- VeroAvitar, on 05/07/2008, -37/+3shocking?
- Charlotte_Web, on 05/07/2008, -5/+2Weren't they supposed to be moving away from Doom in particular and FPS whack-a-mole games in general? I thought I had read that when Doom 3 was released.
- therightclique, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4they stated, like days after doom3 was released, that doom3 would not be the last doom game.
- ModernGeek, on 05/08/2008, -1/+2I heard a guy in an id interview specifically say that there would not be a Doom 4, when on the subject of changing their style of games.
- therightclique, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4they stated, like days after doom3 was released, that doom3 would not be the last doom game.
- humperdeath, on 05/07/2008, -16/+9Doom3 sucked as a game, because it involved too much thinking. I want a game that I can just run from point A to B and shoot everything that moves. No story, no missions. Just fast action and one big ugly MF Boss at the end of each level. There, I said it.!
- Light11, on 05/07/2008, -1/+11metal slug.
- waylander632, on 05/07/2008, -1/+14Serious Sam
- jezsik, on 05/07/2008, -2/+8Ah, you're looking for Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3! Hopefully they'll have a version 4 coming out sometime before Doom 4.
- stopbrorape, on 05/07/2008, -2/+7I guess you really hated Bioshock and Half-life2 then.
- humperdeath, on 05/08/2008, -2/+2Uh, yes.
- rabidbob, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Doom 3 .... thinking ... ???
You must have a different version than the one I bought, which was a simple FPS. It's a shame as it was a fun game which could have been a LOT more than what it was.
- RealmDown, on 05/07/2008, -2/+13Doom 3 did not live up to the hype. Doom & Doom II were pure escapism at its best. The chain gun was especially awesome.
My playtime was called, "Saving all life in the known universe by killing anything that moves." - CheekyBunky, on 05/07/2008, -4/+4Spam much? I wouldn't call it shocking, I'd call it expansion on one of the most succesful franchises in gaming

- Stemnin, on 05/07/2008, -2/+16Hmm, that's one doomed space marine.
- ixid, on 05/07/2008, -18/+5Who are the idiots digging this down? It's weird how recently random and inoffensive comments (with this one being entirely in context) are getting dug down. Busybodies.
- HeDiggMe, on 05/07/2008, -6/+28Come get some is from Duke Nukem. Thats like quoting Godfather while announcing Goodfellas 2.
- therightclique, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6no. "Come get some" is from Army of Darkness. Duke Nukem just stole it, along with lines from They Live.
- twiztidsinz, on 05/07/2008, -3/+7But look at the caption of the pic in the story...
He says "Hail to the king, baby" which is a Duke Nukem line- macweirdo42, on 05/07/2008, -2/+9Ah, but "Hail to the king, baby" was also a line from Army of Darkness, and as we all know, Doom was inspired partly by Army of Darkness
- therightclique, on 05/08/2008, -1/+3Doom was inspired by The Evil Dead/2. Army Of Darkness came out the same year as Doom.
- danconia, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3But same franchise...
- macweirdo42, on 05/07/2008, -2/+9Ah, but "Hail to the king, baby" was also a line from Army of Darkness, and as we all know, Doom was inspired partly by Army of Darkness

- unrealmp3, on 05/07/2008, -3/+16Wrong game buddy, it's not Duke Nukem.
- p4r4d0x, on 05/08/2008, -1/+5Epic fail.
- plizard, on 05/07/2008, -18/+297they should just redo doom 1 and 2 with updated graphics
- yikiad, on 05/07/2008, -30/+134that's called doom 3
- kingmanic, on 05/07/2008, -15/+13I agree. Dumb glut of monsters, level design focusing on making monsters pop up behind you, fear induced by poor lighting, demons, shotguns, and much more of the same. The only way they could make it closer to Doom1 + doom 2 is to duplicate every level. But it is very much a spiritual port of doom1 and 2.
- byronne, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2I wonder if that's been attempted. Don't see any ports or duplicates on L4Y or DoomWorld.

