Scariest airport EVER [PIC]
cdn-www.airliners.net — The landing strip in Courchevel, France is so short that you have to land on an inclined strip to slow down and take off on a decline to pick up enough speed. Who even needs to ski after a landing like that?

goatse.cx, pronounced "goat sex," not "goatsy."- xlneoMAXlx, on 01/26/2008, -5/+9it was goat.cx, pronounced goat sex. then goat.se
n00b- wellyuk, on 01/27/2008, -0/+7Err, you're the "n00b". It was goatse.cx.

- chrisfrye11, on 01/26/2008, -4/+102Oh man, is it out on blu-ray yet?
- rollem, on 01/26/2008, -6/+21But if they have just a little bit too much speed when landing, they'll go off the runway without having enough speed to take off again.
- blqysmg, on 01/26/2008, -0/+36one lands uphill. the problem would be landing short, into the cliff wall.
- elnerdo, on 01/26/2008, -1/+24Falling off a cliff is actually a very efficient way to gain enough speed to fly again.
- stoanhart, on 01/26/2008, -0/+4You land going towards the photographer. So, if you have a bit too much speed, you run into the snowy hill. That could cause some expensive damage to your plane, but I don't think it would be very fatal (since you would have lost most of the speed by then).
Taking off, if you don't have enough speed you fall and gain more.
Like the parent said, the scariest airport would have a wall at the end. This one is pretty cool, but not as dangerous as it looks.
- sfxman, on 01/26/2008, -9/+2Going around at this type of airports is not an option... those who tried ended up in trees...
- TomTruelle, on 01/26/2008, -2/+142dugg for wall of nazis

- Chairboy, on 01/26/2008, -1/+25Actually, go-arounds at this airport are explicitly not allowed. There's a mountain behind it, nowhere to go unless you have a military plane or something with crazy power.
- scotticus, on 01/27/2008, -0/+1I just gave this one a try in FSX... I couldn't do it in anything but the cub. Having a lot of power doesn't necessarily mean short take off distance.

- spudnic, on 01/26/2008, -25/+5Do you even know what Godwin's law is?
- bitspace, on 01/26/2008, -2/+24It seems so, since it was making fun of an invocation of "nazis" in the original comment. OK, so it wasn't use of Hitler or Nazis as a weak rhetorical defense, but the joke was sensible and funny.
- spudnic, on 01/26/2008, -25/+5Do you even know what Godwin's law is?

- BigglesPiP, on 01/26/2008, -1/+7Going around isn't an option, there is a mountain behind the camera, cliff sort of arcs round the runway, if you don't land on the tarmac, you land nose 1st in a near vertical cliff.

- ashnbell, on 01/27/2008, -0/+1well, they seem to have had a similar idea at Denver airport.... they've got at least one wall with a distinctly Nazi like character painted upon it.The Nazi like character is actually in the process of impaling a white bird of some kind with a massive great sword (swords are kind of spikey).
http://www.geocities.com/Baja/5692/murals04.jpg
Not too far off of your "wall + Nazi's + spikes" concept.... admittedly the Nazi's and spikes are somewhat less 3 dimensional and solid than would have been ideal, and the New kind of missed all the runways when building the wall in question.
But i think the effect on anyone who happened to notice the curious runway layout whilst still in the air...
http://maps.google.com/maps/mm?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=39 ...
...confronted by the Nazi like fella in that mural, could cause some psychological damage at least - Tomchei, on 01/27/2008, -1/+2Nazis are only scary if you're Jewish.

