The patriotic flag burning (P&T magic trick) watch!
5min.com — It's amazing how you can get away with some stuff. Flag burning (which is a crime in some places) can be easily done in front of a captive audience if you do it while making a patriotic speech.

- Avrumales, on 05/20/2008, -3/+146Penn & Teller are never less than awesome.
You can agree or disagree with what they say, but they're always make you laugh or go "wow".
However, using other digg articles to promote your own, that is lame.- rspeed, on 05/20/2008, -0/+13And if you ever find yourself in Vegas, try to pry your ass away from the blackjack tables and titty bars and go to the Rio for a few hours to see their show. It's worth every penny. The fact that they show you how most of the tricks are done is the best part. Wait, no. Firing live ammunition directly at each others' face is the best part. I still can't figure that one out.

I did the work for you: http://www.foreworks.com/bullet2.html
Read it if you want, but it will take away a lot of the "magic" that makes the trick so much fun to watch.- rspeed, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Revealing the trick doesn't ruin the trick for me. I already know it's not real, so there's no illusion that's destroyed. Penn and Teller are masters at making the act of revealing the trick even more entertaining than the trick itself. Don't believe me? Watch their version of the cup and balls trick.

- rolf, on 05/20/2008, -1/+5And while we are digging this up, do our fellow diggers recognize that we may vote someone into the White House who would not allow us this aspect of Freedom of Speech? He wants to not only bypass mending the Constitution for this and admits it, but thinks a law banning flag burning is enough.
"I support legislation introduced by Senator Durbin that makes it illegal to burn the flag without changing the Constitution."
http://obama.senate.gov/press/060627-obama_stateme ...- Perceive, on 05/20/2008, -2/+3Did you actually read your own link or understood what it meant? First of all, no law can bypass the US Constitution, only an amendment can change it. A law is much easier to get rid of than an amendment. In 2006, when Richard Durbin, proposed his law, the US Senate came one vote short of approving an amendment to ban flag burning (which the House already passed). Durbin's proposal was a compromise, a last ditch effort to prevent Congress from amending the Constitution to restrict rights. He, and supporters of the bill, which by the way included both Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama, were hoping that with the bill on the table, the Senate would be less inclined to approve the flag-burning amendment. As it was, the Senate came one vote short of approving the amendment, and rejected Durbin's law too as most didn't think it went far enough. Durbin's bill would only criminalize flag-burning when it's done to threaten or incite violence. And it could be invalidated by the courts or by another session of congress. Obama, Clinton, Durbin, and 31 other senators were a courageous minority that refused to vote for a Constitutional amendment to ban flag-burning (McCain voted for it, FYI). To discount their work in averting the oppressive amendment, to twist it around into the opposite, is ridiculous and ignorant.
- rolf, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1Look, I'm not pro-McCain (I'm not voting for him either), but that press release by Obama or his staff says nothing about protecting Free Speech but the tone seems completely against allowing Flag burning.
I don't believe passing unconstitutional laws is "not playing politics". - senatorpjt, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Any law can bypass the US Constitution.
"Any person who, in or affecting interstate commerce, burns a flag, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both."
Flags are produced in multiple states, therefore the flag had to be purchased either from another state, or if it was purchased locally, affects the market for flags because it takes the place of a flag which would have otherwise had to be brought in from another state. Therefore, burning a flag is interstate commerce.
Sounds ridiculous, but it's the exact same rationale used to justify the Controlled Substances Act. (see Gonzales v. Raich).
- rolf, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1Look, I'm not pro-McCain (I'm not voting for him either), but that press release by Obama or his staff says nothing about protecting Free Speech but the tone seems completely against allowing Flag burning.

- withears, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2But they vote Democrat.
- Dystisis, on 05/20/2008, -4/+2"Libertarianism" (I assume you mean anarcho-capitalistm) is the most dangerous form of capitalism. They promote capitalist loose ideas of "freedom" (the freedom of owning factories and enslaving workers -- of course whose rights aren't considered -- with wages) without any framework regulating who this craze affects. In short, it means even more poverty, more unequal distribution of the goods, than there is now.
Of course, abolishing or restricting the government is a good thing in general. Luckily, the way technology is developing allowing goods to be produced for little or no cost (an obvious example to you guys would be filesharing) should also mean people would be getting things for free, right? Which would mean the entire wage system is doomed to topple over, luckily. However, obviously the people in charge, those who control the means of production, will not let that happen. They are what stands in the way of progress.- itsthebrod, on 05/20/2008, -2/+4If you think personal freedoms are "dangerous" then perhaps a move to China may be toward your (and everyone else's) advantage.
- Envark, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4Wages for voluntary labor is not the equivalent of enslaving workers.

- 47f0, on 05/20/2008, -0/+12No sir. What's disgusting is seeing how many false patriots value the symbol over the ideals it represents. That flag represents the freedom to dissent, to protest, even if it means burning the flag. Phony flag wavers who stand by idly while the constitution is gutted are disgusting. The symbol of the flag can never be more important than the freedom it stands for. You sir, fail at civics.

First to me personally that flag didn't look to old, torn, dirty etc but whatever (they didn't burn it)...
Next in order to burn a flag it needs to be done in a respectful manner (commonly at a color guard ceremony) compared to lighting it up in the street etc.
And no one should be going nuts over what they did so I agree with you - bobothn, on 05/20/2008, -4/+3It is recommended that it be burnt in a respectful manner. It is unrecommended that you don't let it hit the ground that you have light on it and that you take it in in bad weather. I think the point of this video was a celebration of the fact that those are recommendations not strict laws with heavy punishments like is some countries.
- boobsbr, on 05/20/2008, -2/+10do whatever you want with your flag, it's yours and it's a piece of cloth, not a sacred item delivered to you by god.
- Envark, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1No need to go all pro-life on us.