- davidjunit, on 05/07/2008, -13/+55I didn't even finish DOOM3, it just wasn't very fun. I really hope they come up with something interesting this time around.
- Skye16, on 05/07/2008, -10/+37I'm sorry to hear that, but it's probably the most enjoyable SP FPS I've played in years. Maybe playing it in the dark with copious amounts of alcohol is what made it so rad, but it scared the ***** out of me at more than a few parts.
I guess I can see where others wouldn't like it, but I loved it.- Phyltre, on 05/07/2008, -18/+4I never understood when the modern FPS went to a place where a horror element is almost necessary. Games like FEAR, Half Life--heck, even the Halo series with the Flood. Of course there are exceptions but generally, I don't go to an FPS to be scared--I go there for strategy.
- Charlotte_Web, on 05/07/2008, -2/+37Considering that Wolfenstein 3D and Doom were the original FPS games, the horror element was there from the start.
- bradleyland, on 05/07/2008, -1/+7Feel free to stick to CoD4, any Tom Clancy game, or the Battlefield series. How 'bout Fuel of War? There are plenty of titles that are relevant to your interests.
- antdude, on 05/08/2008, -3/+5Wolf3D was scary?
- Silentnite85, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6Duh, Who isn't scared by undead Nazi's!
- therightclique, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6"Wolf3D was scary?"
Guess you didn't play it the week it came out. - Tenoq, on 05/08/2008, -1/+2CoD4 was the first single-player FPS I've enjoyed in a long time. Single-player games for PC just aren't what they used to be. RPGs are still alright though... although they're a long time between drinks right now. :p
- culbeda, on 05/07/2008, -13/+5One of the most enjoyable? You must have been drunk. I'd rather run around Chronicles of Riddick collecting shivs than replay D3. (Actually CoR was very entertaining, minus the fetching tasks.)
- brundlefly76, on 05/07/2008, -5/+17Doom 3/Quake 4 proved that id was no longer a gaming company, it was a graphics engine company.
There was not one thing about those games that was original and interesting except the graphics.
Doom 4 is going to be yet another a id 'payday' game.- CeeJayDK, on 05/07/2008, -1/+8Quake 4 was made by Raven and to be fair iD seems to be trying something new with Rage , but I agree that Doom 4 sounds like it will be another iD game sold mostly for it engine and maybe the hope of good mods.
- Loonacy, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5Just to nitpick, it's not "iD", it's "id".
- antdude, on 05/08/2008, -1/+4id Software should just do game engines and let other companies buy their awesome engines. Ever noticed some games are better from other companies that use their engines?
- therightclique, on 05/08/2008, -1/+4True
- grumbel, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Actually the terminals with mouse interaction were pretty cool. Listening to audio messages and reading on the PDA was pretty nice as well. There was also nice use of physics and many other little details. Too bad that all that got overshadowed by repetitive monster hunter in the dark.
And speaking of graphics engine company, didn't Doom3 pretty much fail in that aspect, other then Doom3, Quake4 and Pray, what games are there based on the engine? - iamthearm, on 05/08/2008, -1/+0First off, love the name Brundlefly! I didn't even like Quake 3 to be honest.
- bakagaigin, on 05/07/2008, -3/+29so wrong! Doom 1 & 2 had so much more creative level design, with biiig open spaces, 2 things that doom 3 lacked.
- ElectricKetchup, on 05/07/2008, -2/+21In Doom 1&2, you actually had a mask on so you could survive outside for more than 30 seconds. That's why there were more outdoor/hell spaces ;)
Also, I loved the music in doom1+2 a lot better than doom3, and there was no flashlight *****, or slow paced action, or emo voice actors.- BoonTobias, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2nedm
- antdude, on 05/08/2008, -0/+9DOOM had co-op. Episode 1 rocked because of the space base theme.
- ElectricKetchup, on 05/07/2008, -2/+21In Doom 1&2, you actually had a mask on so you could survive outside for more than 30 seconds. That's why there were more outdoor/hell spaces ;)
- ElectricKetchup, on 05/07/2008, -2/+23The original doom was on a moon of mars, not mars itself.
- dullnation, on 05/07/2008, -0/+7Phobos if I remember right...?
- LeeSoong, on 05/07/2008, -3/+135To improve on DOOM 3's shadowy blackness - DOOM 4 will be an audio only game, and will completely shut off your monitor during game play.
You play by finding your way around via echo location of your own tormented screams.- humperdeath, on 05/07/2008, -3/+12I love it! Your comment is right on. Maybe Doom4 will be a text only game. Remember those?

