- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3haha, no one is forcing you. use some self control
- DesignEx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3That is not the typed out version, it is simply a zoomed & cropped version of the original photos. I'm guessing it is for people who do not know how to use the 'zoom in'.
- Cheesehead3557, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2this is the transcribed version with only the first ten chapters as the article states:

- nigh7dagger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Seriously, if they have an award for hypocrites, it goes to the guy on Digg who accuses people of not having lives.
- walkingdogs, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7i am just wondering what's more pathetic. The people typing it off of photos or the person(s) who photographed every page.
- aadnk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Juging from the timestamps in the EXIF info, the photograph session only took 3 and 1/2 hours (rougly 30 seconds per image). That less than what it took to transcribe the images.
- SlappyMc, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I dont think they're sad or pathetic, I think they're doing us a favor.. thanks guys

- jasongdx, on 10/11/2007, -34/+116A real "fan" would 1) buy the book and 2) not infringe on it's copyright.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -15/+7Oh yeah? Why is that?
- GoodOldJacob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12This month J. K. Rowling was hoping to have a gold-plated shark tank bar installed right next to her pool, but thanks to people downloading her book for free, she must now wait a few months before he can afford it.
- theone3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm still buying the book - I need to put something on my bookshelf to prove I still read - and I have the other 6

- SkittlesUSA, on 10/11/2007, -14/+12I'm not a real "fan." I just want to know what happens before the real fans, and boast that I read the book a week before it came out.
- acetv, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3Someone PLEASE do something along the lines of Snape Kills Dumbledore.
- tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Sure. That's just another one of the many rumors. I'll know it when I read the book next week.
- ernasty10050, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Oh we are going to, don't you worry. I was thinking megaphone, and flyers on all the cars in the parking lot. All on camera.

- TopherT, on 10/11/2007, -7/+5The only thing that might make me buy the book is for the visceral feel of it. J.K. Rowling has plenty of money already. What, I'm supposed to feel bad for the publisher?
- bovox, on 10/11/2007, -11/+4You can't really expect a Digg user to respect intellectual property rights. They have no idea what IP is ... or they do know but are too cheap too care.
- cyclopsface, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Please don't use the term "intellectual property" - it implies ideas are like apples, either i get to eat it or you get to eat it. Ideas are not in fact like that.

- Detritus, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3I downloaded and have been reading the photos (quarter of the way through) because I am a real fan and I don't want it spoiled! I'm browsing digg right now with everything collapsed and a +10 or Higher because people kept trying to post spoilers.
Anti-Spoiler Alert: So far the spoilers that were posted Tuesday are wrong. - theholycow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I suspect most "real" fans, such as my wife, will buy the book even after reading the downloaded copy.
- gamche, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah if anything this is good publicity for the book because most versions of the download to my knowledge aren't complete and it will spur more people to buy the book especially if its good.

- drachemorder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Most people are only reading it because they CAN'T actually buy the book yet. I have no problem whatsoever with this. If the publishers want to prevent it, then they can release the book sooner. I hate artificially created release dates that are meant to just build hype. Release the fricking thing as soon as it's ready.
- LittleDas, on 10/11/2007, -0/+55 minutes after I downloaded the book I went and ordered it, I figure karmically (is that a word?) it balances out.
- beatlenuttt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1^^ Detritus^^ you're right about Tuesday posted spoiler. On the spoiler on which side Snake was on, they made Snake out to be more of a politician. That made me mad- what a waste of time reading the series. If this is the true book, Snake turns out to be the closest thing to being pure evil or pure good that the book has.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm buying it because reading hundreds of thousands of words on a monitor that has to smooth and blur its fonts just to maintain legibility (LCD monitors) is no fun.

