vikings 3: Vegas Stakes, that only leaves Diablo as the last (recently) untapped major franchise from the star developer. A recently untapped franchise that, when tapped again, will probably earn Blizzard another nonillion damn dollars.
To cut to the chase: If there isn't a Diablo III announcement by the end of this week, we'll eat our hats. (Please don't hold us to that, though.) - LimeParrot, on 06/26/2008, -0/+9I hope it is so that all the Diablo fans can be happy. I'm still waiting for Freespace 3 (which is pretty much impossible :'[ )
- xtmno3, on 06/26/2008, -0/+9I don't see what all the fuss is. Even if they announce Diablo 3, it will be like 6 years before it gets made. It is blizzard we are talking about here.
- djseligman, on 06/25/2008, -1/+10Diablo II=Best game ever!
- theshiz892, on 06/26/2008, -0/+9I would like to know this also. I would assume they had a good reason.
- kublerross, on 06/26/2008, -0/+8just please god dont let it be another pay per month MMORPG
diablo has always been primarily a single player game! dont screw us blizzard! - lcmatt, on 06/26/2008, -0/+8The hours I used to spend doing Baal runs just so my necro could acquire the full matching armour.
- MalkyMalc, on 06/26/2008, -1/+8Hah! Good point.
- TsarDusan, on 06/26/2008, -0/+7now i just feel stupid
- dixienormous101, on 06/26/2008, -0/+7can someone copy/paste the article, or the main reasons into the comments? Work block-age :(. This game's gonna kick so much ass...
- digitalmoto, on 06/26/2008, -0/+7a great gaming franchise - how could they not put out III.
- ccbbb23, on 06/26/2008, -0/+7Warty, Recode the mind. You can do it.

I was having sex with the radio on when John Lennon was shot and killed. You think I think of Mark David Chapman and John Lennon every time I have sex? - chrgrose, on 06/26/2008, -1/+7Its either a Diablo sequal or a completely new franchise. I do recall Blizzard kind of hinting at a new franchise at previous events and such.
- iamjboyd, on 06/26/2008, -1/+7omg omg omg
- MarkDykeman, on 06/25/2008, -0/+6Here's hoping...
- strictlybogart, on 06/26/2008, -0/+6Diablo 3, KOTOR 3, Fallout 3, Battlefront 3
There's something about having to wait for 3's for a very long time. - ripple123, on 06/26/2008, -0/+5I'm pretty sure posting in a digg forum about diablo 3 pretty much means you forfeit your right to call other people nerds without looking like a total hypocrite.
- kupa, on 06/26/2008, -0/+5just a thought, but diablo II did end in Act5, a mostly snowy and icy area situated around, on, and within Mt. Arreat.
plus "hell has frozen over, D3!" doesn't make any sense at all? in light of sc2's "Hell, It's about time" it sort of works don't you think? - HouseCentipede, on 06/26/2008, -0/+5Yes.
- Andrwmorph, on 06/26/2008, -1/+6Lost Vikings 3 ftw!
- timthe1st, on 06/26/2008, -1/+6The same people that are digging you down now.
- Fastine, on 06/26/2008, -0/+5Correction - One of the markings matches Frostmourne. The one currently at the top right matches a rune (Hel?) in Diablo II, the one at the bottom left is a protoss symbol, and I haven't confirmed the one on the bottom right.
I'm pretty sure it's not going to be the announcement of the release date. They have never teased a release date before, only new game announcements. Plus, many a Blizzard employee has stated "A new game is being announced at WWI". - Omek, on 06/26/2008, -0/+5I'll bring the tar and feathers. ;-)
- LimeParrot, on 06/26/2008, -0/+5The article made it pretty clear that it's unreliable, but seriously, the "hell freezes over" and "cow" sentence is a HUGE hint... I don't think that's a coincidence at all!
- Gneekman, on 06/26/2008, -0/+5As long as Diablo III is subscription-free, I will be a happy happy man.
- Rhendal, on 06/26/2008, -0/+4Why would they announce Wrath of the Lich King if they already announced it? also, the one rune is from Arthas' sword, but how about the Diablo Hel rune and the Starcraft Protoss insignia? eh? EH?
- MemoryDump, on 06/26/2008, -0/+4you can see some glowing eyes now on that splash screen