DoomRL. - macweirdo42, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3Y'know, I seem to recall someone made a text adventure game of E1M1 of the original Doom. It was interesting, but there was an appalling lack of grues.

- BabyWookie, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Kinda, sorta like what you're talking about:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enemy_Zero
"The gameplay of E0 is unique. Enemies are not visible, and location is only possible through the use of sound, with notes of different pitch helping the player find the distance and direction of enemies. The system, although daring and unconventional, was extremely unforgiving, and the game was critically panned."

- DefaultGen, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4Someone never played Doom 3 (Or perhaps the first 2 Dooms, but I find that harder to digest)
- ninja0, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1Not really. Doom1 was on mars, doom2 was on earth (Doom2: Hell on earth). I would like to see the levels in doom 1 and 2 redone with the new engine. that would be cool
- kingmanic, on 05/07/2008, -15/+13I agree. Dumb glut of monsters, level design focusing on making monsters pop up behind you, fear induced by poor lighting, demons, shotguns, and much more of the same. http://www.moddb.com/mods/5275/doom-ii-for-doom-3 - beastzeus, on 05/07/2008, -5/+2umm no were talking about mechanics of gameplay here, not just graphics, the movements, speed, reaction etc.. of doom I and II is the best of any FPS ever. Now you take all that goodness and you give it a graphic make over.
You however are talking about taking a completely different engine and remaking old maps and guns calling it better graphics two majorly different things.

- Asianwaste, on 05/07/2008, -1/+35I hope instead of focusing on just detailed graphics (which was covered sufficiently since Doom 3's era) they should focus on an engine that can overwhelm the player with a ridiculous number of objects on screen. Really live up the old spirit of classic Doom with demons swarming you around every turn rather than a few hiding in the dark or teleporting behind you.
- yournamehere, on 05/07/2008, -0/+16Agreed, we don't need another Resident Evil: Doom
- IEatHamburgers, on 05/07/2008, -1/+15So slap the Doom 3 engine on Serious Sam?

- therightclique, on 05/08/2008, -3/+2I think you should go back and play Doom or Doom2, so you can see how often that doesn't really happen.
- mardraum, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4I think you should try being a man and playing on Ultra-Violence, or at least Hurt Me Plenty.

- CheekyBunky, on 05/07/2008, -6/+2I downright agree with this! Doom 3 was awesome, but went in a completely different direction to the originals. That said, you want Doom with better visuals, check out Serious Sam 1 + 2, now THATS a game!
- therightclique, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6you're joking, right?

Great engine.
- Melancholiatic, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Shame they've stopped developing. Well, it's been a while since the last release.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 05/07/2008, -2/+14Doom 3 was scarier -- but also more annoying. In the future, we cannot mount a flashlight on our gun?
I understand the reason for doing that -- but after the first few levels -- could we not depend on poor control and lighting for EVERY thrill? Shooting blanks in a dark room with something ugly -- is this a game or last call at the Whiskey Barn? Because that 3am lady is looking better than a Hell Knight at least.
Doom 2 had some good elements of strategy to try and get through hoards of monsters -- I'd like to see a bit of that in Doom 4. Perhaps some "blast the fish tank and throw an ice bomb" kind of strategies. I don't know -- look at Half Life 2. Steal all the better ideas out there and then add the scary Doom stuff that you do so well.
Just stop depending on trying to scare people with oozing walls and lighting for 40 hours. Other than the graphics -- Doom 3 was a dull game. - springboks, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4or embed Doom 1,2,3 inside Doom 4
- h4mx0r, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3Doom 3 relied too much on repetition. Sure, when Doom 3 first came out, it was freaky for the first twenty minutes. This game should have been more like a shorter tech demo, with a real quality game coming after that. I hope Doom 4 gives us something interesting. I had more fun with Quake 4 and Prey, and they both tossed around the horror element at points.
- iamthearm, on 05/08/2008, -0/+0I agree Plizard. Just update Doom 1 and 2. Doom 3 was nothing like Doom 1 and 2 and Doom 3 sucked bad. Didn't even finish it.

