    • SugarCoatedBomb, on 05/25/2008, -0/+6After visiting a rose farm in Ecuador last winter I can definitely say its real, but I never saw one with such drastically different colors. The ones I saw were a mix between orange and yellow or something.
      The way they are made are usually by random mutations, however it often depends on how well a rose can survive the journey to its final destination when deciding on whether to mass breed it or not. Many roses aren't able to survive for very long, so the farm has to let it die.

      Also, many of the roses at the farm did not have any smell. The nice smelling traits are sometimes sacrificed for survivability traits. But they did have some roses that randomly developed really interesting smells for roses like lemon or perfume.

Getting two colour roses is quite hard iirc, as you need to manage to combine two recessive phenotypes to get the result (long time since I've done any Biology). This takes a lot of work to do by breeding. There is always genetic engineering, however.

      for those who asked if the hybrids are fragrant - yes. i don't remember if it was the same mix of colors but one of them smelled like pez candy. and it ruled.