- ltchimpo, on 01/26/2008, -3/+5***** right. I found a copy of Goldeneye for $8usd @ a pawn shop. Great game, even after you've killed a guy and they're twirling through the air- you can still shoot them and get that satisfying thud! Oh, it's great! Damn you Trevlean!
- Jevy14, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3Did you know that you could sell that game for over $20, a local vintage gaming shop i go to is charging $40 for it

- theduck71, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1It is the Airport from Goldeneye, they just stretched it in the movie.
- monospaced, on 01/26/2008, -3/+2Reminds me of the landing site in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
- rrwright, on 01/26/2008, -8/+12No, it's the airport from "Tomorrow Never Dies." It's where the terrorists had their weapon sales. And Bond steals a jet and flies it UP the ramp, taking off right over another jet (which is later thwarted in an aerial duel by the unfortunate RIO being ejected from Bond's plane into the belly of the other).
- kcdstudios, on 01/27/2008, -1/+2God damn that was completely wrong. Definitely Goldeneye. You need to stay in more.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 01/27/2008, -1/+2Definitely Goldeneye.
- wetdirtmud, on 01/26/2008, -0/+10Yes it was in the movie where he knocks out the pilot and pulls back on the planes controls, looks like he fell straight down the mountain but he flies up and is shot at by all of the guards and Ourumov. In the video game Goldeneye 007 this level was called "Runway" I believe.
- autobotguy, on 01/26/2008, -0/+8first thing i thought of was goldeneye
- soupnrc, on 01/26/2008, -0/+4That was my first thought as well. Then I thought of the movie Air America... While that airport wasn't nearly as sketchy, still reminded me of it.
- MadOgre, on 01/26/2008, -0/+1damn it... I was going to say that.
- juicebag, on 01/27/2008, -0/+1Reminds me of the Timesplitter 2 level. Which was a copy of the Goldeneye level, but still.

- blqysmg, on 01/26/2008, -1/+14As a glider pilot, this is NOT a scary airport. Takeoffs are simple, just get airspeed eventually. The only problem would be excessive rotor. Landings could be scary, but shouldn't be much of an issue - just don't come up short. Long landings are not really possible.
- mille716, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2Wouldn't you land entering at the drop off point though?
- Monstradamus, on 01/26/2008, -0/+7I think you enter the bottom of the slope so that the hill helps you slow down.
- Malchus89, on 01/26/2008, -3/+2But what about non-glider pilots? Say someone is trying to take a Leer into there?
- mrjit, on 01/26/2008, -1/+2Wouldn't the thermals from the valley help push up the aircraft anyway? Isn't that why its built at the cliff?
- aviazn, on 01/26/2008, -0/+4The real problem here isn't coming up short, it's that you really only get one shot at a landing. If you mess up, you won't get much of a chance to execute a go around because you're flying straight at a huge mountain with very little available lift in the thin air at altitude.
- SneezingTree, on 01/26/2008, -0/+5As a Canadian ultralight pilot, the landing is much less the scary part than the takeoff; Since you're on your way down a hill, there is no way to really stop if there is engine trouble. Even brakes won't help you much, if at all.
- mille716, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2Wouldn't you land entering at the drop off point though?
- lacreme, on 01/26/2008, -2/+2Looks like they'll need to provide hygienic bags while you're on the ground.
- mCanada, on 01/26/2008, -16/+5Wrong. The scariest part would be the pissed off token wives ***** down your throat for endangering their precious upper crust offspring if anything went askew.
- perogi21, on 01/26/2008, -0/+4Token wives don't have offspring... They leave that job to the previous wives...
- twiztidsinz, on 01/26/2008, -3/+26This reminds me of the Air Base outside of Iron Forge.
- slundal, on 01/26/2008, -0/+5Haha I just flew over it and was thinking the same thing. Ingenious Dwarfs!

- leonwehttam, on 01/26/2008, -1/+4There was this one in Dutch Harbor, Alaska that i had to land at....they fly right at a mountain then bank right onto the landing strip....they said they came in too fast the first time in and had to take off again...i almost ***** my pants on that flight :D

