- badqat, on 06/07/2009, -14/+369The kid sounds really bright, and his points are quite lucid and intelligent. And he has tremendous stones...
Bravo! - genezorz, on 06/07/2009, -8/+294This guy obviously feels passionately about this. Smoking pot since you were 12 is probably a bad thing, but he feels strongly and he had a really successful peaceful protest that got a ton of people talking.
This dude cares about the USA's policy and he's willing to peacefully protest a law he disagrees with. That's the essence of democracy. Those of us in America should be so lucky to see protest taken seriously again.
Wait did i just say that an underage kid smoking pot at school was good for America? Well I'm ***** now. - Dinsdale77, on 06/07/2009, -8/+235It's gonna take ballsy moves like this to get it legal.
- jmo1687, on 06/07/2009, -11/+217A+++++++ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED STUDENT!
- TaylorSPL, on 06/07/2009, -5/+170At least he's 17 = no adult record. Bravo.
Does anyone know if he has posted the paper online yet? - jonnybreakbeat, on 06/07/2009, -2/+155"Barry, who has a 3.7 grade-point average, stressed that he took the assignment seriously. In fact, what was supposed to be a two-page paper turned into 15 pages."
We need more intelligent marijuana users like Ian to show how this plant doesn't cause stupidity or laziness in all people. In fact, it can drive some of its users to aim even higher in their goals than most non- users! Marijuana's negative stigma is a symbol of a stereotype blown completely out of proportion which should be remedied now! - Tddupre, on 06/07/2009, -6/+147This kid is getting laid
- TheNyquilKid, on 06/07/2009, -4/+118At first I felt he was a dumb ass too, but now I'm leaning toward smart kid, he knew what he was doing, he knew what the punishment would be, and was willing to take it. He knew the over reaction would news stories would follow proving his point that the only harm cannabis causes is from the over reaction to it.
I wouldn't have done it, I don't encourage it, I think he put his future is far too much danger for it to be worth it, but I can respect him for having the balls to do it. I don't know if he gets graded on this speech, but if he does he damn sure better get an A. - fanfablebig, on 06/07/2009, -4/+106Now I feel like a pussy for smoking behind the gym.
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -1/+102Hot damn, gotta give him props on his outstanding use of civil disobedience. I went to a hippie-dippy liberal arts college, and the radicals there seemed to think that civil disobedience was simply breaking the law to draw attention to yourself (so, for instance, blocking traffic to protest the Iraq war). But no, this is a proper usage of the philosophy, breaking a law specifically to demonstrate the absurdity of said law. If more people did this, I think we'd make some progress on marijuana legalization.
- highlymodified, on 06/07/2009, -9/+109Hey Ian Barry,
If you're ever in Michigan, I'll smoke you down.
+ Respect,
highlymodified - Sheepsterbaby, on 06/07/2009, -4/+95this, he probably gets more ass then a toilet seat.
- Boogalou007, on 06/07/2009, -9/+96"Barry, who has a ___3.7 GRADE POINT AVERAGE___, stressed that he took the assignment seriously"
I hope they really throw the book at this degenerate. He obviously has nothing good to contribute to society. Hopefully this marijuana nonsense goes away so that good honest cops can go back to tazing random people that look at them funny.
On a serious note, that kid has brass balls. Bravo! - Briandrews15, on 06/07/2009, -7/+92"It is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong." ~Voltaire
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -3/+84As someone stoned this very second, I think what this kid represents is far greater than lighting up in class; it's the essence of revolution. You see the grass roots movement taking rise - but it always operates within the confines of the legal structure our government has imposed on us. We didn't have a ***** tea party, we had an entirely legal circle jerk that made us feel as if we were apart of something. THIS KID IS. He's willing to do TRULY revolt and pay the price for his action. the rest of us are talk, this kid is the man.
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -3/+82Dugg for awesome, but I reserve the right to undigg if it is discovered that he was smoking schwag.
- johndatserakis, on 06/07/2009, -2/+70WILL SMOKE WITH AGAIN
- damntourists, on 06/07/2009, -1/+57i feel a little uncomfortable. not because of marijuana, but about the large sums of these digg members talking about this boy's balls.
- alapoet, on 06/07/2009, -10/+62Yeah... and old Henry Thoreau was a dumb ass for writing "Civil Disobedience," too, right?
- Zapple, on 06/07/2009, -2/+45SLOW SHIPPING, UNDERSTANDABLE. A++++
- MarkCiccone, on 06/07/2009, -1/+43The joint was a good touch to the speech. It got people's attention and opened the dialogue. This kid has a 3.7 GPA, clearly it isn't harming him. Good luck at college and keep fighting for what you believe in!
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -3/+45ok I don't like to admit it but this is a little epic. It takes a manly mans set of stones to do something like this.