- sato, on 10/11/2007, -7/+17why not just use some character recognition software?
- TiMMY8765, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19the photos are too messy for OCR
- zombieball, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Haven't seen the photos myself but I have heard some are pretty bad. Like put in photoshop, sharpen, and turn to a negative just to make out words bad. Apparently the photographer's hands even covered some of the words up in the photos he took, so not too sure how accurate their story is going to be.
- JFetch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I touched it up, and turned it into a .cbr file. It was easier to read that way, but a few places are just too blurry.
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Because the guy who took the photos of the pages is an idiot. Could have done a much better job for very little extra effort. By using a scanner for instance
- elementfire, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1To get good scans, he'd have to spread the book. Considering it's a library copy, it'd be a dead giveaway if, on the first day of circulation, the book's spine is incredibly creased.
- jhshukla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1he could have bought it himself before it fell into "wrong" hands. in think that probably he did not have (1) scanner and/or (2) time and/or (3) storage.
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You think they have people going around checking the spines of copies in every library?

- vandy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2if there's one thing we've all learned from leaked photos it is this: either they are blurry, out of focus and taken on a camera phone or they're not real.
- rejoined, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8This is probably the best comment on the site about the hp fans transcribing the book from the photos:
By Indy Sandalwood: "Sounds like fun… think of it like a giant captcha project." - DNABeast, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6OCR software? Genius!!
I can't wait to read "Here Porter, The Deaf Lions Arrows". - EbilPhish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I tried OCR one one of the pages, came back as something like |-_ |- | | | - |
Unfortunately just about all OCR software is designed to process scanned images and carn't cope with the natural bend in the pages or removal of the surrounding around, like thats guys horrible carpet.
I assume he sneaked a digital camera into a warehouse/bookshop where he works. Its also a lot faster to take photos than use a scanner, even if the quality is crap. Still would have been nice if he held the camera a bit closer.
- idc5, on 10/11/2007, -11/+5I have never seen any movies nor read any of the books, and I plan to keep it that way.
- NumberFour, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13I'm just letting you know-- I'm not digging you down because you haven't read the books or seen the movies, it's because of the sheer uselessness of your comment.
- gmprunner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Even for a person who isn't a fan of Harry Potter, I've gotta say that seems a little drastic. You can't hate it that much if you've never even seen/read it, right?
- Jambi, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1Good for you. I've read part of one of the books, and I can tell you you're not missing a thing.
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2part of one of the books would make you an expert, that's true
- Reedan, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2I'm taking my ball and going home!!
- crowbar77, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5I'm just letting you know-- I'm digging you down because you haven't read the books or seen the movies,
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i understand why people feel that way. the characters are children, the stories seem juvenile, and at least the earlier books are somewhat more juvenile. but the themes progress, the story and characters get more complex. for me Harry Potter is a fantasy story on par with the original Star Wars and much better than Lord of the Rings (and I don't hate LOTR - I just think the books are overrated and not very well written). The movies are ok if you already like the story, but they aren't a good representation or replacement for the books.
- sakuraz, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2.......They've never heard of OCR?
- theholyraptor, on 04/07/2008, -0/+4the leaked book images are well beyond being OCR'd. I've had the leaked collection of jpegs for a couple days now. Crappy resolution, bad angle, pages aren't flat, and the jpeg compression adds to the mess.
- tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1How human-readable is it?
- VeganG, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Not very. It's that bad.
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1some of the pages are totally out of focus, the others you have to zoom in on and suffer squinting through jpg compression etc, but on the whole you could get through the book if you were determined
- tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1How human-readable is it?
- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Here's why they can't:

- AwakeningAZ, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Can they even do this in 2 days?
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Nah probably not, but that's not the point. The point is to have a digital version of the book
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8With enough people, no problem. Get 100 people to do 8 pages each, could have it done in a few hours
- duccodude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Yeah and we can outsource it to India.. you know... the works
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I forget the name of it, but doesn't Amazon.com have some sort of outsourcing service for exactly these sort of tasks?
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1only 26 chapters to go... get cracking you crazy kids.
- nipterink, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i think the real problem is that some pages are lost to the underworld and unrecoverable. this transcription seems like a waste of time for people that are obsessed with harry potter. whatever they can read and transcribe most people are fully capable of doing while they read it. there's no point waiting.
- chicoer2001, on 10/11/2007, -12/+2I read the first page of the first book and got bored. I cant understand what the fuss is about. And why would someone take so much time typing something up. Buy the ***** book.
- Danjamin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6How dare people have different taste in books than you? Chicoer2001 should be king of opinions.
- DangerMouse9, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1I was bored after the first word.
- ricree, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4They do get a lot better. I read the first one not long after it came out, and I also thought it was kind of boring. Eventually, I did get around to reading the rest and they definitely got better as the series went on.
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3if you have no context about the story, no investment in the characters, I can't imagine the final chapter of any story would be interesting
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2n/m now I see "first book"... but anyway it sounds to be like you just have a case of ADD
- bobtcat, on 10/11/2007, -2/+29I'm just... going to buy the book. Yeah.

