- ghm101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+57Nabataeans built it
For reasons of control of trade and commerce in the region.
In 363 an earthquake destroyed the a critical water distribution system, that combined with a shift in trade routes to the sea lead to Petra being abandoned as no longer profitable or viable.
Cool place
of course I intuitively know all this stuff and never have to look up anything in wikipedia ;) - postitnote, on 10/12/2007, -3/+51Only the penitent man shall pass.

- Llaunje, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Muslims in the 7th to 19th century were actually tolerant people, particularly towards those they called "the people of the Book", ie Christians and Jews, who were accorded a special privileged status, compared to all the other religions that resided in their holdings.
Interestingly, the Sephardim people (Spanish Jews) enjoyed a prosperous life in Spain (=Sepharad) under Muslim ruled_ but were expelled as soon as the Catholic Kings took the city back.
Petra, as was quoted above, declined in Roman times.
Having problems with people's cultural mentality today is not a reason to malign anyone's history; the fact that a great majority of Muslim countries today are open to extremist violence is no reason to ignore their past tolerance. - kaph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Sort your browser out so this doesn't happen.....

- scoobyrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Petra was pretty cool...my wife and I went there about 2 years ago. Here is a little text from our journal of that day.
"We left for Petra at 5:45 a.m., both to miss the crowds of tourists as well as to miss the midday heat. The walk from the front gate to the top where the monastery is takes most people about 3 hours one way. We arrived just as daylight was appearing: there wasn’t even anyone at the gate to take our money, so we just went in. Half way though, we were getting tired and we knew that the 850 steps UP to the monastery was coming soon. So, we got a donkey ride the rest of the way (my donkey’s name was Michael Jackson). We have videos you can see of the donkey ride and the Treasury."
If you ever wonder what is inside the main Treasury, check out these two videos we took with our digital camera.

That is an interesting statement to make, especially seeing as Petra suffered the earthquake that finally forced it's abandonment in 363 CE, which was over 200 years before Muhammad was even born (570 CE). Nice try though, maybe next time you'll look things up before trying to revise history to fit your bigotry.

Its a underground city in the Country Georgia. Has over 6000 rooms. People lived in it for 100 years to be saved from the Mongols. - kutza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Follow the magic leoplurodon!

- kutza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Peter from the Bible's name translates into Petros. Aka, the name Peter is really Rocky, and God makes a pun of it in Matt.16:18 (And I say also unto thee, That thou art Rocky, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.). Same reason as comment above.
- ncsu1982, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4just a big open room, unless someone has taken out the armed guards and seen in further
- nasalspray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4nonzzero:
"Why has only 1/3 of it been explored?"
If the intent is anything like the exploration/excavation of Pompeii, there was a movement to leave some to future generations to explore. I don't know that to be fact in the case of Petra (which is an amazing place) but concerning Pompeii (equally amazing), though small excavations continue, much of the excavation work has ceased. - gmarks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Someone went crazy with a hammer and nail.
- jemmrich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4kinda looks like the place used in one of the Mortal Kombat movies where Raiden has to talk to the fire/water/air elements.
In any case, I would love to visit the place... looks amazing! - digdigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Unavailable web site is the 8th wonder of the world. It's everywhere, kind'a like Ausfahrt in Germany, but ever changing. It follows the digg mob.
- AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I went there as a kid, it is so amazing... there was graffiti from the 1910s i think in one of the carved out buildings and a perfectly preserved camel skeleton built into the rock
- peranadigital, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3because we no society in general is based on consumerism and not art. this stuff would take a long time and cost a lot of money. it's a shame.
- Jimmyinnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love the comment from Trevor in the comments section where he states that his great grandfather explored the place in 1812 and wrote a book. In EVERY comments section there's always somebody who's got to either start a flamewar or make some outrageous statement. If we accept that 35 years is a typical generation difference and Trevor's great grandfather was obviously an adult when he visited Petra then Trevor must be over 100 years old
