- burstaneurysm, on 11/21/2008, -21/+67Chicago 2016 would be amazing. Not only would it be great to get the games back in the US, but it might also convince people that Chicago isn't some haven for murderers. It's time for that reputation to be laid to rest.
- Hetman, on 11/21/2008, -5/+45I love chicago. It is one of the few places I would ever live. But i think the best way to stop the reputation of being a haven for murderers is to stop people from murdering. Regardless if we get the olympics or not that BS needs to stop.

- flashboy131, on 11/21/2008, -2/+20Chicago's fine, just stay away from the Southside, now that's some scary *****. Everywhere else is fine really, not much worse than New York or Los Angeles, every city has it's scary side.
- flashboy131, on 11/21/2008, -1/+19we want 3 of 8
- ZaZ2137, on 11/21/2008, -0/+17@flashboy131
no, we want 7 of 9 - Quick2822, on 11/21/2008, -4/+20I work in Chicago everyday. I have never once not felt safe.
Stop stereotyping a city based on your limited knowledge and what the Republicans told you about Chicago. - vtnerd, on 11/21/2008, -12/+27Chicago and Illinois can acknowledge that concealed carry saves lives and reduces crime by implementing it and joining the rest of the country. They can also remove the draconian restrictions that infringe upon their citizens' 2nd Amendment rights. At that time, violent crime will begin to decrease and Chicago might actually not be a haven for murderers. But as it stands, your violent crime rate is skyrocketing due to gang violence and innocent people are getting caught in the crossfire while responsible law-abiding citizens are unable to defend themselves and gangs do as they please without fear of consequence from the people they are hurting.
Will you admit now that your unconstitutional gun control policies have failed? Probably not. When you do, I'm open to holding the games in your city. - mhopgood, on 11/21/2008, -1/+15As a resident of Chicago living next to Washington Park (and only two blocks from Obama's house!), I can say that there are a lot of questions as to whether or not this will, in the long run, benefit Chicago or not. As I'm with The University of Chicago (located in Hyde Park), I can say that I'll still be around regardless because the University will protect it's interests. But for the local in Hyde Park, many of whom are middle-lower income, this stands to do a lot of damage. The rent will increase astronomically, business will be shut down and opened specifically for this event, and the shape of the South Side will change permanently.
The city of Chicago (read: Mayor Daley) could use this as an excellent catalyst to improving the conditions for low-income persons on the South Side, but the great fear is that it will only move the problem, displacing thousands of people to less-suitable residents, away from their jobs and their community, and giving nothing back to them or the South Side in return.
That being said, I support Chicago's Olympic Bid, if only that is serves as a chance to bring much-needed change to Hyde Park... and because it would be so bad ass to be here when it happened. - mchisari, on 11/21/2008, -1/+10
Seriously, where do people get this? Chicago is statistically safer than Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh is a very safe city. - Hetman, on 11/21/2008, -1/+9I work for low income housing. And the benefits that people are talking about on our side of the equation would be improved and more lower income housing. This is because we would have to build lodging for the increase in the amount of people we would see in the city. And after the Olympics we use these same buildings to create lower income housing/elderly housing and housing for the disabled. But who knows. But I tell you one thing the city will never do is have a completely low income housing community. We have seen the disaster that can cause. We just have to look at our past failures of Cabrini Green and the Taylor homes.
- Hetman, on 11/21/2008, -3/+10Im digging you down because you say chicago is ***** not because of what you said about Obama.
- Hetman, on 11/21/2008, -4/+11I am a firm believer in the second amendment. I have never said our gun control policies were good. But if you want to end gang violence end the war on drugs. With out money it would reduce the amount of gangs drastically.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7But Obama makes the whole world love the US, you didn't hear?
- scamper22, on 11/22/2008, -1/+8lol. you worried about crime in chicago for an international event?
How about my home country... South Africa hosting the world cup in 2010.
Once the world sees that, they'd beg for a safe city like Chicago. - Hetman, on 11/21/2008, -1/+8To late for that America picked chicago as their olympic city way before he was in office.
- nlkunz, on 11/21/2008, -1/+7It's not the concealed/carrying part that bothers me so much. I was pretty miffed to find out that I was not allowed to have a handgun IN MY HOME, though.