Maybe we can get the coveted; "I've seen this post before" or the "this is Lame -- total waste of time" comment that points to the sage use of time to point out that time is being wasted -- just in case you didn't feel that way yet.
And yes, ironically, this comment falls into that category as well. It was okay, so was Doom 3, but it was just... missing something that the older games had.
I dunno, maybe a sense of uniqueness or innovation? I can't put my finger on it.
Quake was revolutionary. So was Quake 3. Since then it's seemed... bleh.- Tyrghast, on 05/07/2008, -4/+4Enemy Territory made up for wolfensteins flaws. Some of the most fun in a multiplayer game I ever had was from enemy territory
- Droniac, on 05/07/2008, -2/+6Enemy Territory was the flawed offspring of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and certainly in no way better than it's predecessor.
RtCW was revolutionary, in multiplayer, it's singleplayer was admittedly mediocre, although less so than Doom 3's. - nation161, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Both were amazingly fun and addictive, but I actually found Enemy Territory's multiplayer an upgrade. Plus I loved the single player RtCW... Helga von Bulow and her one-eyed (I think?) crazy ass.

- LJRod82, on 05/07/2008, -2/+15Definitely. I'd rather see an RTCW sequel as well. RTCW was more addictive and fun gameplay-wise than Doom 3. Doom 3 is the only game I know that made walking around in a dark environment filled with scary creatures boring and tiresome. That may or may not take some skill as a game developer to pull off, but when Doom 1 and Doom 2 still reside on my hard drive long after the great uninstallation of Doom 3 you know something wasn't done right.

- solid12345, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1The thing about Duke Nukem is you were really just playing a Roddy Piper in "They Live" imitator yet you still laughed at the same lines you've heard before.

- BlastedLands, on 05/07/2008, -15/+29So sick of the flashlight comment...the switching enhanced the survival horror "feel". Not everything is about gaming efficiency you lame nerd. Having to toggle between flashlight and gun created tense moments where you had to fumble for the light..Just like in a real horror movie. Also if you messed up, you'd be in darkness till you got your flashlight out...and that’s good for the scary factor...The game would have been way less scary if the guns had flashlights on them or do you want another boring ass predictable HL2. I think you do.
- humperdeath, on 05/07/2008, -8/+3Well, I only had 2 hands, and trying to map 27 keys with 10 fingers just was too much.
How about mouse for direction and fire, 4 keys to move, a couple more for jump, run and crouch. Thats it - Speed, on 05/07/2008, -3/+6"Having to toggle between flashlight and gun created tense moments where you had to fumble for the light..Just like in a real horror movie"
And everytime I watch those movies I wonder why:
1. if it's a handgun: you cant have the gun in one hand and flashlight in the other
2. if its a military rifle: it doesn't have a built in flashlight.
You don't want a game to be like a horror movie since we're the group of people wondering why every single movie has the people making the same mistakes.- waszanz, on 05/08/2008, -2/+0But common sense would have had me find some rope, string, tape, etc to stick the flash light to the weapon, now they could have had a battery meter(cant remember if there was one) to challenge you to use it wisely.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 05/07/2008, -0/+9It was cool for the first few hours and after that it was extremely annoying. The Flashlight comment is pertinent because this is basically all OPINION.
In your opinion, you liked the creepy darkness. In my opinion -- it was great for a short time and detracted from the game the longer it continued.
Please, make your vote count!- therightclique, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1it only happened a few times in the whole game. calm down.
- sh4rkb1t3, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4The flashlight in doom was half the fun... it added some stratagy and planning to the game. Its not hard to assign the flashlight key to your right mouse button which by default, is JUMP, LOL.

- Speed, on 05/07/2008, -1/+15There was nothing wrong with that flash- damn it. Hold on, gotta charge the batteries again....
- Seizure, on 05/07/2008, -1/+5Well, as I recall it did decide to scale itself linearly based off of the location of its center, instead of how far away any particular piece was at a given time. Because of that, when you look around a corner, the light that shines on a distant wall forms a portion of a circle with an identical radius to the one projected on the corner that you're standing right in front of. That bothered me.
...
I'm being too picky again, aren't I?
PS, I find your statement kind of funny in an ironic sort of way. The doom flashlight was built specifically because the ID guys saw what Half-Life 2 was doing, and decided they needed to include something like it.- tacomafia, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2when it covered more area that way it was also less bright, like real flashlights.