Some people have obviously never heard of the law of Diminishing Returns...- DiggsOnlyNeoCon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Others don't understand what the law of diminishing returns is...
- ICSU, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Seriously curtvdh, I have no idea what you meant (Golden rule...?), but it's not diminishing returns.
- Zaeyde, on 10/11/2007, -8/+8I read the entire thing from the images. Took me 12 hours.
I'm still gonna go buy the book, but now I won't have people ruining it for me.
Personally, I prefer the images. For one, it's more of a real feel of reading the book. For two, the poor quality doesn't make me feel as much of a slimy thief.
...And I don't know if I want to read a bunch of chapters hastily typed, complete with typos, miscapitalizations, and possible improvisations.
But the book was good.- Nick22, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9you sir, are sad
- over9, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18What they don't know is that the photographer forgot to remove the meta data from his photos which means he can be traced.
http://www.digg.com/offbeat_news/Harry_Potter_Leaker_Forgets_to_Remove_EXIF_Data_from_Photos_PIC- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Unless he bought it with cash and didn't register it. Or someone bought it second hand. Or lost it. Or had it stolen. Etc etc.
- devoss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Unless he posted photos taken by the same camera to his MySpace page, in which case they can trace the camera right to him/her. Come on guys, think about this just for a few seconds at least. I bet the publisher is trolling the Internet as we speak looking for this serial number in the exif data of photos.
- graemee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It was Some guy who lives @ 0001 Cemetery Ridge, Thing T. Thing
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Unless he bought it with cash and didn't register it. Or someone bought it second hand. Or lost it. Or had it stolen. Etc etc.
- foolfromhell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I read the last sentence and I spoiled part of the book.
I hate myself...
Good luck to those transcribers... they will ruin the book if they only transcribe a few pages... - JordanM85, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Maybe if this was a month ago.... but why bother now?
- jhshukla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1to show that they can?
- crowbar77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I've seen the PDF version and the way the pages were folded back you can't even see the words in the center of the book.
- over9, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1the PDF version you saw was most likely a fan fiction.
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Nah it's the same as the photos, just in a PDF file

- Archos, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4J.K. Rowling refuses to release an e-book version of Harry Potter, so as with the previous books, HP fans create a pdf file of Deathly Hallows. Rowling might have earned more money if she released it herself.
- Danjamin, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3yep the 5 ***** people who use ebooks would certainly buy it instead of pirating. You know much better than publishers and authors who have been in the business for years.
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1As far as i'm concerned ebooks are now better than normal books in every way - and they are the future. Paper books are going to go the way of records, tapes, VHS, and CDs. Once you've tried out one of the new E Ink devices you'll understand. But even on a laptop or a PDA ebooks can be way more convenient compared to heavy hardcover copies - it's a matter of being able to carry less. I preordered Harry Potter, but I don't plan on reading much of it in hardcopy format
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2You're really trying to compare a format (books) that has been around around for thousands of years to storage technology with tiny lifespans?
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1books have been around for thousands of years, but not always in the same format. they used to use parchment or papyrus before they had paper.
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1not to mention they were once hand written, not printed. then they were printed in small editions by hand. now they are printed by computerized machinery from digital files. it's only a matter of time before we eliminate the analog stage.
- smokewater, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Yeah, it's like trying to compare rubbing two sticks together to light a fire, to using new lighters with tiny lifespans. Obviously using two sticks is the way to go.
- ICSU, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1thousands of years?
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Haha, 5 ***** people who use ebooks. When you have a Palm, Pocket PC, laptop, etc, ebooks sure as hell come handy.
Seriously, you are ***** moron. - g30ph, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2well I dunno about buying the e-book, but If I see Deathly Hallows on Audible.com before I see it for free on a torrent site or nzb site, i'll buy it.
- Velirno, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3ebooks are super convenient, tho now I wish I could find a reader for my DS. I read all of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series on there and it wasn't bad.