What good is a shotgun going to do you when a burglar breaks in? "Oh wait, Mr. Scary Man, let me go into my closet and pull out my shot gun, pull out some shells, load the gun, take the safety off, then shoot you." Not to mention the fact that there's really no need to have a shotgun in a city home. You gonna go out in the back alley and hunt some rats? - EvilCan, on 11/22/2008, -0/+6KingHarvest: You might want to update your profile. It says you're from Philly.
- Hetman, on 11/21/2008, -1/+6Some olympics earn money some lose them.
- burstaneurysm, on 11/21/2008, -5/+10Oh no... did I hurt your internet feelings??
You're not going to get murdered if you go on vacation here. I've lived in the city for 25 years and I haven't been murdered yet. People think that every 5th person getting of a plane in the city is getting capped in the face. That's idiotic.
Check out these stats...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_cities_ ...
Better stay out of 15 other cities that have higher per capita rates than Chicago too. - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -28/+32If they can get that murder rate down, I'd love to go.
- Hetman, on 11/21/2008, -1/+5That proves nothing. I have buried the first post on a page and never posted anything. And obviously the guy cannot bury himself.
- FearlessFreep, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4Don't forget rehashing the old foreign policy team
http://www.alternet.org/story/107666/?page=entire - aetherboy, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4As a resident in East Lakeview who works on Michigan Ave. + Illinois all I can say is I sure as hell hope the Olympics don't come here. Yes I know it would be a fun thing but the disruption to my life would negate any of the coolness of having the Olympics here. I can't imagine the strain it would put on our already ridiculously overcrowded/underfunded public transit systems and in a ***** economy the last thing I want is for my rent to increase and I'm sure every greedy landlord out there will jack their rent regardless of where they own properties because hey, the Olympics are here!
Not to mention the nonstop advertising I'll see all over the place, the influx of stupid tourists and conartists trying to scam said tourists. And the fact that there will be ridiculous restrictions on brand logos, etc.
Please for the love of god have the Olympics elsewhere...I'm more than content with watching it on my flatscreen. - digg1520, on 11/22/2008, -1/+5Yeah like this is the reason for gang violence. Total *****. Do you really think gang members who are ALREADY risking their live in battles with enemy gangs care if there are some more guns in the hands of "neutrals"? Also you are talking about people getting killed in crossfire. What are you going to do about it if you have a gun, start shooting around randomly? This will certainly help reduce the number of crossfire victims.
- superterrorizer, on 11/21/2008, -2/+6Yes, because China was soooooooo safe with their dirty water, disease, insane government leaders and people that just...disappear.
- Relikh, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4Hmm, I usually never make this many posts on one article, but I'm going to have to disagree with you here. This couldn't possibly be pandering to the president because IF Obama makes it to a second term, it would be the very very end of it. I really don't see any relation to Obama at all.
On top of that, Chicago was seen as a frontrunner candidate for the 2016 Olympics a year or two ago. - Hetman, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4You would benifit from the increased infastructer after the games are over. It is not like the olympics last that long.
- highlymodified, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductio_ad_Hitlerum
Your retardation is showing.
Please tuck it in. - nlkunz, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3I could deal with fewer calls from random extended family members or casual acquaintances saying "If the Olympics come, can I stay at your house?"
No. No you may not. - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -2/+5"it might also convince people that Chicago isn't some haven for murderers. It's time for that reputation to be laid to rest."
Tough to lay a reputation to rest when it's still accurate. It's like saying it's time to lay to rest the reputation the sun has for being bright. - queenofpainting, on 11/21/2008, -5/+8Chicago's great. I hope they're able to host.
- Autodidaddict, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3"Increased infrastructure" will take almost a decade, and instead of having time to thoughtfully plan it out it will be rushed with deadlines. A small oversight in planning infrastructure can lead to decades of headaches. Just ask anyone who commutes on I-290 to/from the city everyday about what happens at Oak Park when it bottlenecks. Exit and entrance ramps from the left fast lanes? Good idea.....
Our CTA/RTA is already so messed up and broke and in debt. Sure, in the past, US cities have profited when hosting the Olympics but you never know in the future. Especially with the world economy, foreign relations, and technology. More and more people can watch coverage on the TV and Internet, so will people flying into Chicago and pumping money into the city be far less in 8 years from now?