- D14BL0, on 05/07/2008, -4/+13You're kidding, right? When Doom 3 came out, only top of the line gaming machines could run the game at all. If you had a standard gaming machine, you had no chance, even at low quality.
- K31TH3R, on 05/07/2008, -1/+7an ATI Radeon 9600 pro could run doom 3 on medium settings @ 1024x768. So could an nVidia GeForce 5600 Ultra. Those video cards were not top of the line by any means.
- phenom2k7, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5I remember playing D3 on a 9700 pro. Yes it was playable but it was a crap experience. The upgrade was needed for me personally.
- Tollofsen, on 05/07/2008, -1/+3I played it rather nicely on my geForce 4 TI something back then running on GNU/Linux. Granted I had overklocked the crap out of it and it was on low settings. But it worked quite well.
- volacide, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Conversely you can run a Radeon 9800 with Crysis at low settings so why don't these bitches stop complaining about Crysis?
- richIsBored, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1I played through the game on low quality with a Geforce 3 and was very close to averaging 30 FPS with occasional dips.

- phenom2k7, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4Hmm not for me. When Quake 3 came out I needed a new PC. Same with RTCW and Doom 3. For me the hardware market is always behind when id release a game. Always id software as well. That's simply because they are imo one of the best game developers out there, always pushing the boundaries. Many games have been made on their engine. Call of duty, solider of fortune come to mind. The Q3 engine was amazing at the time.
- ChildeRoland420, on 05/07/2008, -2/+1I'd define the best developer as the one that can make a game that can run on most hardware before I say that they are good because only a few people can play.
- Tollofsen, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0And that would be? Well I guess S2 Games. It sure isn't some Direct3D coding monkeys.
- ChildeRoland420, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1Valve tends to do a good job making games that run on a wide range of hardware.

- sh4rkb1t3, on 05/07/2008, -2/+4The flashlight was great, it really added an element of stratagy and planning to the game. Playing a mod of the game where your flashlight is strapped to your gun really saps the fun out of the game. I hate to sound cliché, but in this case it is really true: only people who sucked at the game hated the flashlight.
- tacomafia, on 05/07/2008, -1/+3yeah if people duck tape flash lights to their guns they might as well turn on nightvision because they are too pussy to play the game it's meant to be played

- mlrigsby, on 05/07/2008, -11/+41I thought DOOM3 was quite underrated. Good to hear the franchise is still going.
- culbeda, on 05/07/2008, -14/+28"Underrated"? Are you talking about the same game? The one with infamous flashlight || weapon system? The game where walls open up to reveal a monster behind you ala 1992? The one with the same tired, pentagram-filled storyline? That game was so boring I just threw it into God mode half way in to finish it. Sure it was dark and creepy, but I like my games to have a little something I call "entertainment value".
- kenok, on 05/07/2008, -10/+5You're just weak.
- jhalar, on 05/07/2008, -5/+4I too turned on God mode to finsh it , but it was because after six hours the game lost its own spirit and become boring and low ammo fest til the end.
- mlrigsby, on 05/07/2008, -1/+13 I liked the old-school gameplay elements (though I personally think the original DOOM is more fun than most modern FPS's). And I just don't get people who complain about the story. The story in DOOM (and DOOM3) is one of the best story's of all time in videogames: demons are lose on Mars, you are the only survivor, kick some ass. What more motivation could you possibly ask for?
All that being said, the real reason I loved DOOM3 was the scare-factor of it. DOOM3 is the only game I can remember that actually gave me nightmares; I literally had trouble sleeping for the two weeks I was playing the game.- gcauthon, on 05/07/2008, -3/+2Doom 3 was the most overrated disappointment I've ever seen. It didn't have even a fraction of the old-school gameplay elements that made Doom 1 and 2 such a success. Doom 1 was a run-and-gun game. You can't run-and-gun very well if your stamina meter empties out every time you run ten feet. No hidden areas, no secrets levels, horrid MP levels. This game had nothing good from the so called old-school genre.
- illt, on 05/08/2008, -3/+4valve fanboys were too busy rubbing one out over halflife2 to even care to notice its flaws....took me 2 weeks to get through that ***** speedboat area, because everytime i loaded up i'd get so ***** tired of it and quit.
doom 3 was highly underrated. scare factor was ***** great. i had a few good jumps, and the nostalgic factor kept me playing. My heart would race everytime i saw an Arch-vile.
i guess cheap thrills and throwbacks to the roots are "enterntainment value" in my mind
- bakagaigin, on 05/07/2008, -1/+12Nobody ever wanted a story out of tetris....
- Worktruck, on 05/07/2008, -2/+3Yeah, but then again no one was ever specifically hired to help write or script a story for tetris unlike Doom 3, which they made mention server times before the release that they brought in a scifi writer Matthew J. Costello. Now granted I've never read his work nor did the lack of story really bother me in Doom 3. It was however very boring and tedious.
- twiztidsinz, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Arkanoid had a story!!!!!
- tacomafia, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1oh *****. havent you played any tetris clones that tried to incorporate a story into it? I remember back in the day playing a tetris-like game with kirby facing opponents as a story. *****.