- Xoherent, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Look, I sympathize with creating an e-book version of the Deathly Hallows, but why the rush to do it before it even comes out? It's the 18th today, it comes out on the 21st! Just wait three bleepin days and read it then.
However, it would be neat to have an e-book version of it for future re-readings. I always tend to lose the original book after the first reading, and then I have to go buy it used later on. - DeFex, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6if they are such big fans, why are they trying to rip off the author?
- drachemorder, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6They probably aren't. I'm sure 95% of them are planning to buy the book anyway. They're only circumventing the artifically enforced release date.

- yankeesfan, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3The leaks are of fake versions of the book, anyway. I am going to laugh when the publishing company takes responsibility for the fake leaks and every one of the people who proclaim and brag that they read the "real version" recant.
- ricree, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Unless the publishing company decided to write a complete second version of the book (and a fairly good version at that), then the photographed one is real.
- getupandgo712, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0I'd bet my butt they packaged the fanfic one.
And if that ends up being true.. I thinks its brilliant.- unknownpoltroon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It could be, but i read it and i was quite happy with the story. It doesn't feel like a fanfic. For instance, theres no Ron/Hagrid/Snape orgy with a petrified house elf.
- getupandgo712, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0I'd bet my butt they packaged the fanfic one.
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I'm going to laugh at you when I get the book and see that it is exactly the same as the photos. Some people are just in denial.

