- UnterDenLinden, on 11/02/2008, -37/+855How else would they fix this problem? This seems like relatively fast solution. Not great of them to misprint things in the first place, but seriously, how else would they solve it?
- freefallgrue, on 11/02/2008, -24/+792That's hardly the point. We're bashing EA here, please join in.
- freefallgrue, on 11/02/2008, -40/+657Typical EA.
"We suck balls, please clean up after us. Kthx. Also enjoy your virus, er, DRM" - Aurabolt, on 11/03/2008, -12/+370Alternate solution: Pirate and use the included keygen.
- inactive, on 11/03/2008, -12/+181Probably would have been smarter to put the "call us and we'll send a replacement" BEFORE the "guess" part...
- inactive, on 11/03/2008, -48/+197***** EA!
- d2002, on 11/03/2008, -16/+156It would be really funny if your missing digit isn't the first or last number.
- Setherex, on 11/03/2008, -4/+143EA buy good studio
EA turn studio bad
EA kill (fps series)
EA kill (rts series)
EA make unfinished games - LaueOfficer, on 11/03/2008, -5/+143their....
- ravage86, on 11/03/2008, -8/+135They could provide a webpage where you could enter the first 19 digits and it can do the "guessing" for you... surely a simple script for them to make.
- nyx210, on 11/03/2008, -8/+123"you can basically try 'guessing' the last character."
Yeah, then they'll ban you and accuse you of trying to pirate their games after you enter in the wrong code too many times... - Rewdog, on 11/03/2008, -0/+93They should have called it 'brute forcing' to make people think what they were doing was awesome.
- dsmx, on 11/02/2008, -7/+97By any definition Securom is a virus, which begs the question why do people pay money to install a virus on their computer?
- apothekari, on 11/03/2008, -1/+84"136 of 246 people found this answer helpful."
I know 136 people who are part of the problem... - slifty, on 11/03/2008, -7/+89EA like fritos
EA like tab and mountain dew - inactive, on 11/03/2008, -6/+81EA wanna be rockstar
EA make madden every year - doublej42, on 11/03/2008, -1/+74The best solution would be to create a key gen or a downloadable installed. A keygen that takes the first 19 and then generates teh last letter would take 2-3 hours to write via a web interface.
My friend had this issue and after 3 tries the install quits so it took him 20 letters to get the right one (around 2 hours) - AltF3, on 11/03/2008, -9/+82That would require EA to give a flying ***** about their customers.
- tkaStryc9, on 11/03/2008, -8/+75Ways to make people not want your to buy your game.
By Electronic Arts
1. Make what used to be a fun fast paced strategy game dull, slow and boring.
2. Add excessive DRM that makes buying the game more like renting it X number of times.
3. Threaten people with being cut off from playing their games online because some forum moderator got pissed at you and decided to ban you for no reason.
4. Make people guess what the last character of the CD Key is by going from A to Z and from 0 to 9.
Four reason why I won't be buying Red Alert 3 or any other EA game anytime soon. - Kiboney, on 11/03/2008, -2/+653 words: The Pirate Bay
- bipolarruledout, on 11/03/2008, -1/+63At least they gave you the first 19... any less than that and it would be much larger pain the ass.
- bbhh, on 11/03/2008, -3/+57FCKGW-RHQQ2-YXRKT-8TG6W-2B7Q8
- kidwithsword, on 11/03/2008, -8/+60OMFG. This made my day...
- tidrion, on 11/03/2008, -5/+56Here is a test, start the A-Z 0-9 guessing when you call, see if you find the answer before a human actually answers.
- bryGPO, on 11/03/2008, -1/+50i hate to be "that guy", but valve is the lead behind L4D, not EA, they're pretty much just doing the port over to consoles like they did for the orange box
- kronaslor, on 11/03/2008, -1/+49EA treats customers as pirates.
EA makes customer into pirates. - matt.rubin, on 11/03/2008, -0/+46the best was office 97 upgrade version. When you put in the disk it would ask to show where a previous office was. Just tell the installer to look in the CD-rom drive and it would be like duh ok.
- mikbunn, on 11/03/2008, -2/+46But they'd need all kinds of programming know-how to do that! Where are they going to find people to make this thing?
- mytCbumps, on 11/03/2008, -2/+46They'll probably ban you for using the correct one, too.
- Sokkratez, on 11/03/2008, -1/+43Anybody else think of Stewie? "111-1111... damn! 111-1112... damn!"
Anyway, it's a good solution. Best case scenario is having it be the first or last digit missing, really. It's fortunate that it was such a uniform ***** up or the solution would be a lot worse. - Devine122, on 11/03/2008, -1/+43***** yEA!
- DrLeePhD, on 11/03/2008, -1/+42"Vote it down!!! I want to see "136 out of 86,279 users found this helpful."
- Enasni1212, on 11/03/2008, -4/+44I know it's cool to bash EA, but really, this solution is exactly what I would do in that situation. A pain in the ass? Yes. But why is it so unreasonable for them to suggest it?
- freefallgrue, on 11/02/2008, -1/+40Couldn't tell ya. It pains me to have to pass on Dead Space, but I'll freely admit I simply don't have the Windows knowledge to fix anything that it might break.
- daqq, on 11/03/2008, -4/+43It would also be funny if the world spun backwards... but that's hardly the issue.
- mycoplasma, on 11/03/2008, -0/+385. Blame low sales on pirates.
6. See step 2. - neilyn, on 11/03/2008, -1/+39So do you guys both work at EA then?
- inactive, on 11/03/2008, -4/+41mission failed, comrade general
- arcooke, on 11/03/2008, -1/+34therightclique... do yourself a favor and know what you're talking about before trying to make a point in the future.
Keygens produce cd keys that ONLY validate during installation. To gain access to multilayer features, your CD key has to be checked against a database of pre-generated CD keys. If the one you generated isn't in their list, you can't play online.
Considering the cd keys are 20 alphanumeric characters long, the odds that you just so happen to generate a valid one are like one in 900 zillion. - Ahnteis, on 11/03/2008, -3/+35Actually it's not a virus by any definition. You might be able to argue it's a rootkit or trojan horse, but calling it a virus is just plain wrong.
- bbandito, on 11/03/2008, -0/+31Of course when you guess the last character you will have technically hacked the games protection system via a brute force password scan. EA will probably then have you carted off for attempting to bypass the protection in violation of the EULA. Ha ha ha EA you take suckage to new levels.
- Zoojeff, on 11/03/2008, -5/+36You are sooooo right,
And I must add that, you gotta be stupid to not thinking about it in the first place, clearly the fastest way to do it - therightclique, on 11/03/2008, -2/+32you didn't ***** guess 6 characters dude. sorry. never happened.
- Trollbane, on 11/03/2008, -5/+33"See my left ball here? Well that's pretty much just sucked by E. And my right ball over here; that ones sucked by A. So together, EA pretty much sucks my balls."
- MCA2142, on 11/03/2008, -2/+30What's wrong with E_?
- Jektal, on 11/03/2008, -1/+27It would always be the last character, because it was a misprint. Not an evil code gnome maliciously deleting random characters
- therightclique, on 11/03/2008, -0/+25can you keep going? i'm not really sure what to do after 1.
- inactive, on 11/03/2008, -2/+26keygen != online play
- MackDiesel2010, on 11/03/2008, -1/+25Does work...