Also, if you've ever lived in Chicago it's not like we have a ton of open free space we can just dedicate to the huge demand the Olympics will have, such as an athletes village. Also, transporting everyone everywhere will be a disaster, our public transportation systems are already overburdened and even though the city will get grants and loans to "improve infrastructure", you can only make streets and railways so wide because the city is so developed.
It would be cool to see the Olympics land in Chicago, but it will be far from rosey for the people that live here for years and years leading up to it.
I love people who don't live here chiming in saying whether it's a good idea or not...like your neighbor telling you how to build the deck in your backyard... - TheScogg, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3I'm sure it's not a warzone, but saying everywhere in Chicago except for the Southside is not that much worse than L.A. or NYC is not going to make people feel safe.
- TheBuzzKiller, on 11/21/2008, -3/+6Are there really places in the states where you can hide a handgun in your pocket and walk around the streets?
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3You mean like recycling?
- mchisari, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4"I could go on and on, but if you were concerned with facts, rather than your personal and anecdotal experience"
Did you not read what I just wrote? Chicago is, statistically, a very safe large city. - GrodyChamp, on 11/21/2008, -4/+7China was terrible as well. How about a nice US city though. Chicago is barely a step up from Detroit lol
- Owwmykneecap, on 11/22/2008, -1/+4you had Atlanta in 1996 and LA. in 1984.
Rio or Tokyo please. - rald84, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3atlanta 1996 and salt lake 2002 turned a profit.
- Eddiecoaster, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4Not while the whole city is under construction. In time, yes.
- boombye, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3Which you frequent often in hopes of finally getting married.
- Lavarock, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3Because you have to pay MONEY to host the Olympic games.
- boombye, on 11/22/2008, -2/+4I live in Chicago in a neighborhood that has some bad elements, there's like 10 different gangs all around me. Chicago is a big city, I find it amusing reading comments from small towners like vtnerd. Suburbans and small towners are always saying this ***** all the time, it's never going to change, it's old news, and they'll always cry about this *****. Well this is what happens when we have a big city with millions of people.
Somehow, someway, allowing people to carry weapons is going to somehow curb violence committed by people cruising around looking for enemy gangs to shoot down knowing full well they are also strapped. They don't care if someone has a gun or not to defend themselves with, they will engage in a fire fight, lots of the people dying are underage teenagers as well, so it's not like they're allowed to carry weapons unless you're advocated that kids of all ages should get some guns because then maybe that would help. - Autodidaddict, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Please tell me how this is possible? Does the IOC just give the winning bidder millions of dollars to start building new stadiums and roads?
No. Some benefits might be realized. Construction and contracting companies would be happy. Most commuters would feel a lot of inconvenience and hassle for about 6 years, then 2 weeks of pride, then (god forbid the city doesn't profit from the games) we could get stuck with the mess for decades to come.
I'm not saying I don't want the Olympics here. I just want residents here to think about the issue more, ask tougher questions, and get some assurances from politicians, businesses, and the IOC - Hetman, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Hmm let see my mom lived in chicago for 16 years. I visited frequently because I lived right over the border in indiana. I have lived in Chicago for the past 3 years. And I agree that we do not have a lot of open space and it really pisses me off that Mayor daley wants to move the childrens museum to grant park but that is a different story. I take the El everyday and it is ***** and that is one of the reasons that I want the olympics to be hosted here is because I think it will improve it.
- TheScogg, on 11/21/2008, -1/+3I don't know the laws, but judging by the number of "No Concealed Weapons Beyond this Point" signs I've seen on courthouses and the like, I'd say yes. This is in Kentucky.
- deema1, on 11/22/2008, -1/+3Olympic Committee, the deity has spoken. Anoint Chicago the chosen city or face the wrath of the almighty OBAMA!!! He will Gozer the Gozarian your asses with the grotesque Stay-Puft Marshmallow Oprah should you defy his commands.
- Owwmykneecap, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Japan is the 2nd largest economy in the world.
And they use Yen, not "benjamins". - oboshoe, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Im sure that there are some favorite charities that the IOC would entertain a donation to.
Not that this has never happened before. -