- g30ph, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1There can be only ONE!
- infiNex, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1That is sooo lame.
- liRising, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Ahhhh...Harry Potter and the leaked ending!
It's real since even the Reuters newscaster read the PDF and knows who dies (jokingly bleeped out in a short clip) http://www.reuters.com/news/video/videoStory?videoId=61051
The PDF advance copy was photographed on every page even though the quality of the photos is questionable on some pages. Here is the exact link to the torrent: http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3745874/Harry_Potter_-_The_Deathly_Hallows%5BPDF%5DGM0
Beware though, Author J.K. Rowling appealed to fans by saying "I'd like to ask everyone who calls themselves a Potter fan to help preserve the secrecy of the plot for all those who are looking forward to reading the book at the same time on publication day," she wrote on her Web site, www.jkrowling.com. "In a very short time you will know EVERYTHING!"
You're choice though ;-)- bmnow3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"Darth Vader is Harry father..." Seriously, that dumb ass so called report needs to STFU with her damned puns.
- RobertS44, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2Too bad I am already on chapter 12 on the photo-versions so this will be of no help to me. Really interesting stuff. Oh, and everyone dies.
- igloo15, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Don't lie I finished it earlier today and no where near everyone dies especially not by chapter 12. Personally the book sucked until about chapter 20 IMO
- RobertS44, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1The everyone dies part was just sarcasm as everyone is saying "X person dies". lol... Thought people would catch the sarcasm in it.
- igloo15, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Don't lie I finished it earlier today and no where near everyone dies especially not by chapter 12. Personally the book sucked until about chapter 20 IMO
- igloo15, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Its real I mean one of the distributers in the US accidentally shipped off the book to some people and thats how it got out to people. Personally I already pre-ordered but I read it just so I wouldn't get spoiled on digg or some other site in the coming days.
- Hangender, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Awsum, good for casual peeps who otherwise just want to get into what the Harry Potter buzz is about.
- xenoguy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1i think a pdf version was available on the newsgroups a month ago. im not sure why anyone is bothering with this a few days before release. their time would be better spent... going outside maybe?
- potterboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Except that was a fanmade fake.
- Slayerdude51982, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0first of all, to agree with what someone else said...you got 2 days..I don't think it will happen by then. Secondly just buy the f'n book, really. It really annoys me that someone has to do this kinda crap, I'm glad I'm not going to a midnight release, for two reasons one I have to be to work mad early saturday, but also in fear of another 'snape kills dumbledore' fiasco of Half Blood Prince. I'm more nervous for someone saying something about the ending of this book than any of the others. I will kill anyone who spoils this book for me.
- timewaster, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Hahaha. I wouldn't of thought that this would make it to Digg. Hahaha
I am quite disappointed at how Diggers can be so hypocritical and say others are waisting their time. Those transcribers are actually doing us a great service. They got a head start on the eBook.
What is there to do on the internet besides infringe copyrights? Is it okay when it's music and it's too much when a leaked book is spread like AIDS in Africa?
And as for the leaker, he is a legend so STFU.- Theisos, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0In Soviet America, dick sucks YOU!!
- DesignEx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Couldn't agree more. These people are working so that WE can have a readable version a few days early, and they should be applauded for that.
- vandy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I don't even care what comments people have against "fanboys", this is just freaking sweet. This is bootleg to the core, renaissance style.
- Theisos, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0In Soviet Russia, author steals from YOU!!
- 0crabby0, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9Spoiler alert!
Professor Sprout dies (from Mandrake rot)
Professor Lupine becomes a were-cat, and marries Mrs. Norris(Filch's cat).
Filch becomes the head of Hogwarts and is the real heir of Slytherin.
Harry gets kicked out of Gryffindor - Joins Digg, and is promptly banned for making discouraging remarks about Voldemort's blog.
lol - JamJosh, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Hahaha now all the Harry Potter fans over 16 have to grow up and get a life. I think it's hilarious that J.K. is saying all "real" fans won't ruin the plot so she can earn another $billion. Some one please leak the ending so I can ruin it for people that want to get it at the midnight release. I no longer feel remorse for people who spoil books after I read the description of "Ender's Game" on Amazon.com which clearly ruins the whole book which is like 100x better than Harry "butthole" Potter.
- FinalFlash, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Just imagine for a second that it's J.K. Rowling's plan to leak a "real version" of the book a few days before its release so that everyone would try and read it. It could just be a fanfic and everone is already shouting out loud "X person dies at X page". That would be the cleverest thing ever and everyone who read that copy would be totally screwed! It would be just fantastic!
- FinalFlash, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1A comment from a website : " The last page there shown is page 759. I have it on authority that there are 784 pages in Harry Potter"
Credit to anon4this- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1that means nothing. page count is not based on numbered pages - table of contents, title page, and even those blank pages in the back also count - if you count all of those it is very close to 784
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Clever, but much more likely the book actually leaked. I see no reason why it wouldn't have - boxes of books have been delivered all over the country to stores and libraries. And from the news I've been reading the book is in the hands of many people already. The NYT already put up a review today of a copy they got from some anonymous source. Do you really think the publisher would have wanted the NYT to get a copy of a fanfic for review?
- FinalFlash, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1A comment from a website : " The last page there shown is page 759. I have it on authority that there are 784 pages in Harry Potter"
- ncraig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The PDF from Pirate Bay does not match up with the pictures that leaked, even the chapter names are wrong.
- potterboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's not the right PDF. thats the old fake pdf.
- WootZoot, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Silly question, how do i get a torrent to work on a Mac?

- MakinBacon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Simple:
If you're a fan... support the author and buy the book.
If you're not... you won't want to read it anyways. - phampants, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0http://phampants.wordpress.com/2007/07/18/harry-potter-the-spoiler-study-pt-1/
- crimsoncircle, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1It.is.not.the.real.thing
Either J.K has gotten ***** with her writing or it's a fake, i'm inclined to call it a fake. How hard do you think it would be to print off your fan story, bind it and take photos of it compared to stealing a copy that could have you in jail?- lhnz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I hope a digg article springs up when the real book comes out and it is the "fake" we have now to point and laugh at people like you.
- elementfire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It wasn't fake. Can we point and laugh at you now?
- lhnz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I hope a digg article springs up when the real book comes out and it is the "fake" we have now to point and laugh at people like you.
