- uziq, on 10/10/2007, -4/+74That's possibly the worst way to die. :(
- crapmatic, on 10/10/2007, -2/+51I have to say, if I ever die in a pit of toxic sludge, my spirit won't rest until people halfway around the world digg my death.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+42How bout when dozens die every year at the kite festival, and then the next year dozens more die!! How do you get killed at a KITE FESTIVAL??? http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C0 ...
- solodude59, on 10/10/2007, -3/+37SEVEN people?! come on, guys. after two, maybe three people, i would have just called an ambulance... also a plumber. yeah, calling the plumbers a good idea.
- socialpyramid, on 10/10/2007, -6/+33Reminds me of the time 6 people died trying to save a chicken from a well in Egypt: http://www.toucansolutions.com/pat/wob/waste.html. Sad.
- delightfuldemon, on 10/10/2007, -7/+32I almost feel bad for laughing at this.
- davidwasman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26"it was not immediately clear if the men died from exposure to noxious gases in the tank or drowned "
Ok, that's now top on my list of ways NOT to die...drowning in sh*t. - theshizzler, on 10/10/2007, -13/+35Insert excrement pun here.
- ZenMojo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22The ones trying to save a 17 year old from a ***** hole?
- cnycompguy, on 10/10/2007, -7/+25dar win
- Torpov, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Well that article summed it up: victory shooting, horrible rivalry, electrocution and falling off roofs. From what I've read of the Pakistan kite festival, they take it seriously and it was banned for a while.
- TippyTom, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17I nominate that whole family for a Darwin award
- VEGETAble, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Who the hell would try to fix their own septic tank?
- wing05, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Calling it a "kite festival" is loosely putting it.
Kinda like taking the old Robot Wars tv show, putting the audience ring side and take away any sort of safety barrier between the audience and the flying saw blades, swiging anvile and whatnot, and then calling it a "robot festival".
IIRC, kites in that festival have glass shards glued to the lines and sharpened tips and edges along the kites to try and take down other kite flyers. - realgoat21, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16Am I the only one who finds this really tragic?...especially how they kept on going down in succession, even though they probably knew what was happening by that point.
- maiku00, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12thats a pretty '*****' way to die
- zekt, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13No, I found a midget in a bikini and got him to read it.
- noamchomskeet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Poor kid was just doing what his mom told him, that's gotta make her feel bad for life.
- bratterscain, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12They're in deep *****. But let's not forget about the coroner's ***** job.
- tarzidil, on 10/10/2007, -0/+82 victims is tragic, hell 7 victims at once is tragic... 7 victims in succession is kinda tragic but it is also thinning the herd. What, in the name of all that is holy, were the last four would-be rescuers thinking as they descended into that dark, corpse filled hole? This time it'll be different? Allow the dumb ones to go first so that there is someone with a brain cell in their skull to go get more help if the initial efforts end in disaster.
- harlowsmonkeys, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9To be pedantic, only six died in the septic tank resuce effort. One was the person they were trying to rescue.
- kevma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I would, but it's a sensitive topic and I'm afraid I'd get into deep *****.
Puns aside, I'm truly sorry for these men, although the way they died isn't great - they died in an attempt to save another human, and that's very noble. - FBombAndy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11It's in my raccoon wounds!
- Akaji, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Don't forget loading your string up with glass to try to cut each others' strings. Obviously, it can cause some complications when you're hit with glass-laden string moving at 10-15 miles an hour, being held taught by a kite....
- londubh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7After the second one doesn't come out you don't send any more in. Oh, and tie a rope to the first rescuer so you can pull him back out.
- jftitan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6But the Mario Brothers already told them they wouldn't do it.
- NikoKun, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Worst way to die ever!
No seriously... I simply cannot think of a worse way to die, than suffocating in human excrement... - duddles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Andy crawled to freedom through five hundred yards of *****-smelling foulness I can't even imagine. Or maybe I just don't want to. Five hundred yards. That's the length of five football fields, just shy of half a mile.
- duddles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It reminds me of the SNL sketch where everyone keeps jumping into the lion's cage one by one - each time getting splattered by blood.
- Checkerd, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8I always read things in a Moran Freeman voice, makes everything more interesting.
- imkrazy182, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6http://www.toucansolutions.com/pat/wob/waste.html
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm pretty sure that's just an urban legend. But I'm too lazy to check Snopes, so feel free to prove me wrong.
- ozroy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5They were exposed to noxious gases, then they died, ie "they all died after exposure". At this stage they do not know if the noxious gases poisoned them, or they lost consciousness and then drowned ie "not immediately clear if the men died from exposure to noxious gases in the tank or drowned after possibly losing consciousness".
that's some good english, i tells you. - holybjork, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11kill one man... shame on the septic tank...
kill two men... shame on the men...
and yet... they still keep going? - uncommonsmoke, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8"They couldn't bear the fumes and they suffocated and died,"
Having to live and work with one of the smelliest roommates alive, I can feel their pain. - shadus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7When I read the story the first thing came to my mind was "wow, that's *****." Then I giggled and decided to look at the comments to see how many down that comment would be :P 3-- i'm impressed :)

My link got truncated for some reason after an edit I made. - Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Kinda reminds me of a scene in "Mom and Dad Save the World" with the Light Grenade...and I'm probably the only one here who knows what I'm talking about.
- mulvipolo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5buried for explaining your own reference.
- Useight, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Well that stinks.
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I used google to translative to German and read mine in a Rammstein voice. I have no clue what the article was about, but it sounded scary as *****, and I'm pretty sure there were flamethrowers involved.
- devilbody, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artic ...
This sort of thing happened not to long ago in the states. - Johnagain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The Egyptians from the village of Rifa had not seen the OSHA training videos, apparently.
How sad... - audguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I second that!
- datastorageguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That's what happens when you hire lemmings to do your septic work.
- UPSLynx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This just happened in America about 2 months ago. I work at a local television station, and mid-day we shoot a show called Agday. They reported that a small Amish family lost 5 members to a similar incident. A young son, while digging, succumbed to methane fumes. His father then went in to save him, and died himself. The older son, and two farm hands followed before the mother called the police. Methane is a serious gas, and situations like these occur normaly when at times of crisis, people just don't think straight. It's really sad.
