Gone nuts? When weren't they? From Tibet to the Taiwanese aborigines on the plains who lost most of their land, China has long oppressed people. Not that other countries haven't, but it seems to me China too has a long history of oppressing minority groups.

inactive, on 07/18/2008, -1/+37No, this is waaayyy better for China. During the Cultural Revolution, Mao received a report that a certain bird was overpopulated due to seasonal fluctuations with heat and moisture and created more food which created more birds.

So what did Mao do? He declared that China shall fight this threat and that everyone in the country should do their part to kill off this species to a reasonable number.

What happened was communities got together and just killed any bird and felt patriotic doing it. The bird, and many others, almost went extinct. The birds could not eat the insects anymore, so the insects bred to insane numbers and ate all of China's crops. Millions starved to death.

Compared to many things China has done in the past 50 years, this is very, very minor.

The Japanese have thousands of years of xenophobia and systemic isolationism, along with a cultural superiority complex.

And china I don't know nothing about, but they can all get behind being racist towards black people.

Lionhart, on 07/18/2008, -3/+29Don't be kidding yourself. It's very common in Japan and Korea also for bars to refuse to serve black people, and sometimes foreigners in general. I know that at least in Japan it is not illegal to discriminate against foreigners, or "gaijin."

Many Sanlitun bars have live bands playing, some Filipino and others black (various countries of origin). Lots of black patrons as well. And there are more and more black businessmen in China, especially since China is pushing its influence in Africa.

This seems suspect; it's simply bad business.
