- rwallen, on 10/11/2007, -4/+32I don't know what the average person on digg thinks about Steam but this has me pretty excited. I buy games on Steam I normally wouldn't buy, it's an easy way to shop and I love that I don't have to save disks or boxes.
I never played Devil May Cry so if it does come to Steam I'll give it a go. - djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -1/+27In the article, it mentions Super Puzzle Fighter II HD Remix. If I'm not mistaken, this was previously only announced for Xbox 360 and PS3.
Does this mean the PC will get a port of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix as well? - BugMeNot2, on 10/11/2007, -4/+28Steam is awesome. It's the best, easiest, and fastest way to buy games and play games, in my opinion. Also, on some games Steam lets you pre-load most of the game, letting you play the moment the game is released.
- v0yeur, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20considering the Lost Planet DX10 beta is already on Steam, this isn't terribly surprising. The more access the better - I just wish Steam's offline mode was more intuitive
- venir, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18Steam sucked when it first launched but after about 6 months to a year or so afterward it has become a great app. I personally like it a lot now that they have worked out most of the kinks.
- PueSi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16"Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix"
That's the most ridiculous name ever. - askjosh, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17I used to be totally against steam when it first came out, but that was because back then i had maybe $20 a week to spend on stuff so me an the rest of my friends would trade games. But now I love steam and I dont mind paying for a game that I enjoy. Steam is 100 times better than what it used to be and when I get ready to build my new gaming system next month it will make installing 90% of my games a breeze because all i will have to do is log into steam and it will start installing all of my games onto the new system.
And like everyone else has said I dont have to hunt down CD's or DVD's and I dont have to have a disc in my DVD drive all the time to play a game. I just wish oblivion would come to steam so i could add my cd-key for oblivion and have it linked to steam. - Satanael, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12The Gods frown upon you.
- r1y23, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15I love steam, its a great way for third party and mainstream devs to get their work out
- wounded625, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Steam...Valve...Steam comes can come out of valves.
I didn't know that it was hard to figure out how they got the name. - Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12www.steampowered.com/
- HolyChimp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I also used to be against steam, particularly since I was still on dial up when Half-Life 2 launched, and my friend managed to download a cracked version and play it before steam was done with it's decryption stuff for me. Since I got broadband (how did I live without it?) I've grown to love steam, especially since some of my favourite games (Uplink and Darwinia) now seem to be getting the praise they deserve, Good things.
- hotsake, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7@Phyltre,
Steam is only using about 12 MB of RAM sitting in my taskbar. The app doesn't seem to hog my memory. I set the heapsize for Valve games quite high and have never noticed a problem, but since I'm about to go headshot some noobs in CS anyway, I'll check Task Manager when I'm done. Firefox hogs way more resources than I've ever noticed Steam use (when not actively playing a game). - Snarfy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Steam is a content delivery system. Instead of CDs/DVDs, you just download your games and shop at an online store. It's similar in concept to iTunes, but for games instead of music.
- JimXugle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6@r1y23
a perfect example is Garry's Mod. - hotsake, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Saying "Steam sucks" and then backing that statement up with a dumb lolcats image isn't very effective.
I think you just don't know how to forward ports or something incredibly easy like that; hence, Steam would suck for you. I think it's a great model for content delivery. Yeah, Steam was crappy in its infancy; however, they've worked out a lot of the problems. I even run it under Wine when I'm booted into Ubuntu. - Asianwaste, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7You've got a better name for a game that has been tweaked, changed, and survived over the course of 15 years?
- askjosh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4speaking of old games I would love to see bullfrog releasing alot of their old games from the 90's on steam.
- kalrhael, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Awesome, I wish there were more old games on steam, you know games you wouldn't find in the market since they're out of print, and charge for like 5$ for them. I would certainly buy a few games I missed out on.
- TiMMY8765, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4well bullfrog got bought by ea, so that's probably not gonna happen
- pushmouse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@hotsake
I did moved the .gfc files to a new machine once a long time ago. So it does work. However, on my last rebuild i just let Steam do its thing and download all the content again. If you had a service provider with monthly caps I could see how that could be useful. - Asianwaste, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Well there is EAlink... EA's sad attempt at making a steam clone.
- lacronicus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3i hope that, with the partnership between EA and valve, EA starts to sell games over steam. such a giant, though not particularly great by itself, would surely bring followers. id rather go onto steam than anywhere else, including a retail store. itd be even better if every game on steam got a demo.
- HolyChimp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Damn, had my hopes up for a second, until I was reminded of the EA ownership. Bullfrog made some kickass games, and I managed to get most of them, but there are a few I still need to complete my set.
- ZapWizard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I agree.
I used to hate Steam, but I do have to say that I am liking it more and more. I just built a new gaming rig and after all the drivers were install it was only 30 minutes before my system was loaded with every Steam game I own, no digging up CDs, finding CD keys, etc...