- yohnstoppable, on 05/07/2008, -2/+4I thought the flashlight thing added to the creepiness. If you could see, you were vulnerable as *****. if you couldn't, then you were vulnerable as ***** cause you couldn't see. Was nice
- Schmich, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1I loved Doom 3. One of those games that I ordered myself to finish :P
- linksus, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1I have to agree, Doom3 was a great game.
Id will probably always have some form of doom based game. Thats what brought them the main amount of cash and to where they are now. ( Apart from the quake series ) Q4 was a little letdown.
- anyone4apint, on 05/07/2008, -3/+20Dark, so very very dark...
- SolidSnake24, on 05/07/2008, -13/+32When i first played Doom 3 i was shell-shocked! The creepy atmosphere, with dark locations and the use of a dim flashlight worked to perfection. I can't wait for Doom 4 to be released, though i doubt my PC would be able to run it

You left out the part where it will require a $200 video card in order to display that 100% black screen.- EricAnderton, on 05/07/2008, -0/+17But you have to ask yourself: can you get anymore black than that? Well, you can't. There's none more black.
- Speed, on 05/07/2008, -3/+3Now now now, we both know that's not true. The dual core GeForce 9800 is $600, not $200.

- bevans, on 05/07/2008, -3/+12So a flashlight, a Priest and a Rabbi walk into a bar....
- Jsmuli2, on 05/07/2008, -15/+59I loved the flashlight idea because it made the game more intense.
- hybridcreation, on 05/07/2008, -8/+28Why don't more people understand this? You come around a corner in the pitch black, having no idea what's in front of you. Do you keep your gun out or switch to the flashlight to see what's ahead? Having to go through that thought-process every minute was nerve-wracking.
Borderline genius gameplay.- BlastedLands, on 05/07/2008, -3/+8well said!
- gcauthon, on 05/07/2008, -3/+3If a clever gameplay idea has to be explained to everyone then it isn't very clever. Anyway, id has already admitted that the flashlight/gun switching was not added to improve the scary atmosphere. It was to cover up performance limitations related to their bloated universal lighting engine. Apparently, if they had given you the option to leave your flashlight on while fighting enemies then it would have melted your video card.
- therightclique, on 05/08/2008, -3/+3It only has to be explained to those that aren't clever enough to understand it in the first place. Also, I'd love to see the source on your claim that id has admitted it was due to hardware limitations.
- hybridcreation, on 05/08/2008, -3/+1"If a clever gameplay idea has to be explained to everyone then it isn't very clever."
It's not John's fault you're dense. ;-)

- ectally, on 05/07/2008, -26/+32You know Doom 3 really wasn't all that much fun. The story wasn't compelling, there was little ingenuity in the weapons/gameplay systems, and while technically solid, the visuals didn't really engage me, they lacked vibrance (everything was dark/washed out). Next gen 3D technology is important sure... but it's only a portion of what it takes to make a compelling game.
So why am I excited about Doom 4?- spartan018, on 05/07/2008, -7/+17because 1) its an id game, and 2) ITS ***** DOOM, DUDE!

