- inactive, on 05/05/2009, -7/+84holding back on the ram and HDD was a boneheaded move just for the sake of keeping the price below 500. scrub an extra 50 and get 4 gig and 500gig HDD.
- arizona01, on 05/05/2009, -2/+71You should write an article about building a $550 PC.
- adeelarshad82, on 05/05/2009, -7/+58everyone's a critique. Had this been a $1000 pc people would have pointed out that it's too expensive and you can cut back on certain things.
Had this been a $100 pc people would have said that it should have certain things even if it drives up the price a little.
There is no such thing as a perfect PC because everyone likes to setup their system to their liking.
so why don't you stop criticizing, take this as a bench mark and do whatever the ***** you want to do with it. - catalysis, on 05/05/2009, -1/+43Clearly the people talking about the Xbox 360 don't understand why people game on the PC. We don't care if it's cheaper or if everyone gets the same framerate all the time. We like PC games, the controls, the versatility, and the freedom of software and hardware choice. Consoles are good for dorm rooms or for kids. PC gaming will never die.
- imomo, on 05/05/2009, -2/+39technically..its $400 ...who pays for operating system?
- ghatid, on 05/05/2009, -1/+35I'm impressed they included windows in that 500$ build
- Droniac, on 05/05/2009, -2/+35Yes, this one can run Crysis :)
With settings on high and a decent resolution (1680x1050) that is. - Karstark, on 05/05/2009, -5/+31But can it run Crysis?
- smrekar, on 05/05/2009, -1/+26critic*
- booboochichi, on 05/05/2009, -1/+26You can steal the computer too. Get everything for nothing
- junkfoodjoe, on 05/05/2009, -0/+24This needs to be dugg so that everyone who is paying upwards of a thousand dollars on a gaming rig can see it.
Personally though, my sweet spot is around $800. That includes a Phenom II, HD 4850, and a 28 inch monitor. (protip: buy using a TigerDirect / Newegg combo) Crysis on High DX10.1 - Yarkz, on 05/05/2009, -1/+24But that would mean going outside...
- ToastPop, on 05/05/2009, -1/+24This may be the only time that I will ever see that meme used accurately.
- timishue, on 05/05/2009, -3/+23Comparing pirating software with stealing a computer is ridiculous. Let me know when you figure out how to Copy and Paste your Rig, I'll wait.
- adeelarshad82, on 05/05/2009, -1/+21lol agreed and then someone will point out something that should be changed by adding another $50 and then someone should write one for $600 gaming pc.
- subxero37, on 05/05/2009, -4/+22You don't even need to buy it. Just write down the XP CD key on the sticker, or take a picture of it. Then leave.
- timishue, on 05/05/2009, -1/+19I particularly like the building of the machine, mods, and customization. Love the feeling I get from the first boot from a ground up build. I suppose face plates and stickers will suffice for some console owners but there's much more to PC Gaming than gaming... if that makes any sense.
- z00k, on 05/05/2009, -1/+17I would tell you but I don't think you would understand what I would be trying to say.
- TomGfromCanada, on 05/05/2009, -3/+19my video card cost 500$
- CrazySpaniard, on 05/05/2009, -3/+19Well see there is this thing called money.
Now everybody does not have quite an abundance of it, and would like to spend it on things that are more necessary for living a proper life eg. food, shelter, clothing
but some of these people would also enjoy some entertainment in their life therefore they have the desire to play some computer games, so they must find a good balance between price and ability to play computer games so that they may be able to continue living thier life the way they have been, and also so that they may play some computer games to entertain themselves.
Therefore they will try and gather up a list of cheap/old computer parts to build the PC that is suitable for thier needs, the computer listed here being a good example of that. - smrekar, on 05/05/2009, -3/+18my video card costs 501$
- Antialias, on 05/05/2009, -1/+16Thanks for making the rest of the cards cheaper for us. They make all their money on those high end cards and have much smaller margins on the mid-low range cards. We're getting a much better bang/buck ratio buying the best cards from 6 months ago.
- ParticleMan420, on 05/05/2009, -2/+16what's it worth now?
how about in 6 months? - Zera, on 05/05/2009, -8/+22That's really a poor list of hardware. Another $100 and you could double almost every spec in that system. 4GB Ram is $35, 500 GB hard drives only cost $35 more than the 160GB listed, Quad Core is possible for not much more as well.
