- mjordan4343, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1BRING IT BACK!!!
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Except when you play F-Zero you don't get as much pollution, especially the pollution stains on the window from where this picture was taken from (look in the upper right corner, its quite disgusting, as it gives you an idea how much exotic acid rain Shanghai gets).
- bnolsen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0My wife said the pollution was far worse 10 years ago.
But it still is obvious. It only takes a couples of years for black streaks to show up on any of the buildings, high rises included. Makes new buildings look old in a big hurry.
My thought about Shanghai always is: "Nothing wrong with Shanghai that a few coats of paint won't fix."
- bnolsen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0My wife said the pollution was far worse 10 years ago.
- raymore, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1F-Zero, is that the game where you race the hella sweet space hover things? if so,well, yeah I agree.

- rollerxpig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I agree. He's got some fantastic photography on his page.
- crackedplastic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2What's up with this guy's blog? He gets hits for other people's content on Flickr? Jeez. And that particular image is AAR as well.
- Mouser58907, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Those ads really ruin the landscape.

- mrfreeziexp, on 10/11/2007, -2/+63Digg needs a picture section!
- reflex768, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Yes it does. Do we know why that's hasn't happened? I don't think I've ever heard it addressed by Rose & Co.
- rnnbob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2How could we get one?
- chris4404, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Spam pictures like we spammed the HDDVD key.
- d686, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4they know... they discussed it on the last diggnation. they're "working on it". maybe they're trying to implement something with their own hosting and working on the legal issues... who knows..
- reflex768, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Thanks. Missed that.
- crackedplastic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You think that will stop people from posting pictures elsewhere? Look what happened to the videos section.
- bigpixl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Looks like I have a new wallpaper.
- noPCtoday, on 10/11/2007, -4/+38Does anyone else noticed the air is severely polluted?
- rmmcclay, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1Probably no worse than LA. =)
- krakbabie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I was in Shanghai in April, the pollution is incredibly bad. Much worse then anything I have seen in the US. My eyes were burning after 2 weeks.
- polymorphist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Well, if you think pollution in Shanghai is bad, don't go anywhere near Beijing :)
- krakbabie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I was in Shanghai in April, the pollution is incredibly bad. Much worse then anything I have seen in the US. My eyes were burning after 2 weeks.
- Konstantino, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Well, take a look at it. This looks like the future -- what all cities will look like in 20 to 30 years. And ironically enough, in those 20 to 30 years we're likely to have polluted air.
- Netrilix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Sorry, no. I'm not disputing your facts or anything. I'm just disputing your use of "ironic". You'd be closer to irony if the air WASN'T going to be polluted in the future like it is in the futuristic-looking Shanghai picture. The fact that the futuristic Shanghai picture and the future both have lots of pollution? That would be a coincidence. So please, please, please only use irony in cases where the result is the OPPOSITE of what's expected.
- akira117, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Looks like fog to me but what ever.....
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually, that's an absurdly clear day. Many days you couldn't see across the river from here. Some days you can't see the GROUND from 20 floors higher than this pic was taken.
- limemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2We have rain season right now in Shanghai, it's raining nearly every week for few days, and inbetween you have high humidity and fog from all the evaporating water. We have bad air pollution in Shanghai, but i don't think it's that much worse than for example in L.A. Other parts of china are of course different story.
- donkeyshow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Hooray Pollution! Great sunsets with all the smog..
- wanderwoman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I was in Shanghai during July. It was so polluted, a bag which I bought there has a smell.
- rmmcclay, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1Probably no worse than LA. =)
- futureisours, on 10/11/2007, -9/+1Dugg down. Where's all the pollution?
- reckless8594, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4In the sky stupid.
- bdub92, on 10/11/2007, -1/+35Oh, thank god, i saw the title and thought it was going to be another Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan movie...
- >mark, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3You can just see all the pollution
- HammerAndBoner, on 10/11/2007, -3/+50Buried for the lack of Jackie Chan or Owen Wilson.
- Jambi, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4Why the hell would you want to see those two? Those buddy movies sucked. Chan's way funnier solo.
- Trax91, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I've been there and the view was spectacular.
- jayxcee, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Gorgeous
It makes me want to visit Shanghai (: - bmc31190, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2That city looks gross at night time. The air is horribly polluted, and there are advertisements lighting up the river.
- daxsymbiont, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4and we sooooooo care about your blog.

- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2The future. Today. :-)
- bobcrotch, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3People think China is the future yet they hate America.
Wow. - polymorphist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Americans think everyone else hates them...I call it paranoia city.
- bobcrotch, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3People think China is the future yet they hate America.
- terencec, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8hong kong looks better in my opinion... cleaner too
- RobynG7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I guess it's all relative.
- sethosayher, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I'm putting that up as wallpaper, but that doesn't hide the fact that the city is actually extremely polluted. That's the price of China's extraordinary economic growth.
- NiGHTSChao, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Yeah I was wondering about the smog as well, I was curious if it was smog or just the camera
But it doesn't surprise me, Arizona is just the same (somedays worse)- triath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Maybe the Phoenix area, but no where else.
- thebillgonadz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0This looks like a job for the Suntots.
- BethMarks, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Beautiful! Would hate to breath the air.
- willi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not all over China is polluted. China is a large country, you can't generalize. Shanghai is actually quite clean.
- wddwmmandalore, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1whatttttt, now thats insane
- shinpoe, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1who says pollution is always a bad thing
- JustSomeDood, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Beautiful picture, but yea, where is the pollution. I worked in Shanghai for over two years and I can tell you the air quality was horrid. Not only that but the noise was terrible. Shanghai truly is a great city to travel to. They have some great bars and restaurants. The interesting thing about Shanghai is that you can be looking at some of the most modern looking buildings in the world and just a block or two away you'll find the cardboard shacks and beggars. Though not the cleanest place on the planet it's still a very interesting place to visit.

- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The Pearl Tower (and Super Brand Mall) are actually in Pudong, as is the Grand Hyatt, which I think this picture is being taken from.
The stuff across the river is all Shanghai though.
As pretty as this is, I think it's prettier to take a picture from the Bund back the Pearl Tower (Pudong). Shanghai is a collection of gobs of 40 story buildings. Pudong has fewer buildings, but they're 70 stories and taller. The building this was taken from (if it is the Grand Hyatt) is 88 stories tall.
Note this picture is faked up with "HDR" (i.e. Photoshop).- dreamlayers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Isn't Pudong just a district within Shanghai? That would be like Manhattan in New York City.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1More like Brooklyn within NYC, but yeah, Pudong is under Shanghai's control.
I guess if you say Kowloon is in HK, then you'd say Pudong is in Shanghai.
Shanghai was the most important city in the Pacific 100 years ago. Pudong was farm land 15 years ago.- chenbot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Shanghai is split into 2 parts, Pudong and Puxi, The names mean "East of the river" and "West of the river" respectively. It's true that Pudong was all farm land 15 years ago, but to say that one of them is the real Shanghai and the other is not is kind of dumb.
Also, I'm pretty sure no one would say Brooklyn is not NYC.

- Raskob, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0well that's now my background
- o0o0steve, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Interesting.. Motion blur on the river and the brightness of the photo both indicate an obvious slow shutter, but how come the car lights aren't blurry? Is everyone parked?
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's photoshopped. "HDR".
The bright parts come from a fast photo, the dark parts from a slow one.
Just look at the part of the building in the lower right and you can see it is too bright/detailed compared to the other objects in the photo which are actually self-lit.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's photoshopped. "HDR".
- bortis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1And also... aside from the major skyscrapers and advertising signs, there seem to be no lights on in any of the smaller apartment-looking buildings. They all seem completely dark. That would be odd at any hour of the night. What's going on there?
- EndlessSadness, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Good question, all I knew is all the office buildings have to turn off the lights after work if no on staying. Those apartment buildings next to that river are just built, and very pricy, basically no one lives in there.
- tavisjohn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That looks like it came from Highlander 2! The sky looks like it is under that energy shield!
I am impresed how this fit's soo many movies! - mattmollysdad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1used HDR... but still nice
- tbr0, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1beautiful image... but it's even more impressive in real life. :)
- SoulPusher, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I'm almost waiting for the Mortal Kombat music to fade in.

- crashflow, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3CARDBOARD DUMPLINGS TASTE GREAT, CONTENTED CITIZENS WOULD LIKE SOME MORE!
- bnolsen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Oh man, don't dump on the food in Shanghai.
They have some absolutely find dumplings and awesome "fusion" cuisine (including baked goods).
Corner stores that sell danta'a (egg custard tarts), a couple places that sell something like a dumpling that is larger and has soup inside.
I'll take street food in Shanghai any day over most crap that's sold in the US.
- bnolsen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Oh man, don't dump on the food in Shanghai.

- CannibalTom, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1pollution for the win.
- fixedcoma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Finally at least cannibal noticed! Yeah , the building in the fronyt is pretty neat looking, but you can't even see past two miles or hardly see the clouds from all the pollution. I wonder what their life expectancy is? Kind of wonder if they're try and make the yellow sea really yellow with pollution?!!
- polymorphist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The life expectancy in Shanghai is on par with that of a developed country, inconveniently true...
BTW, the yellow river is actually yellow and nowhere near Shanghai.
- polymorphist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The life expectancy in Shanghai is on par with that of a developed country, inconveniently true...
- twrife, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm surprised you can see anything due to pollution.
- Lokishot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11 word: Freaking Sweet!

- raymore, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1China 1, USA 0
So we need to get back to being "that" country that builds the newest sweetest tallest whatever. Seriously. We need to stop focusing on foreign politics, and get ***** done at home. - simonwright, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I'd be far more interested in seeing the original untouched photograph(s). I find it hard to believe that real life has ever looked that dramatic.
- theysayjump, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's one of the most beautiful and amazing skyline pictures I've ever seen.
- hedde, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Beautiful. I just put it in my inspiration del.icio.us account for my upcoming Internet-series. Thanks!