- TaylorSPL, on 06/07/2009, -4/+46Yes a bunch of high school kids with 3.7 GPAs, who participate in extra curricular activities.
- sarchosis, on 06/07/2009, -2/+38As much as I love that he did this, you have to admit that even when marijuana is legal it still won't be okay for a teenager to light up a joint in high school.
- newbyx86, on 06/07/2009, -5/+40Rosa Parks defied the law when she sat down at the front of that bus. And she knew exactly what she was doing, too.
And look where we are today. That's hope. That's proof that some things are backwards and the law doesn't act in the interest of the people all the time.
It's still a shame that if it is legalized, his actions would still be illegal (smoking under 18 == not very likely) but hey, he made his point. - mouseshoes, on 06/07/2009, -1/+35Dugg for grass roots movement
- WiretapStudios, on 06/07/2009, -1/+34Dugg for coherent stoned paragraph...
- RenoKb, on 06/07/2009, -4/+37The comparison is valid in this context (both broke the law, both knew what would happen as a consequence); you're only reading his comment in a sensationalist's way while putting words in his mouth. It's only insulting when viewed with your added rhetoric.
/probably trolled but what the hell - giyad, on 06/07/2009, -3/+35even a 17 year old is smarter than the government...
- awesinine, on 07/15/2009, -3/+35you're an idiot locdogg
- kemp34, on 06/07/2009, -0/+32You only know idiots who happen to be potheads then. Not the brainiacs who happen to enjoy pot.
- LucasJ218, on 06/07/2009, -2/+33Are you retarded? In most schools across the States, 4.0 would be straight A's.
- KarateMedia, on 06/07/2009, -1/+29@locdogg - Damn! I knew my high school English teacher was wasting our time when he made us read Thoreau! Slavery had been abolished many, many years prior, and clearly there was nothing else to learn from the man, since his writing was in no way applicable to any other circumstance one might encounter.
- kemp34, on 06/07/2009, -0/+27locdogg you hurt the overall act of calling out true bigots with your insane claims in this thread.
- vicsvenge, on 06/07/2009, -2/+29ever had a drink of alcohol? because if you haven't, then by all means, spout your ignorant ***** all day long. But if you have. Then you sir are a damn hypocrite and a cancer to this country.
- sluggermoore, on 06/07/2009, -4/+30This kid has balls and brains. I hope he does go into politics.
- LemonMachete, on 06/07/2009, -3/+26@locdogg
No, he's pointing out the fact that refusing to abide by an injust law is an effective and legitimate form of protest. Whether that law pertains to slavery or the banning of a relatively harmless substance that causes the imprisonment of nearly a million Americans every year for a completely non-violent and victimless 'crime' is irrelevant.
Just because you're too ***** stupid to understand his point doesn't make him a bigot or a racist. In fact, calling him those words makes you look like a giant prick. - delusionz, on 06/07/2009, -2/+25Imagine a world where marijuana is as freely available as cigarettes?? That would be great at least people wouldn't be dying. Seriously try it before you talk your *****.
- novice99, on 06/07/2009, -2/+25it's not spectacularly hard to be smarter than the government
- KarateMedia, on 06/07/2009, -2/+25I think this kid is great, particularly since he's man enough to take the consequences, but these two lines made me laugh:
"Then, before he turned to the eighth page, he pulled out the joint that was hidden in his dreadlocks."
"His first college of choice: 'California, probably Humboldt'"
Smart kid, but also apparently the most stereotypical stoner kid straight out of central casting... - sevenalive, on 06/07/2009, -0/+22pfff. if he wasn't smoking pot he would have a 4.0!
/sarcasm - Shazbuckle, on 06/07/2009, -1/+23If he hadn't, we wouldn't have heard about it.
And I'm all the way in Ireland - wild, on 06/07/2009, -3/+24Every 17 year old thinks they are smarter than the government...
- twiztidsinz, on 06/07/2009, -3/+24Yeah... It's ***** how a hot-topic issue is finally getting coverage and becoming a common topic in media discussion.
- charlie6969, on 06/07/2009, -2/+22There is also a Quaker Maxim; Truth to Power.
He knew he would get in trouble but felt it needed to be said. - WiretapStudios, on 06/07/2009, -1/+20EXCELLENT COMMUNICATION
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -2/+21You have, you just didn't know it.
- marcb83, on 06/07/2009, -5/+24Pot should be legal, but kids still should not be using it, especially at school.
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -5/+23This kid is a freakin' hero if you ask me. If more people are willing to stand up like he did the day will come when no one will have to.
- JulyZerg, on 06/07/2009, -1/+18Yeah, a world where Marijuana was as freely available as cigarettes... would not nearly be as unhealthy as a world where cigarettes are as easy to get as they are today.