- VinceNoir, on 05/20/2008, -30/+1God. What a couple of tools. ***** libertarian trash. They stand for everything I despise about the lie of individuality. It's a sham. They're only into "individuality" when it serves their needs. And Penn is reminding me more and more of the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons. Bleh. Buried as more than lame.
- DarkReign16, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3WHAT????? Are you ***** insane....?
At any rate, please stop trolling. - KingMoses, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2You're right, individuality isn't about things like rights or liberty; individuality is what you find in the breadlines or in in the shared bathrooms with your comrades in your state-built apartment. I can't even come online to troll without seething from the evil greed of the capitalist pig dogs all over the place.
- VinceNoir, on 05/20/2008, -2/+1Shut the hell up you stinking commie. We destroyed scum like you back in the cold war. You'll never come back.
- thorstrongstone, on 05/20/2008, -2/+1Yeeeeaaahh, tell that to China, Cuba, and Vietnam.
- gerbco, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4read: Sarcasm.
- VinceNoir, on 05/20/2008, -2/+1The original poster made the idiotic assumption that since I'm opposed to libertarians I must be a [GASP!] Communist. Of course he fails to see that libertarians and communists are simply the opposite side of the same coin: two ideals that are easily thwarted by human selfishness and greed.

- mfc5200, on 05/20/2008, -0/+42Actually, the Chinese constitution does have a "bill of rights" so to speak, and freedom of speech is on there. The only problem is that there are clauses attached to it, such as "national security, integrity, maintaining social harmony etc". This explains why maintaining freedom of speech without any conditions is so essential, because it is a very slippery slope.
- hospitalcio, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3Best comment I have read in a while.
- userperson, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2True that!
... though constitutions and laws are all just promises made by gov't comprised of politicians, which generally gains more power by forgetting such things, maneuvering around them, or out-right ignoring them. - barnett25, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1That sounds a lot like the sorts of clauses that Bush has been adding to things as "signing statements". A scary thought...
- sleeknerve, on 05/20/2008, -7/+25min is just a scam to get traffic from Digg, people shouldnt Digg these videos
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1This was revealed months ago. They have numerous Digg accounts from which they submit and Digg their own stories.
- ahawks, on 05/20/2008, -6/+20When I watched this a long time ago, I found it really inspiring. I haven't done it, but I think burning a flag could be a very patriotic thing to do. Bear with me...
We Americans are the "free-est" people of the world. At least, we have been. We're in danger of losing those freedoms. For some reason, I feel like folding a flag up, saluting it, and burning it some how honors our freedom. It honors the fact that we CAN burn the flag. That we CAN disagree with our government. That we CAN change things. The day that liberty goes away is a sad day.
A flag is just a piece of cloth. A country is just a mass of land, but it's the political structure and philosophies that define us.- CA55IDY, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5Its not who we are, but what we do that defines us
- Batman- herrshuster, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1actually, rachel, but w/e

- evo8ftw, on 05/20/2008, -14/+1Wow diggers calm down. Penn is a conservative I'm sure it will be only a day until you claim he helped planed 9/11 and is now racking in big money from Iraq. I know how your pea size brains work.
- Maver1c, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2I guess you didnt see the episode of ***** where they covered 9/11 =)
- evo8ftw, on 05/20/2008, -3/+1Apparently you didn't!!! The ep was about how 9/11 truthers are Bull *****.
pwned- Maver1c, on 05/21/2008, -1/+1Um, i know...that's why it would be silly to claim that penn & teller would have anything at all to do with a 9/11 conspiracy theory.
- evo8ftw, on 05/20/2008, -3/+1Apparently you didn't!!! The ep was about how 9/11 truthers are Bull *****.

- MrSkrilla, on 05/20/2008, -3/+9that was so obvious, they really didn't need to explain it.
- gabbagabba, on 05/20/2008, -7/+1Burning a flag is like saying an anti-statist statement rather than an anti-governmental statement. The american Flag represents the United States Of America as a landmass and as the place in which americans live, it can be defined as anti-state activity which is prohibited by the constitution and therefore shouldn't be legal. Its not really a question of rights or anything because by burning an american flag you're saying that the United States shouldn't exist and you are refuting the very idea of belonging to a nation which regardless of how much you hate a government doesn't make much of a difference because you still belong to that nation. Its unconstitutional to burn a flag so therefore there shouldn't be any debate unless they want to make a change to the constitution which would probably put in question many issues of what is a nation and what is sovereignty which Academics view in many differing ways.
- kakwakas, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1So, you're saying that when governments change, flags never do? I mean, if it represents the landmass...
- bagelmaster, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Morons like you are eroding my rights. Please stop.
- TJATL, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2I'd rather fly the "Don't Tread On Me" flag, rather then the stars and stripes right now.
- awtripp, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1" The only definitive answer is found in the US Flag Code. TITLE 4 > CHAPTER 1 > Sec. 8(k). It states:
"The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning""
So, no it is not "unconstitutional" to burn the flag (when disposing of it.)
- byrdgang, on 05/20/2008, -0/+7This couldn't have been performed better.
- diggafrica, on 05/20/2008, -1/+6I think we should all start burning Flags, its a great way to demonstrate the freedom that american was founded upon, not the type the current administrations are using
- AlienMushroom, on 05/20/2008, -6/+3They can't win without bashing China which they never knew.
