The funniest line I've read all day. - Heyseuss, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1It's how you finish. If you get punched with a big enough hit that makes you fall, but you are still awake enough to defend or get up, your opponent can join you on the floor and eithr submit or punch you out. You should try watching Pride FC or IVC where they allow kicks to the head of a downed opponent. Well, maybe you shouldn't if this is new to you at this pont. While it might not appear (visually) to be sporting or fair and is aesthetically barbaric, it's safer for the guy getting kicked in the head than in boxing, and it's far, far more realistic. Being given an 8count in boxing only gives you the chance to stand on your own two feet and receive more damage. As it's been said by many already, boxing is based on the accumulation of brain beatings, expecting 1000 punches to be received, whereas in MMA, with 4oz. gloves, a clean shot is all that's really needed. A common misconception is that the gloves in boxing protect the guy being hit, actually they do more to protect the hands of the thrower. You can't throw a weak sloppy shot in 4oz gloves, you'll break your hand. With boxing gloves the impact -IS- cushioned for the guy being hit, but it's spread out over a wider area and causes deeper trauma. That's why you see guys getting hit 1000 times in boxing hwo just look a little puffy on the outside, but inside their head is a merry-go-round of damage - viceversa, in MMA, someone getting hit once, is KOed, and wakes up with a sharp pain and a prominent chunk of swelling in the one place he was hit.
