Then they began deleting all of the online references to their national gymnastic association which listed the girls as underage, and told everyone the girls "accidentally" misstated their ages in interviews.

It's because they can do severe damage to their bodies, physically, by trying difficult stunts that are required for international competitions. The older, more mature bones and ligaments are more able to withstand the pounding and it's harder for the national systems to take advantage of them.

This just means that if a country can falsify documents, their athletes will get the clear through another ID system that can't tell if the documents are fake or not.

They just never bothered permanently recording the ID down (which is what the licensing proposal would do.)
It never occurred to them that a state might change a gymnast's age. (It should have though, that's a power of the state.)
Of course this only prevents changes at a later point in time. The state has to make a decision about the gymnast's age right before the license is obtained. - Damoclez, on 10/28/2008, -0/+0It has been done before by a few countries, but most countries don't have such a tight socialistic control over everything like they do in China, so making the 'correct' docs disappear isn't very difficult.

If there was any question of lip syncing, to the point where it actually mattered, and the Olympic committee spent a month looking at the evidence, they'd come to the same conclusion that there was infact lipsyncing going on. Evidence is evidence. -
