- Aliendude, on 07/23/2008, -2/+73The effect is explained by the opponent processing theory of color vision. It basically says there are 3 pigment types... black/white, blue/yellow and red/green. After looking at one color for a long period of time the cells in your eyes become accustomed to it in a process called bleaching. The image will remain visible after its removal as the pigments go back to their neutral state... but the after image you see will be the opposite colors of what was originally viewed... Blue is opposite yellow, so the after image on her body made her appear yellowish, etc.
I now feel like the biggest nerd on Digg. When you stare at a color for a length of time, the neurons connected to the cells become fatigued and start firing much slower. Then, when you look at a white screen, you will see the opposite color, because the neurons for the colors that hadn't been firing as much are firing, but the other ones are still fatigued, so you perceive the negative color than you were staring at. Since the first image is a negative color image, when it changes to a grey scale, you briefly perceive they negative image of it. The grey scale helps to make it sharper, but you could also stare at a white spot quickly and see a much less defined color image.
