- Ryan0617, on 07/17/2008, -1/+9They know they are going to get tested, why bother cheat? Its dragging the reputation of the sport through the mud again.
- thaboosh, on 07/17/2008, -0/+7actually there are most likely less drugs in the tour then most other sports they just test the hell outta these guys. They cant even have Sudafed in their system. Other sports (baseball and football) just have extremely ***** testing that's more for show then actual results.
- espowari, on 07/17/2008, -0/+7I wish our major sports here in America would test for illegal substances like this. NFL, NBA, MLB...etc - should all have to pee in a cup before stepping onto the field of play IMHO.
- monkeymagnus, on 07/17/2008, -0/+6Because, for the majority of the riders that do not try and cheat, this is one of the greatest and most prestigious races in the world. It's just such a shame that, year after year, there are those people who try to cheat the system.

TdF and cycling in general has very high quality tests. In several sports (like NHL) there are no tests at all. So it is not a surprise that cyclists are getting caught.

When was the last time a non-doping TdF news hit the front page? Hello?

Yes, riders using doping are jackasses. And using EPO is so 90s.
Ps. Lavelanet - Narbonne stage is on. Tune on what ever network shows it on your area. - stevetrojanman, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4I don't mind them weeding out these idiots one at a time...
If at the end of the day the race is clean, them I'm happy. The Floyd Landis thing still doesn't make sense to me though. - Rudegar, on 07/17/2008, -2/+5epo == Tour de french cuisine
- semiring, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3I'm an amateur bike racer in North America and I compete at the very bottom level of amateur racing. No big cash prizes, no TV cameras, no Phil Liggett, no fame. It's supposed to be just a bunch of guys who like bicycle racing and don't have the talent to ever turn pro.
Even at this level, there are apparently guys doping. I don't mean to imply that it's rampant, but there are certainly people who talk openly about it. Don't take my word for it though... if you really want to be depressed, have a look here:

Catching dopers at the pro level, and ending their careers, is setting the right example. - osfan456, on 07/16/2008, -2/+5God ***** dammit. Why do these guys think they can get away with it?
- eddiemerckx, on 07/17/2008, -2/+5and now ricco has been banned as well as the whole saunier duval team
- mkchu84, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3Doping is definitely a big problem for cycling. I think the media attention that it gets though is a bit unfair. Considering that cycling is one of the most regulated sports for drugs testing there are bound to be more positive tests. Also, the fact that whole teams are thrown out of tours, a positive action against doping, just draws more attention to it. In other sports such as football, positive drug tests are just swept under the rug and forgotten about.
- mkpaa, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2You bet!
I am pretty sure there aren't any puncture repair kits on tour. :)
They can check all teams and riders. And most likely find 0. - sodade, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Maybe they need to simply have two categories of rider - on drug or off drug. Just keep the two separated in the rankings (two yellow jerseys!) and give all the prestige to the non-drugged ones. Eventually, all the riders will want to be on clean list.
- Rotzooi, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2The majority manages just fine. A few unlucky ones get caught.
It sucks to have a sport so drugged up, but on the other hand - it's the viewers who want spectacular rides across four mountains. Day after day. - alecks, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1What I don't get, is that they all know they're gonna be tested.... do they hope the test will fail in their favor or something? If you know you're getting drug tested, how do you expect to pass?

- ProjectGSX, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2Its amazing that all of these cyclists are on drugs yet Lance Armstrong won so many consecutive Tour's without testing positive. Makes you wonder.
- heinleineken, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1how about a lifetime ban, 2 years salary to the riders union, and two years to the WADA... Let's make it REALLY hurt.
Two year ban for a positive test for a performance enhancer...get serious. It's not the same as Petacchi's positive for elevated levels of albuterol--a drug which is used the world over by asthmatics, and COULD be used as an enhancer...CERA and EPO of any variety cannot be excused, and should be met with a lifetime ban, and a huge whack in the wallet--but I can see banning Petacchi for two years for an extra puff on his enhaler--
The testers should be held to the same standards too. As it stands now, 40,000 euro the the right guy, and you're looking at a "false" positive for a rival. Who needs to dope when you can pay a lab guy to say your rivals doped...ooooh it gets ugly now.
If you think its new, look at Fignon in the Giro....TV helicopter in front of him for the final TT. You try fighting a headwind to win... - moonboots, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Meta-Comment #3: Yeah, CERA is the current style
- screamingjoker, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1Wait they arrested him for this? Arrested? Really? France is killing the last sporting event it can claim as its own. In a kind of half joking way, Rick Ross implied that if you had a "steroid" baseball league, and a "clean" league, the clean league would be out of business in 10 years. As long as people want the appearance of superhuman feats, they will get doped athletes giving them what they want.
BTW it has been proven that Tour Riders have bee using substances since the 50's probably longer, but the didn't have tests. So its quite possible that there hasn't been a "clean" winner in decades. - DestroyFascism, on 07/17/2008, -3/+2Well to be honest, they all take it so the field is even yeah?
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -4/+3No surprise. There are more drugs in the Tour de France than puncture repair kits.
- Vodd9, on 07/17/2008, -4/+3How about Lance Armstrong?
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -3/+1When faced with the option of biking up those mountains without drugs, or getting yelled in a French accent, turns out most people choose the drugs.
- Cherubim, on 07/17/2008, -2/+0Well another rider who won two stages has now been busted - Italian Ricardo Ricco. This bloke was clearly doped up given the way he shot off up the mountains.
Once again this shows what a monumental FARCE the Tour De France is. Still love the scenery though :) - ebidk, on 07/17/2008, -7/+0I'm wondering why people still care about the tour.