- samfishercell, on 01/26/2008, -2/+8I've gotta say, this movement on the net where a blog makes some list, slaps together a bunch of pictures, and makes it a post kinda irks me. I'd love to at least know where these airports are.
- clickwir, on 01/26/2008, -2/+2Totally. It's mostly bull ***** with no content.
- Chicken, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3I just hate it because of the word "EVER"
- dhughes, on 01/26/2008, -4/+1 The part that scares me is how did those cars get there and even worse how do they leave? I don't see any roads.
- lacreme, on 01/26/2008, -0/+11Now you're thinking with portals!
- clickwir, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2It's just the angle at which the picture was taken. Taken at this angle to help make the severity of it more.
- Jlaw09, on 01/26/2008, -0/+7This airport is Courchevel. Its in France and on the Alps. Usually pilots fly small Propeller planes there. On landing the apply a little bit of power to get up the hill. Also if you think this is scary you never seen Lukla airport near Mt Everest!
- bluepass, on 01/27/2008, -0/+1I wonder if this airport is available in Flight Simulator. It's worth trying it out. Also isn't the point of the hill to slow down the airplane since the runway is short? Why would they increase power? I think the hardest thing about landing on that runway is landing right at the beginning of the strip. The incline will help slow down the airplane. The only problem would be touching down where the runway starts going up because you have the force of the touchdown pushing up on the landing gear and on top of that the land going up.
- screensnot, on 01/27/2008, -0/+1It's not in FS2002. But, you can add about anything. Here is one guy who did:

- 007billabong, on 01/26/2008, -1/+33This airport was used in Tomorrow Never Dies. " The opening teaser sees Bond single-handedly blitzing a terrorist arms bazaar ëon the Russian borderí. The remote location is one of the worldís few high-altitude airfields, Peyresourde, in the central French Pyrenees."
- mille716, on 01/26/2008, -0/+4Found it.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4Sppi4W2jis - chrisj33, on 01/26/2008, -0/+1I thought I had seen the airport somewhere.
- Ontarian, on 01/26/2008, -2/+1Goldeneye rather.
- dSlifer, on 01/27/2008, -0/+1No, It's Tomorrow Never Dies. The airport used in Goldeneye was much larger.
- mille716, on 01/26/2008, -0/+4Found it.
- bullox, on 01/26/2008, -0/+6San Diego's airport forces planes to fly dangerously close to the downtown area. A friend of mine lives in an apartment downtown, planes fly directly overhead.
- tallarida, on 01/26/2008, -0/+1i fly into san diego all the time. its a very steep descent.
- littlebylittle, on 01/26/2008, -6/+53It's a secret Scientology Base.

Is Digg filtering this stuff out?