- thinsoldier, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2compared to halflife 1
- ripple123, on 05/07/2008, -2/+12The one trick doom 3 had up its sleeve, apart from the nice graphics engine, was things jumping out at you and getting really close really quickly, forcing you into close quarters combat. You can only have the game go "BOO!" at you so many times before it becomes hackneyed and tedious.
- Seizure, on 05/07/2008, -2/+3Dugg for the use of the word "hackneyed."
- therightclique, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3You dugg someone for using an accepted, common term?

- X9001, on 05/07/2008, -2/+1You mean spawning an enemy in a closet to your left and having it attack you is somehow innovation?
- thinsoldier, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3and just like in quake 1, some of the "monster closets" in doom 3 were clearly visible (texture seam) if you tried to play it on average hardware.

- The_Dude, on 05/07/2008, -3/+3Sounds like your video card/monitor sucked.
- kirado4, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2yeah why are you so excited??
- dijital, on 05/07/2008, -1/+4I completely agree. When it first came out, it was really exalted because of the graphics at the time - arguably, the first of the 'next-gen'. I remember being really excited and telling people about how 'there isn't a video card in existence that you can put the settings on ultra!' Which, at that time, was true. But recently, I bought a 8800GT and decided to crank up the settings and give D3 another run - with everything turned up, and sure, it looked pretty good, but the gameplay SUCKED! It was trite and boring - at least till you get to the hellhole level. ID really dropped the ball, but I still give em props for basically creating the genre.
- thinsoldier, on 05/07/2008, -2/+1I still give Run DMC props for mixing rock and rap but who they hell still buys run dmc albums these days?

- illt, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1yeah, but id always aces it. The other FPS's out on the market don't really understand tight and responsive gameplay. Doom takes it's story and origins tounge in cheek. hell look at quake 3, it didn't even have a single player.
Why do you tihnk people still play quake world, quake 2, and quake 3 religiously?- lacronicus, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Yep, id aced Quake 4 so well, you forgot to mention it.

- sp4rob, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3But the original Doom was the first Marine in outer space fighting monsters/demons
- danixdefcon5, on 05/08/2008, -2/+0id CREATED the genre. In fact, id basically did the first FPS shooter with Wolfenstein 3-D, but Doom was the first one with lighting and such. And even if there were not much textures to monkey around, at least the designs for the levels didn't look like someone copy-pasted their way through ... like say .. Halo? Just check out Doom3, even with ¨the flashlight problem¨ it still plays better than the Halo1 game, even without vehicles!
Ok the first FPS I know was "Midi Maze" but that was basically shooting Faceballs, and didn't go on to live in the PC. Sad, as it was the first truly multiplayer game, ages before Doom came...
- dhVyse, on 05/07/2008, -12/+7Dugg for witty flashlight comment. God that was aweful. Doom 3 is the only game that would of been 100 times better if they replaced one of the guns with some duck tape.
- ilves7, on 05/07/2008, -2/+7they should've made it so you have to tape it onto one gun at a time and if you run out of ammo you have to re-tape it to a different gun
- Klarth, on 05/07/2008, -2/+5would _have_
- Bologner, on 05/07/2008, -0/+7By downloading one of the many available flashlight mods, It instantly made the game non-scary.
- RealmDown, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2I'd prefer the chainsaw, but if you want to duct tape the monsters, I'm sure they will hold still for you. :-D
- Kennerk, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2next time you comment, press the "Check Spelling" button, for my sake?
- xlneoMAXlx, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1awful* 'would have'* duct*
- daizaru, on 05/07/2008, -5/+4I hope they go back to the crazy shooter and stop trying to scare you and fail. Then again the game was pretty dark so you wouldn't notice a lot of the graphics... Anyways looking forward to it but I hope it's not just a sequel to #3.
- breezytrees, on 05/07/2008, -7/+9kk here's my design for doom 4 flashlight: You push "F," and a flashlight lights up the unnaturally dark room where you are pointing, but it runs out of batteries so it can only shine for half a minute or so. You then have to stand for another thirty seconds or so to let your battery recharge so you can continue the level because you can't see anything without the flashlight.
- giid, on 05/07/2008, -1/+17Yes, realistic flashlights that the battery only lasts for only 30 seconds and that charge automagically. That's what we want.
- BuddyDoQ, on 05/07/2008, -4/+7Hey, worked for Half-Life!

