- sexybobo, on 06/05/2009, -1/+76They recently passed a law in missouri saying any one in public office stops getting paid after they get fired or get put in jail.
I though it was a silly law at the time now i know why they passed it. - Llanowar, on 06/06/2009, -2/+27Besides the obvious wrongness of this story...
Why would we continue paying anyone for life anyway after he quits his job for "mental instability and alcoholism".
Why would we pay him for his own failings? If only it was that easy for everyone, ***** up your life then you can get paid while sitting at home. - netneutrality, on 06/06/2009, -5/+28Social journalism: Where starting your article with "WTF?" apparently makes it more important.
- inactive, on 06/06/2009, -0/+21Go directly to jail do not pass go, do not collect 200$.
- kashk5, on 06/06/2009, -0/+11No, judges are appointed for life, you need to impeach them to remove them
- InfiniteNothing, on 06/06/2009, -0/+9That's clearly the biggest flaw in this situation. You should instantly lose your job as a judge for a felony.
- kashk5, on 06/06/2009, -0/+9One would have thought that such laws would have been on the books for quite some time now
- satman33, on 06/06/2009, -0/+8Umm.. if you read the article , it's the judge facing impeachment...I think that is what Tony the terrible was referring to.
- inactive, on 06/06/2009, -1/+9motion denied douche bag.
- inactive, on 06/06/2009, -0/+7Here is a similar scenario that would be more touchy....what if he HAD retired and was receiving pension? Should that stop? After all, pensions are not magically free money for retirement. Workers pay into pension funds. So it is really just their own money they are getting back. Taking it away would be cruel and unusual punishment for more crimes. Excessive fines.
- thenativeraver, on 06/06/2009, -0/+4obviously you didn't.
- maz2331, on 06/06/2009, -0/+4The Constitution says "The judges, both of the supreme and inferior courts, shall hold their offices during good behaviour, and shall, at stated times, receive for their services, a compensation, which shall not be diminished during their continuance in office."
Congress needs to quit screwing around and just impeach this guy, otherwise he will collect his salary. - cam0man, on 06/06/2009, -2/+5why? the lawmakers are the ones that want to collect the salary while in prison...so why would they pass it?
- Toadette, on 06/06/2009, -0/+3It's easy to judge people with problems when you don't have them yourself.
Rather then complain about how much other people are ***** up, why not count your blessings and be thankful that you don't have mental instability or deep-seeding psychological problems that drive you to drink to excess. People who do are not living it up by any means, and are probably some of the most loneliest people.
A little empathy never hurt anyone. - the3dolla, on 06/06/2009, -0/+3Uhhh, no.. He said "Could Pres OBAMA relieve him" meaning can Obama give him the boot quick, like it should happen.
- 0tis, on 06/06/2009, -2/+5"The 5th Circuit disagreed, however, stating that the criminal investigation and public shame contributed to his inability to perform his judicial duties, not the "mental instability" and alcoholism cited by Kent."
This is why he quit his job. Are you really saying that if he was actually "mentally unstable", it would be his fault? The same goes for alcoholism. Alcoholism more often than not is the result of some kind of psychological issue which is causing the person to drink.
If the judge had actually quit his job for those reasons, and because he acknowledged that he had these problems and considered himself unfit to serve, I would have a lot more respect for him. After all, it's better than having those problems and still continuing to do a job you are not mentally or physically capable of. - MtheoryX, on 06/06/2009, -0/+2"WAS" a judge
- govtdoesnotwork, on 06/06/2009, -0/+2IN, lifetime appointment is a double edged sword. Yes, in this instance it is obviously bad, but you want a Federal Judge, as the representative of a coequal branch of the government, to be able to say "***** you," and nothing like a lifetime appointment gets that effect.
- inactive, on 06/06/2009, -1/+2This judge should be able to have free soap on a rope and tossed salad for life.
- inactive, on 06/06/2009, -0/+1"a" judge.
- Llanowar, on 06/06/2009, -2/+3I know they disagreed, but it even being possible is utterly ridicilous.
Mentally unstable might not have been his fault, mentally unstable because of alcoholism would be.
I can't see I feel sorry for alcoholics. No matter what the reason, it's a weakness. Just like any other addiction. Should that mean that I can get addicted to gaming so badly that it ***** up my life so that I can quite my job and still get paid?
How about those millions of fat people who are basically addicted to food? Can they just quit their jobs and expect to continue getting paid?
No, to each their own, and I'm not for caring what the reason of one's addiction is. But it does not deserve a continuation of payment. - inactive, on 06/06/2009, -2/+3I'm physically disabled when it comes to dunking a basketball. Should the Lakers pay me because it's not my fault?
- thecatcantalk, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1
Hey, at least he'll have a roomy place to stash his cash by the time he's released. - Trick07, on 06/10/2009, -0/+1I can't believe how incredibly stupid you are. How you managed to even turn on your computer amazes me.
- vogelshock, on 06/06/2009, -0/+1Wow. The most uncontroversial article of all time ends up on the front page of Digg. The convicted Judge tried to claim a loophole to collect his yearly salary and the 5th Circuit shot him down. Everyone agrees that the Judge should be impeached, and that's what Congress says it will probably do.
EVERYONE PANIC! - AraleNorimaki, on 06/06/2009, -0/+1Oh, let me guess. Another box with a crank that I turn and turn and turn until... whoo... a clown pops out. Then you laugh, the kids laugh, the dog laughs, and I die a little more inside.
- tearor, on 06/07/2009, -0/+1Your Social Security stops when you are incarcerated
- AaronCo, on 06/06/2009, -0/+1From the lawyer's prospective tho this makes perfect sense. He can continue trying to collect the salary, using it as a bargaining chip to prevent an embarrassing impeachment trial. They start impeachment to stop him, he can then meet with them behind closed doors and negotiate a binding settlement.
- kefkaantakrist, on 06/06/2009, -3/+3Alcoholism is a disease. Drinking too much alcohol is not a disease. Alcoholism != drinking too much alcohol, though drinking too much alcohol is a symptom of alcoholism.
Kinda like diarrhea is a symptom of a stomach bug, but it also might just be from all that Mexican food you ate. - craigpemberton, on 06/06/2009, -0/+0Does nobody understand what "begging the question" is?
- InfiniteNothing, on 06/06/2009, -2/+1I wasn't aware swearing was a felony
- CoD4, on 06/06/2009, -3/+1Well he IS the judge, if you know what i mean
- TonyTheTerrible, on 06/06/2009, -6/+3could president obama relieve him of his duties before an impeachment?
- bigbadgoat, on 06/06/2009, -11/+5You're telling me you think Obama is going to get impeached after EIGHT YEARS of Bush?
You're insane. - dirtmaster, on 06/06/2009, -11/+4read title
