How to Stop Comment Spam without Lifting a Finger

tubetorial.com — With subject matter including ringtones, viagra, and everything in between, spammy comments can ruin the credibility of your blog in a hurry. On top of that, managing all that spam so that it doesn ’t go public can take all the fun out of running your site.

  • MaxwellEPad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Akismet is probably the best plugin ever ... but it already comes with every wordpress install, so not sure who's learning something here (unless it's also available for other blogs). Dugg because Akismet is cool.
    • lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed. Akismet also has a lot of other uses, though, and they offer a lot of resources for a multitude of languages and implementations. And Akismet is really good: "Akismet has protected your site from 14235 spam comments." That's with maybe 30-50 misses since I installed it. I'm definitely a fan.

      Every month, I love going to the admin panel and seeing Akismet has block 300-400 messages :-)

    • spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been running WordPress with Akismet for just a couple of months now. I didn't even realize it had blocked spam comments until I checked manually. It stopped about 25 spams while allowing about 8 legitimate comments - one of which was smarmy with all kinds of fake HTML tags.

      I love Akismet so far. It'd be nice if you didn't have to make an account for it to work, but so far it's been well worth it.

  • eliburford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well I know for a fact that Akismet is very useful. It very rarely catches a legitimate comment and so far it's been through about 2.5k spam comments for me.
    So yeah, this article (video) will be useful for people who run WordPress and don't have spam protection.
  • coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It catches many, but not all. Every once and a while an obvious spammer will be let through and pound my site with his crap messages. It's also never caught a legit comment as far as I know (not like I could really keep track with the ridiculous number of spam comments I get a day).

    Spammers make me wish that I could strangle people through the internet. Their total disregard for the work that people put into their personal web pages pisses me off to no end.

    • masterofshadows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1spammers occasionally pay people to solve captchas for them. thus you need a combination of efforts to defeat spam, heuristics + registration + captcha seems to be a fairly useful method and as such its quite popular, however the more you do the more you alienate your users, its quite difficult to combat spam and have users who want to contribute.

  • MarketingVideos, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1I stopped all my comment spam for my Wordpress blog by using "Comment Bot Nuker". All the other plugins I tried for Wordpress only holds the comment spam from moderation. I tried them all even the "add math" and Askimet. Most all the comment spam you will get is actually from the bots that scour the Internet looking for security breaches. Using Comment Bot Nuker it nukes the comments before it is even held for moderation and lets the good comments through. So there is nothing to moderate. I don't have to go through hundreds of comments held for moderation anymore. I foudn it here:
