- Coven, on 05/19/2008, -2/+64That show angered me. They went on for an hour and a half about these mystical crystal skulls before they air a segment featuring a woman from the Smithsonian who takes one look under a microscope and says "This was cut using a diamond edged rotary tool, available in the late 1800s" while the skull she was examining had been "discovered" in the 1920s.
Thank you SciFi for making me sit through nearly an hour and a half before bringing on even one reputable interviewee that isn't going on and on about the "paranormal" powers these skulls supposedly have.
I mean, one guy was convinced these things have power because when viewed under IR the skulls warm up when touched by human hands.
*blank stare*
You read that right. Heat transfer has convinced this guy that these skulls have powers. By that logic my cup of water is going to prevent the end days as it warms in my hand. - BonhamsGhost, on 05/19/2008, -3/+50I love the whole idea of the Crystal Skulls and the legends that surround them, but in everything legitimate I've read about the subject (and contrary to this article) none of the ones tested in lab conditions showed anything but being created using modern (1800s+) tools.
Quote Wikipedia (and take that for what its worth)
"Contemporary mainstream scientific opinion is that the skulls are instead of 19th century European manufacture. None of the specimens made available for scientific study have been authenticated as pre-Columbian in origin" - Bukowsky, on 05/19/2008, -7/+40ok... those are pretty wicked.
- Calcularius, on 05/19/2008, -12/+43Carving quartz is NOT A BIG DEAL.
That crap about "against the grain" is *****.
Go on ebay right now and search for "quartz buddha" and you will see page after page of little statues carved out of quartz of all colors (also known as citrine, rose quartz, amythest, etc...) Comparing a little skull carved out of quartz to the pyramids of egypt or the nazca lines is a bit of stretch... or rather a WHOLE HOLY HELL of a stretch!
And they're magic? yeah, right. - twiztidsinz, on 05/19/2008, -2/+29Under these circumstances, experts believe that successfully crafting a shape as complex as the Mitchell-Hedges skull is impossible; as one HP researcher is said to have remarked, "The damned thing simply shouldn't be. ***** thing sucks, we'll do it live ***** it."
- alanocu, on 05/19/2008, -2/+27a lot of great photos here: http://flickriver.com/search/british+Crystal+Skull
- jboitnott, on 05/19/2008, -11/+29Some believe that the complexity of creating these skulls points to one of two things... an alien interaction with humans on this planet... or the existence of a great civilization such as Atlantis which now has apparently left only tiny traces of itself (if any at all it is wondered). Who the heck knows but they are damn cool to look at.
- soupdawg30, on 05/19/2008, -0/+14I have one. They are magic. I am 8000 years old.
- 180andback, on 05/19/2008, -5/+18They're not magical.
- benitojuarez, on 05/19/2008, -3/+14looks exactly like the crystal skulls from stargate sg-1
- rejectnation, on 05/19/2008, -5/+16Wait -- none of these looks like Alien skulls. What gives?

- buried for *****. - theuon, on 05/19/2008, -3/+13Skullduggery?
- BevansDesign, on 05/19/2008, -0/+9There was an episode of Skeptoid on this very topic just a couple weeks ago. Lots of good info there about the mythology behind the skulls and why they're not actually magic (shocking!). Read/listen: http://skeptoid.com/episodes/4098
- VitriolAndAngst, on 05/19/2008, -1/+10It COULD hold enormous amounts of data... if they had laser 3d imaging and materials science.
Or it COULD be just a crystal skull. - skittlestick, on 05/19/2008, -0/+9Did anybody else see the actually documentary on these last night? I've never heard more ***** in my life. 2 retarded 'scientists' + hype about new movie = magical crystal skulls! WOW! Give me some clear sand and a ***** blow dryer and I'll make you a god damn magical skull. You know what they used in ancient civilizations for worship? REAL ***** skulls. Why carve one when there's thousands just walking around? But Nope... aliens flew trillions of miles, planted magical skulls, and waiting for apes with brains to find them. Stupid.
- inactive, on 05/19/2008, -0/+9Contemporary mainstream scientific opinion is that the skulls are instead of 19th century European manufacture. None of the specimens made available for scientific study have been authenticated as pre-Columbian in origin.[1]

turn down volume, videographer is annoying - trogdor282, on 05/19/2008, -0/+8That is no coincience O'Neal, for the Pro'ducers visited your museums millenia ago.
- Srcc, on 05/19/2008, -1/+9No real archaeologist thinks these skulls are real. Pretty much all the evidence suggests that they were made in the mid 1800s using modern tools, and that selling them was rather profitable. If half the incredible stuff people claim about these skulls were real, wouldn't someone somewhere have verified it at some point? Maybe even just a little? Like most of these pseudo science things, it's just a sham.
-A former professional archaeologist - wwelch, on 05/19/2008, -1/+8Legends? Really?
The only information I've seen regarding these skulls are where/when they were supposedly discovered, where they are now, and then the plethora of claims doubting authenticity. I've never seen any actual Mayan or Aztec mythology referencing these things. In fact, I just spent a little time on Wikipedia's pages on Mayan and Aztec gods of death and underworlds and no mention of crystal skulls anywhere. (Human sacrifice, cannibalism and eye ball necklaces, sure. But no crystal skulls.)
Has anyone actually read any Mayan or Aztec mythology from a historical or cultural resource that references these crystal skulls? Or is just the current owners stirring the pot as they try to sell books and public appearances? - Niightwitch, on 05/19/2008, -2/+9"The exhausting job -- assuming it could possibly be done in this way -- would have required man-hours adding up to 300 years to complete."
It's one of two possible explanations: 1) They had a way of working with the crystal so that they could go against the grain and not shatter it, a process unknown today, even with lasers, or 2) They had help from someone else outside the human realm. - elhaf, on 05/19/2008, -0/+7FTFA:
'ET Skull
"ET" is a smoky quartz skull found in the early 20th Century in Central America. It was given its nickname because its pointed cranium and exaggerated overbite make it look like the skull of an alien being. ET is part of the private collection of Joke Van Dietan, who tours with her skulls to share the healing powers she believes they possess.'
Oh, right, no pictures, therefore it didn't happen. - haylel, on 05/19/2008, -0/+76 or 7 of these have been "discovered".
Unfortunately, the ones that the owners let be tested, have been dated to the late 19th century and aren't really what people claim them to be. :( - sindex, on 05/19/2008, -1/+8Not magical or alien in origin, but damn cool nonetheless.
Why can't we just be amazed at human ingenuity with resorting to the supernatural? - badjoke, on 05/19/2008, -0/+7Are digg comments getting dumber and dumber or is it just me?
- mydigglogin, on 05/19/2008, -1/+8Surprised?
I'm waiting for a show that will have John Edward and a medium from "Most Hunted" or something talk to a crystal skull that will tell the audience that Daeniken was right all along, and how to make money on real estate, eBay, and cash notes while cleansing your colon and curing cancer using food recipes from the Bible in the comfort of your home.
They could play it for 24 hrs straight. One show to rule them all. - supermanky, on 05/19/2008, -0/+6Skulls not ancient:
http://www.si.edu/opa/insideresearch/articles/V9_C ... - AmaDaden, on 05/19/2008, -0/+6You mean silicon. Silicone is used for boobies. Silicon is used for computers. All quartz is filled with silicon. Quartz is just a giant random structure of silicon and oxygen. Actually most types of crystals are. A different structure and ratio makes it a different type of crystal.
- RudeTurnip, on 05/19/2008, -1/+7Yeah, but they were able to show you a lot of commercials, which was the whole point.
- gotrootdude, on 05/19/2008, -0/+6 Dang, I made my skull out of wood. No wonder I couldn't get it to do anything. Must get crystal.
- SpinningHead, on 05/19/2008, -1/+7Those are 2 unscientific choices posed by those that want to believe. They've been tested and were made by 19th century tools. this is like the Shroud of Turin. Its been disproved, but people still want something magical to cling to.

- JasonCox, on 05/19/2008, -2/+7Buried as inaccurate; everyone knows that the crystal skull is located on P7X-377, not Earth.
(fyi, I didn't really bury it) - cyborg, on 05/19/2008, -1/+6What...? No IWHBYD skull? No Grunt Birthday Party skull? what gives?
- diggopolous, on 05/19/2008, -4/+8Yeah and I heard that there is a real bridge that connects Manhattan and Brooklyn for sale.
I aint buying either thank you very much - AaronSTL, on 05/19/2008, -2/+6pwn3d...sorry believers.

- damnyooneek, on 05/19/2008, -2/+6was flipping channels and saw some pseudo-documentary about this on sci fi they were saying something about the world will end 2012 if the skulls aren't reunited. i guess we'll see
- inactive, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4True but they have already been debunked...
its a modern mythology - too bad not like the other Indy movies where it actually had older mythological finds. - 180andback, on 05/19/2008, -0/+4Freshest use of the meme today.

- 180andback, on 05/19/2008, -0/+3It's not the Mayan calendar I'm concerned about. It doesn't end until 2012. It's that Gregorian calendar you have to worry about... it ends on December 31st of THIS YEAR!
