- fitqueenb, on 07/04/2008, -2/+10I would have thought this would have been a great time for businesses to have increased profit, however things seem to be always much harder and difficult over there when it comes to large events. I guess I just do not understand their culture well enough.
- kd420, on 07/05/2008, -4/+11I still can't see how Beijing got the Olympics with pollution as bad as it is. How are athletes supposed to do their best in these conditions? Oh wait, maybe the athletes and the spirit of the Olympics wasn't the most important deciding factor, like it should be.
- crossmr, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4Many other countries will do the same. Korea, Japan, Canada, etc
Don't overstay your time. She broke the law and she's upset they won't let her stay again. - inactive, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4The Olympics have always been a bust for restaurants and most other local businesses. Usually, only the hotels and game venues benefit. Visitors don't leave those much, and the natives always stay away due to fears of congestion.
I wouldn't wish the Olympics on Cleveland. - HappyScrappy, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3I don't think so, most people either have business to conduct there and so have to put up with it, or haven't been there to experience it, so don't know it'll be that bad.
I've never been to Beijing, but I've been to Shanghai, and the air varies from bad to horrible. It's a great city though, hopefull the Chinese will get a handle on the pollution. - whozyodaddy, on 07/05/2008, -2/+5I wonder if pollution has anything to do with this. Beijing, on a normal day, has more air pollution than Los Angeles on its most polluted day.
- BossKey, on 07/05/2008, -1/+4There's a committee that wants to bring the Olympics to my city. I hope they never succeed. From what I've heard in other cities, the Olympics is just a whole lot of expense, traffic, and hassle for the actual residents of the city, with a whole lot of profit headed straight outta town.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3Not this ***** again.

- acid0426, on 07/05/2008, -2/+5I wonder if the anti-terrorism force realizes it should be arresting the country's leaders.
- MaxPayne3476, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3its Beijing not Compton
- macmangb, on 07/05/2008, -4/+6Do not forget that China murdered over a hundred thousand tibetans in the lead up to the Olympics, while they were doing peaceful protests.
- edebolt, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2no its different. Most people get a 10 year visa for the US and have to get a border stamp yearly. In China you need a new tourist visa and they just aren't issuing them unless you have a buttoned down itenerary with two way flight reservations and hotel verification. Once the olympics are over then the will let the expats come back. It's quite a migration going on now of expats having to leave the PRC.
- kublerross, on 07/05/2008, -4/+6 what a non story at the beginning. boohoo some girl overstayed her visa and is upset that they didnt grant her a new one?
anyone familiar with US immigration knows that we would do the exact same. - nericus, on 07/05/2008, -8/+10120 diggs.... one comment... front page? SHENANIGANS!
- WikiEasy, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2No, the problem is with ridiculously tough visa requirements in anticipation for the Olympics. Prices are much higher, and people are getting their visa applications denied left and right. On top of this, you're basically considered a criminal on probation. Police officers randomly come by and knock on your door, demanding you show your residence and visa papers.
You are viewed as a crook by default almost. - zer0nix, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2sources? i find that exaggerated figure just a bit suspect.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -1/+3its Beijing not Baghdad.
- cave, on 07/05/2008, -7/+9I'd like to meet the moran who thought handing over the 2008 Olympics to China was a good idea, and smack him over the head.
- crossmr, on 07/05/2008, -2/+3Business travelers having trouble?
My company sends tons of people to china all the time. The last time my coworker went, he was given 2 days notice and the local embassy produced his visa in that time no problem. Maybe some people/companies just suck at filing the proper paperwork. - amida, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1It's not so rare for people to overstay by a couple days or something due to illness, missed or cancelled flights, or miscounting the number of days stayed (thinking that the count starts on the first full day in the country rather than on the day of arrival, no matter the time). Usually even China will just fine you, have you sign something saying you screwed up, and give you some kind of stamp allowing you to get out of the country. It sounds like the girl in the article had a work visa application in the works, visited on a tourist visa in the meantime, and overstayed. Sure, China has every right to refuse her application or whatever they want, but it is not completely unfathomable that she overstayed.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1It's not gonna be a bust. IT will be a HUGE pleasant surprisingly enjoyable event.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -2/+3care to cite that source
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -1/+2Do you even watch news? Just watch the pictures on TV. the Air has visible signs of Smoke and pollution. you gotta be blind to not notice that.

I'm surprised the Olympics are given any credence at all. - inactive, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1thats cause you are doing it from your home country. previously china use to give arrival visa and many people could apply for a business Visa from Hong Kong. But now thats not possible. now they force you to go back to your home country to get a visa.
- MaxPayne3476, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1I'm going to guess you live in Chicago. If so, I wouldn't mind it there because I could easily travel and see the Olympics - but hell, look at the situation that London is. I don't blame you for NOT wanting the olympics in your city.
- MaxPayne3476, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Actually, if you overstay your visa here, all you need to do is stay in an immigrant safe haven (Riverside, NJ for ex) and then apply for permenant residence in the meantime
- WikiEasy, on 07/05/2008, -1/+2It's called first-hand experience. Many many people have been there, and almost without exception, they say taking deep breaths in Beijing will have you coughing. You almost never see the clouds, nor birds for that matter.
Believe me, the worst day in LA is much better than the best day in Beijing, in terms of weather. - MaxPayne3476, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Actually, we're pretty damn flexible with our immigration. Try to file to move to the EU or to Austrailia. ;) that's real fun
- cave, on 07/05/2008, -4/+4The US is probably the worst standard you can hold other countries up against in the immigration department. At least in the non-communist world.
- HappyScrappy, on 07/05/2008, -2/+2At work, we have to get a constant supply of Chinese visas. It's been really tough (not to mention expensive) lately. The situation is bad enough that it is really untenable, Taiwan will start to take business away if it stays this way. But probably by the end of August, they'll relax the restrictions again in order to prevent a situation like this.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -2/+2Buried as inaccurate, the 2008 Olympics have been canceled and replaced the the "Happy luck fascist show time".
- whorunbartertwn, on 07/05/2008, -0/+0I agree. How on earth do you inadvertently overstay a tourist visa? I've traveled plenty and am always aware how much time remains on the visa so can plan to apply for extension or do the leave-return. A tourist visa isn't some multi-year deal it's a timeframe that managing should have been a high concern.
- rajk0909, on 07/07/2008, -0/+0Maybe an initial loss to their business but once the Olympics draw closer, these same businesses are gonna witness a stupendous windfall
- noobpower2, on 07/05/2008, -2/+1jesus christ....
- OpCzar, on 07/05/2008, -3/+2I expect false starts during sprinting events because of stray gunshots.
