- MommaLu, on 07/27/2008, -4/+65I asked my 16 year old nephew which is easier for him to get drugs or alcohol and he said drugs by far. Drugs should be legalized just like alcohol. By legalizing them, buyers are required to show proof of age and the Government gets another tax revenue source instead of spending loads of tax dollars imprisoning non-violent criminals.
Making drugs legal doesn't have a down side. They are kept behind counters and only sold to adults. This will do away with the meth addicted child filled streets. The only reason kids can get their hands on drugs is because it is illegal. Making drugs illegal only empowers criminals, it does not make anyone safer. - alapoet, on 07/27/2008, -3/+63I love Seattle. See you at Hempfest!
Come by the Marijuana Policy Project booth on Sunday, Aug. 17; I'll be there from 12:30 to 3. - razorsharpwit, on 07/27/2008, -8/+64How about the case for all drugs...It's none of your business what I do. They say it leads to crime, well so does hunger, where does it end? And what about these crimes? they're already crimes- let me take heroin if I want, If I steal something charge me with theft.
This should really be protected under the 2nd Amendment.
End the Prohibition - jask0, on 07/27/2008, -4/+28www.norml.org
- gu0d, on 07/27/2008, -7/+32Smoke weed everyday. I don't give a *****.
- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -3/+23Amen, Norm Stamper. The cause for the legalization/decriminalization of marijuana needs more people like him. The case for medical use is a great first step, but there also needs to be more focus on legalization for recreational use as well. Many respectable people use marijuana and it's time we stop acting embarrassed or feel like we're doing something wrong, people need to start speaking out and spreading the word.
Also, I love Seattle. Hempfest AND the all the beautiful people of the pacific northwest? Count me in. - inactive, on 07/27/2008, -0/+17Wish I could.
- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -8/+25Good luck trying to get that past our psychotic mayor Greg Nickels. His retarded ideas ranged from banning bonfires at public parks to charging 20 cents for plastic grocery bags. He stops at nothing to destroy what made Seattle a unique city. Everywhere you look, Seattle's old cultural icons like the Sunset Bowl are being destroyed for ugly prefab condos. Our spineless elected officials waste our money on things like this:
Seattle's one million dollar toilets are on ebay now:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Hering-Bau-WCmatic-Automatic-P ...
And now they want 17 billion dollars to complete light-rail system that should have been installed 20 years ago: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/20 ...
What the ***** happened to Seattle? It used to be such a livable place. 15 years ago a house in my neighborhood cost around $200,000. Now you can't find anything under $450,000. These Californians need to go back and take their McMansions with them.
But we still have Hempfest.....for now. - thegrantman, on 07/27/2008, -3/+21"The case for weed". I'm sick of needing an explanation to smoke weed. Because I ***** want to,that's why. It's not hurting anyone and makes me imaginative, creative and peaceful.
- enclaved, on 07/27/2008, -1/+17can I have their stash?
- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -2/+18Marijuana is no more harmful than cigarettes. In terms of impairing your ability to drive, it has far less an impact than alcohol. Most people don't understand that and think you are going to experience some extreme effects like those of heroin. Pot is a relatively tame drug, I don't smoke simply because I don't like smoking and smoke filling my lungs. Some people don't care about that so good for them, but let the people make the choice.
- obsolite, on 07/27/2008, -2/+17Right to bear arms?
- peaceninja, on 07/27/2008, -0/+14im slowly convincing all my friends and family about this. as someone who doesn't use (recreational or pharmaceutical) drugs and would probably rarely use recreational drugs were they legal, i think we need to make this more of a mainstream debate
- sykopath79, on 07/27/2008, -1/+14....or the right to bare arms, to make it easier to shoot the aforementioned heroin?
- majikmixx, on 07/27/2008, -5/+17I guess the admins are busy taking bong hits because the server's down.
- cli006, on 07/27/2008, -2/+14Did you also know THC has been shown to shrink tumors? It literally inhibits tumor growth even better than synthetic alternatives.
"I don't want to be breathing second-hand smoke from your crap."
This is why you're a d-bag. Have you heard of something called cigarettes? Are they legal? Are they prohibited from most public areas?
So you're saying the millions of marijuana users in the US should still be classified as criminals just because they enjoy smoking a little bit of herb JUST because you don't want to breathe the second hand smoke. So you'd rather have the US continue a failed drug war that wastes billions of our tax dollars and arrests hard working everyday citizens? - Kwiter, on 07/27/2008, -4/+15Long walk from Brooklyn to Seattle
- kokoshka, on 07/27/2008, -2/+13Use a vaporizer. Smoking in public should be illegal in most cases, just like drinking.

- Caffeinate, on 07/27/2008, -1/+11I don't even smoke pot, and I believe we should legalize it. We should also legalize opium poppies. Both plants are easily grown, and provide significant revenue to entities willing to take the risk to grow them. To continue to point to the drugs themselves, and stopping distribution as a panacea to all of societies ills is to deny a fundamental truth: Alcohol is legal, and it causes more havoc than marijuana could ever dream to cause. I dare say that opium can't possibly be worse than 5 drinks at the pub, though I'm not an expert on opium.
Trying to stop people from getting high has caused more problems than it has solved. Imagine if it was actually legal - addiction will get worse for a few years, but then, to be frank, darwin's law will weed out the idiotic among the heroine population, the stoners will stop needing to be so damned furtive to function, and as a whole, we will remember that as a species we are here to survive, live our lives, and enjoy what life has to offer. If that means some people get their kicks off of marijuana and opium, then go for it.