Don't skimp on your hardware. When you can double the capacity for LESS than double the price, you do it. Buying old ***** is just stupid. - smrekar, on 05/05/2009, -1/+14you can get it a garage sales for cheap, just buy a crap pc at a yard sale and use the xp license from that.
- Yarkz, on 05/05/2009, -0/+12So why couldn't you use it for anything else?

PCs offer many things a console can't such as mods, superior multiplayer(such as clan support, and more players per game) and mouse and k/b.
As I have said before in this article, each has their own advantages, and I'm glad you can see consoles have their place, and PCs have theirs. - xexx, on 05/06/2009, -0/+11I prefer piracy.
- BugMeNot2, on 05/06/2009, -1/+11By not buy Windows he means pirate it.
- StigNordas, on 05/05/2009, -2/+12How is it that everything is getting so cheap, yet top-end processors stay high? I realize all the r&d that must go into them, but still, they don't seem to follow the same path as RAM/DISK/Motherboards, etc.
- Yarkz, on 05/05/2009, -0/+10The thing about new releases on the consoles, graphics improve for the first 6 months of the consoles release, and the rest of it's life graphics will just barely improve. With computers, graphics improve nearly nonstop, so you may not be able to max out a game, but it will looks just as good as anything it could run currently. Also you obviously have a computer, how much did it cost? If you combine the cost of the Xbox and a computer then it will show how it is worth it to be a PC gamer, I made the change and everything has been much easier. Also when the new xbox comes out, guess what you have too buy an entirely new system, for a computer you can simply throw in a new graphics card maybe change the processor out for 1/4 the cost of the new console and should be fine to run new games fine.
- Evilblobs, on 05/05/2009, -0/+10Yes they do.
They moved slow for a while because AMD was sucking. Same thing happened with GPUs when ATI was sucking.
However with AMD excellent video cards, those prices have dropped significantly, and hopefully with the relatively competitive mainstream-level CPUs, they should start dropping too. - thetweek, on 05/06/2009, -0/+10why is this getting dugg down? i noticed the same thing... like wtf 20% of the price of the pc is cause if vista, my hate for vista aside getting an old copy of xp and using the money saved on parts would make a sizable difference
- Zetsubou, on 05/05/2009, -1/+101440x900
- inactive, on 05/05/2009, -0/+9How does that change anything?
- PizzaEagle, on 05/05/2009, -2/+11over 9000
- DeadBabyFloat, on 05/05/2009, -0/+9whatever. sounds like you just dont really like gaming.
- shadowspawn, on 05/05/2009, -0/+9Um. Shipping?
- Yarkz, on 05/05/2009, -11/+20Building a 400 dollar gaming computer, skip Vista go Linux, no wait, ***** it just pirate windows.
- AReallyGoodName, on 05/06/2009, -0/+9I really don't get why you're being dugg down so much.
$97 of this budget PC was in the Operating System. Windows licenses are transferrable from from your old PC to your new one. You don't need to pay that $97. - CrazySpaniard, on 05/05/2009, -0/+9I cant even understand how that is possible
I was playing half life 2 with my piece of ***** >500 dollar prebuilt - EvanGH, on 05/05/2009, -0/+9Didn't Maximum PC already publish this feature last month? And with a much better layout?

Are you telling us to digg down DeathfireD's comment or your own comment?
/me is confused. - 0xbaadf00d, on 05/05/2009, -0/+9It's just amazing how cheap good video cards have become in the last couple years. When the 8800gt 512 came out it cost close to $300, and was considered the best price/performance. Now you can get great cards like this and the GTS 250 for $100.
- Tenareth, on 05/06/2009, -1/+9Why Quad Core? Go faster dual-core, you'll be happier if you are gaming.
- danwallace, on 05/06/2009, -0/+8Anyone who plays L4D on the 360 when they have the option to play it on a PC is a tool in my books.
- DeathfireD, on 05/06/2009, -0/+8Because these people like spending money I guess. Either that are they really really really want DX10 support lol.
- greevar, on 05/06/2009, -1/+9So you can use a PC without a monitor now?