- mistafreeze, on 01/26/2008, -4/+2wow, so scary it scared the server!
- XxbladesfirexX, on 01/26/2008, -3/+19LoL, It's perfectly safe, works using the updrafts of the mountain. (I'm a pilot).
- daxsymbiont, on 01/26/2008, -11/+2the updrafts. u and 1 more would know what they r.
- Svizac, on 01/26/2008, -1/+2lol isnt it obvious? :)
I'm not a pilot, not even a weather enthusiast :)
I reckon it's the wind blowing over the mountain, blowing up on this side so you get more lift from the same aircraft speed.
Am I right? - twiztidsinz, on 01/26/2008, -1/+8Updraft...
Lets take a moment and split it into a few smaller words: Up and Draft
Up - A direction, usually above.
Draft - Movement of air.
now, Updraft - movement of air in an up direction.
- Svizac, on 01/26/2008, -1/+2lol isnt it obvious? :)
- subhuman, on 01/26/2008, -3/+10Both wrong. And you are not a pilot.
They are called "altiports", they fly a teardrop shaped circuit ( land up the slope, take off down) and you require a mountain rating in france to use them. The "updrafts" you speak of have nothing to do with it, they are built this way simply because they have no other choice, and at 8,000ft. engines dont have nearly the same performance as they do at MSL.- XxbladesfirexX, on 01/27/2008, -2/+2Are you a pilot? Because the wind coming off that mountain sure as hell will make or break you, nice try.
- daxsymbiont, on 01/26/2008, -11/+2the updrafts. u and 1 more would know what they r.
- sam1215, on 01/26/2008, -3/+0That Would be so intense but so scary!!!
- Existenz87, on 01/26/2008, -0/+18And if you miss your plane you can just use your motorcycle to jump off the end of the runway and free fall to catch up with the plane.
- xample, on 01/26/2008, -3/+2goldeneye was the first thing that came to mind
- Milkey, on 01/26/2008, -5/+0Goldeneye Runway Level much?
- Spectre77, on 01/26/2008, -0/+6Read previous comments much?
- diadem2, on 01/26/2008, -1/+3What makes me shiver isn't the airport itself, but the thought of getting the materials there to build it in the first place
- esharifi, on 01/26/2008, -0/+0Eh, some asphalt and some wood.
- chill888, on 01/26/2008, -0/+14one funny thing about the airport is that many of the signs are in Russian as the new oil-rich go skiing there. Last year a Russian high class prostitute ring was busted at Courchevel. I cycled up to it last year - excuse my ugly head but see the Russian writing above.
http://www.cycling-challenge.com/wp-content/upload ... - orangefly, on 01/26/2008, -1/+2oh hell no....i'll wait for the helicopter....
- aclements, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2I think I'll pass on flying into this place for a while. I'll jump out of the plane, but I don't think I would want to land there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFzP9CRFdWw
- spence1818, on 01/26/2008, -0/+0that looks more like a jump than a landing
- DevinOlsen, on 01/26/2008, -5/+1This was on the front page like just a couple days ago... Buried
- choppergirl, on 01/26/2008, -1/+0Nah, its just like flying under powerlines or bridges... you block out everything but your approach... in the case of power lines and bridges, you approach it flat and level like you are going to land.. but you don't... you just scoot right on under, then pull up and away. In this case, you block out everything but the airstrip, and your approach...
- Perk, on 01/26/2008, -0/+4You should try Lukla - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lukla_Airport - big mountain on one end - thousand meter drop on the other. And it's at 2900 meters elevation, so you don't exactly have full power.
- pavkata, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2Lukla Airport, elevation 9100ft (IATA: LUA, ICAO: VNLK) in Eastern Nepal is usually the starting point on the trek to Everest.

- Yaricks, on 01/26/2008, -3/+1This isn't the scariest... Search for Lukla.
Look here:
http://www.aviationpics.de/prev/flight-lukla-600.j ...
The airport is located close to Mt. Everest.. Looks allmost the same, but has a giant 1000m wall at one end, and a 2000m drop at the other end..
Google it!- mjhz, on 01/26/2008, -2/+0WOOW! That's scary...

- BigglesPiP, on 01/26/2008, -0/+1That ain't the half of it, there is a cliff face and a mountain behind the camera, no going around.
Drop of the end of the runway is quite steep and deep too. - iamnotrich, on 01/26/2008, -0/+1I always thought guatemala city's airport was scary
http://cdn-www.airliners.net/photos/photos/5/3/3/0 ...- sirpyro, on 01/27/2008, -0/+1Na, that's a really nice one.
Try a 700ft field some time, with cows on it!
- sirpyro, on 01/27/2008, -0/+1Na, that's a really nice one.
- Vorrador, on 01/26/2008, -4/+0looks very phallic :P
- MLisa, on 01/26/2008, -1/+1I can't believe over 200 diggers think the far end of the pic is where they land...the camera is facing where the planes come IN. The place comes in from the open space and then goes up the incline...you don't just go around again if you can't stop in time! You will hit a snowbank or trees.
- twiztidsinz, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2um.. no?
Wouldn't you touch down on the cliff edge and come to a stop at the the center of the pic?
So you can taxi over to the right side (the plane's Left), turn around, pick up passengers and take off?- jab2980, on 01/27/2008, -0/+0That is exactly what MLisa said. You land coming from the leftish side of the pic and take off from the rightish side, over the cliff.
- twiztidsinz, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2um.. no?
- wastelander, on 01/26/2008, -2/+3Some more info about the airport in this clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNFNFZq2BFY&feature ...
(not Rick Roll) - vspazv, on 01/26/2008, -0/+8It's not scary unless there's a burned out plane near the end of the runway.
- SirJman, on 01/26/2008, -1/+0Anyone remember the old airport in Hong Kong? Fly directly into the mountains, then over the buildings for landing.