- BlastedLands, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3kk, no
- tacomafia, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2no because people would stand around and not do anything until their flashlight was charged fully.
the flashlight is there to convey a scare because you have to be voulnerable to spot your enemies initially. brilliant idea, really. the only ones who hate it are pussies who are scared to death. the same people get mods with the flashlight duct taped to the gun.- waszanz, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1I didnt hate it nor was I scared by it, but as a soldier I find the fact that this marine is intelligent enough to figure out how to use otherworldly items but cannot afix a flashlight to his freakin weapon totaly mind blowing. They could have easily made the light go out at inopportune times or something like that.
- giid, on 05/07/2008, -1/+17Yes, realistic flashlights that the battery only lasts for only 30 seconds and that charge automagically. That's what we want.

- ensta2, on 05/07/2008, -0/+6Wow this looks a lot harder than Doom 3. On top of that, the graphics are going to kill my laptop, I don't think I am ready for Doom 4
- twiztidsinz, on 05/07/2008, -0/+14Found the game music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZ0xeGvPfTs&feature ...
( I promise that this is -not- a rick roll )- DemDude, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Well, it IS kinda repetitive. Fits the gameplay, though =)

- postalblowfish7, on 05/07/2008, -1/+13i hope they load the levels with enemies and make it more of a gore fest rather than the survival-horror of DOOM3. not that that game wasn't amazing (and genuinely frightening), but i'd like to see splattered particles from dozens of enemies at the same time - ala 'ultra violent' difficulty in DOOM II.
it's going to be hard to top the end boss of DOOM3 - maybe put us in a room with 2 of em... (a BIG room hehe)- ripple123, on 05/07/2008, -0/+9Yeah dammit. I want some mowing down the endless demon hordes of hell action. None of this pansy ass 3 enemies at a time *****. I want demon corpses piled high, and me blasting away at freakish abberations from the top of the pile. A bit like the title art for the original doom.
- failedpimp, on 05/07/2008, -24/+4Doom 4... trying to latch onto the success of GTA 4

- contradictator, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Neither of you should be happy, you should be brooding and brutal.
Side note, awesome title for a song? BLOODTROCUTED.

- hasslinthehoff, on 05/07/2008, -3/+24As long as it doesn't star The Rock, then I'm game...
- AppleGeorge, on 05/07/2008, -8/+2Doom 3 didn't either.. so you're either a jackass who only watches movies based on games, or you're just a complete ***** dumbass.

- DubiousDrewski, on 05/08/2008, -1/+0Woah, I thought you were trying for some sort of weird spoonerism; "As long as it doesn't Star the Rock, I'm Game" == "As long as it's not done by RockStar Games". What's wrong with my head?
- AppleGeorge, on 05/07/2008, -8/+2Doom 3 didn't either.. so you're either a jackass who only watches movies based on games, or you're just a complete ***** dumbass.

Today : USELESS.. - jaycee234jar, on 05/07/2008, -4/+4the blackness sets the mood, or do you like it with the light on?
- irvin666, on 05/07/2008, -1/+4I'm assuming that doom 4 will be the remake of Doom 2?
Will be kewl to see earthlings being devoured by demons and skyscrapers on fire and whatnot.- nation161, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Kewl? Seriously?
- dawnraid101, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1you must be unkewl.

- Kenzan, on 05/07/2008, -1/+49They need to bring back the stuff that made Doom 1 fun.
HORDES of enemies onscreen at once.
Oh..and could you NOT make it pitch black all the time?
Fighting in the dark is not fun. It's annoying.- ninja0, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Yeah agreed. Hordes of enemies and mowing them down with the shotgun or rocket launcher or something. So much fun. Doom3 was a complete 180 from doom 1 and 2
- Hobolord, on 05/07/2008, -5/+12I want my $50 back.
- sunnydayz, on 05/07/2008, -0/+11That's how i feel about assassins creed, never buy until you have tried the torrent.
- banshee9x, on 05/07/2008, -0/+6agreed, i found that game got annoying after about an hour or so
- BedPost, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2I would've been satisfied if they had classified it as an action game rather than a stealth game.
Call a fish a fish, y'know?