I have bought two games off the system just this month, that are not from valve. - puzzlesource, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3steam is great...but has anyone tried the capcom PC ports? it''s one of the worst EVER! I bought DMC3 and RE4 for PC and it's basically just a straight port with no optimization whatsoever for the PC; bad control scheme, awkward camera angles, you absolutely need a gamepad for DMC3, horrible graphics even on high end systems. Steam needs to institute quality control or else it's just going to make all these console game makers even richer offa horrible PC ports
- Boor, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6Did anyone else accidentally read this as "Capcom plans to sue Steam"
- Sutanreyu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It's been announced through Steam for the PC since the beginning. I'd also would have figured that Lost Planet would be delivered through Steam because they demo was distributed the same way.
All they need to do now is give us RE4 for the PC... Only not the crappy Ubisoft port. - pronouncable, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Holy crap.
- bunnytrigger, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I wish SNK would deliver games thru steam. Just imagine, playing KOF against people all over the world.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"The updates only take seconds anyway. "
Seconds? How fast is your internet connection? - HolyChimp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@pmichaelson:
I wouldn't say forever. If Steam/Valve go under then all your games go bye-bye. Of course this is the same argument with buying anything with DRM, be it from iTunes, Xbox Live or Steam, and I've never had a DRM protected file become useless because of the company going bust yet.
Doesn't mean DRM is perfect, but I think everyone can agree something is needed to stop anyone downloading the games, and if it isn't a CD Key/CD in the drive combo, it's a step in the right direction :D - lacronicus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3the day valve goes under is the day people stop liking half life 2 and its derivatives, ie never. people love counter strike, people love team fortress, people love half life, people love valve, and these are the type of people that would pay to make sure they dont go under. not all are that way, but id sure pay money to make sure they keep producing games.
- ddotccDPU, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Steam is a great platform for gaming. It provides webcontent for immediate download on your desktop and its also 100% secure unless some idiot is naive enough to actually give a steam rep their account and password. NEVER DO IT. steam reps never ask for that stuff, just so you know. But this is a big big win for the guys at Steam because as most people know, capcom is a powerhouse for oldschool japanese games. Mayb they will get rights to SNK too? capcom vs snk or KoF anyone?
- hotsake, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@askjosh,
Can't you back up your .gcf's and transfer them to the new system? I've never backed up the files themselves, but if you can transfer them to a new system while using the same Steam login credentials, that would save you from having to download the games again. - crapbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2now they only need to release native binaries for mac and linux.
- spect3r, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Steam rocks, the idea of CD/DVD free gaming is really appealing; and I like how some Dev's who distribute through steam also sometimes send the box/art to you in the mail.
The best thing about Steam, imo, is the ability to update games. It's also very handy when you do a drive format - no scrambling around for discs :D.
I'd hope one day steam goes beyond gaming, and maybe goes into software..... - Phyltre, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Can anyone vouch as to whether it has gotten less resource-hungry in the last year? I seem to remember it being a bit of a resource hog on my last PC.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Capcom on PC would be greaaaaaaat Just please come up with a fighter game more than Puzzle Fighter !!
Wheres a STREET FIGHTER GAME ?
God i wish PC would have Boxing or Wrestling or Fighting games !! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I just want my damn Steel-battalion LOC 2 xbox 360 game and controller.
- xSEED, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1aren't there roms?
- YKKonMyZipper, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2They are making a new Super Puzzle Fighter game... ***** awesome
(dose not keep up on game news) - TheTjalian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Fantastic news! Maybe RE 5 will also come to Steam? I mean, they're porting it to the XBOX 360 so a PC conversion shouldn't be that hard.
It's great news for Steam and it'll help Capcom a lot too. Valve are a very big name in the PC Gaming Scene, their publisher name will help Capcom drive more sales which, in turn, should hopefully make Capcom put more effort into their ports. - SevanElevan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I think Capcom should just stick with using electricity.
Steam is sooooo industrial revolution. - Sutanreyu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Devil May Cry 3 for the PC was a horrible port... It just sucked. I hope that since they're releasing it on Steam, it'll be a bit tweaked to look+play like it's supposed to. DMC is my favorite series on the PS2, (next to MGS and maybe ZOE... Still very close!).
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Now if only they would put a mac wrapper on it.
Sucks having to use crossover to use steam.... and its a good 10-20fps slower! - autocrawler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"steam is great...but has anyone tried the capcom PC ports?"
Well, as ports go, at least the demo of Lost Planet seems to be pretty fine. It controls wonderfully with Kb/M, every tiny setting is tweakable, and it generally seems to run well. So, maybe, Capcom is finally starting to take porting seriously. - inactive, on 04/28/2009, -0/+1well darn
- Coy0te, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Here's hoping they bring Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix to Steam too ( I hope it isn't as hard as the original turbo either...)