If you aren't one of them, then stop crying because they are enjoying themselves and find something else to do if you want to be an enforcer of legislation - like corporate bail-out, government waste and lobby reform. Those three could stop more crimes that do *quantifiable* damage to the populace than throwing a stoner or two in jail *ever* could. - RNEMESiS42, on 07/27/2008, -1/+11When I was a kid, it was way too much of a hassle to get booze. You'd find your friend that's a senior, that has an older brother or has some older friends. THEN you'd pay him 25 dollars to get 750 ml of vodka, or a 12 pack of beer. If I wanted pot? Just ask anyone at my highschool that looks like the smoke pot. So, of course, we usually bought pot, since it was the easiest to get.
- kokoshka, on 07/27/2008, -0/+9Kids will drink and smoke regardless for the exact same reason everyone else does. It feels good. At least make them pay taxes and give them a place to get a hold of the stuff that doesn't involve associating with drug dealers.
- kinneas666, on 07/27/2008, -1/+10Actually, I don't know where you have been but, this is the U.S.A. ,and guns in fact are legal.
Seeing as how you can legally use a firearm at any age, I shot targets when I was ten, and you need to be 21 to even possess alcohol, well then, I would say you scored pretty poorly on the SAT's analogy section. - fallore, on 07/27/2008, -2/+11Any mirrors?
- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -1/+9Tell that to Carl Sagan, who smoked weed almost daily, according to his friends.
- kinneas666, on 07/27/2008, -1/+9deal.
- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -4/+12Pot is fine.
- Bjango, on 07/27/2008, -2/+10The best solution is to keep smoking pot. It will train your lungs to deal with smoke. Then our species will evolve to have super iron lungs that can filtrate smoke of all kinds.
It would work, man. - kokoshka, on 07/27/2008, -5/+13You're a dick, and that's comparison is totally wrong on two levels. Guns have one purpose, you point them at what you want to die and then pull the trigger. Drugs have a different purpose, you use them and they make you feel good. There should be restrictions on everything that can cause serious harm, but those restrictions have to make sense in relation to the potential for harm.
- wazzledoozle2, on 07/27/2008, -2/+10THC is fat and alcohol soluble. You don't have to smoke it, eating it is much more effective.
- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -5/+13here's my case for pot ----> http://www.weedstore.com/index.php?main_page=produ ...
- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -2/+10Roarrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Albumen, on 07/27/2008, -3/+11Be realistic. Not all drugs are the same. Addiction is a clinical reality. Some drugs are not only addictive, they are extremely harmful to the people who take them. Take meth for example. I understand the idea that the Gov't shouldn't be regulating everything, and I agree. On the other hand, drugs like meth, coke, crack, heroin, oxycontin, Special K, and X cause medical problems for which I, as a taxpayer, don't want to foot the bill. Addicts tend to lose their jobs and forget to pay their insurance premiums so don't tell me we won't get stuck with the bill!
Weed I have no problem with however. - highlymodified, on 07/28/2008, -0/+7"You'll have to get your dope from either government-run or extremely regulated licensed stores"
You're overlooking an important fact:
The cannabis plant grows with ease almost anywhere.
If possession is legal, then you or someone you know will grow it. Problem solved. - ftw8tw, on 07/27/2008, -1/+8a very bad fail
- thegrantman, on 07/27/2008, -1/+8You did this before and it was not well received.
- crazycarlmar, on 07/27/2008, -2/+9you're racist
- whywait, on 07/27/2008, -1/+8And how long can you smoke weed?
- UglyBunny, on 07/27/2008, -1/+8That isn't even what MommaLu is saying Streggoth. Guns are restricted like alcohol is -- you have to be a certain age to buy one. With the current system anyone who has the will to buy drugs can and with no restrictions. If I were to try to buy a gun or alcohol, even being of legal age, I have to show ID. Drug dealers never ask for ID.
- madcowsb, on 07/27/2008, -0/+7By that line of thinking, it's purely an economic issue. And it comes down to "does the cost to deal with the medical consequences of addiction outweigh the cost of drug enforcement".
I have no idea which one wins out (my guess would be the drug war, but I have no real facts to back that up). Still, I think when it comes down to it, legal or not, people are going to get addicted to things, so the medical community will have to deal with that regardless.
Either way, if it's the government's responsibility (and I frankly don't think it is either way), I'd prefer to see the money go towards treatment and eliminating the reasons people do drugs in the first place than on enforcement of prohibition that's only a symptom of a bigger problem anyway. - inactive, on 07/27/2008, -1/+8That's what happens when you live in "such a livable place".
- rootryan, on 07/27/2008, -0/+7Two of the top five ranking websites in the world?
- zdevil26, on 07/27/2008, -2/+9Obviously it would be illegal to smoke in public seeing as you can get high from second-hand smoke.
And tobacco doesn't have carcinogens? - Tyrghast, on 07/27/2008, -2/+9An argument for the right-wing republican nuts who make sure pot stays illegal:
Your god made pot a hardy plant that can grow almost anywhere in almost any environment. You do a multitude of things with it, from ingest it for medicinal purposes, make clothes that are softer and more durable than cotton, rope, etc. Making a naturally occuring plant that has nothing but positive uses illegal is like saying your god made a mistake, and who are you to tell your god he's wrong? - Anonj0rm4n, on 07/28/2008, -2/+8Legalize it. Don't criticize it
- UglyBunny, on 07/27/2008, -0/+6Well, of-age people must at some point enable the minor drinking or smoking. Either the person selling the alcohol or tobacco, or the person buying the stuff for the kid. Regulating the sale of drugs adds another layer that the minor must go through in order to obtain the substance. A kid that wants to get drunk must first find an over age person, convince that person to break the law for them, and only then can they get their hands on boos. A kid that wants to smoke crack just has to ask a crack dealer.
- krnldmp, on 07/27/2008, -2/+8Welp. One problem with that argument is if people smoked tobacco in the amounts that marijuana is usually smoked we probably would still have no idea it causes cancer.
