Russian girl crowned Miss World 2008

russiatoday.com — Russian girl Kseniya Sukhinova was crowned as the 58th Miss World in South Africa. The 21-year-old student from Russia beat 109 rivals. First runner-up was Trinidad and Tobago’s Gabrielle Walcott followed by India’s Parvathy Omanakuttan as second runner-up. The other two finalists were from South Africa and Angola.

    As a man, I've never thought of it in that way (although those are the kind of comments I would expect to see on Digg). The competition may be about physical appearance, but that doesn't mean sexual attraction.

    Miss World is no longer shown on terrestrial TV in the UK, I assume because it is considered sexist, but there are _plenty_ of programmes about how women should beautify themselves still around. Even series about women with disabilities becoming models. These are made for and watched by women.

    Really until women themselves decide to stop being so obsessed with appearance arguments against something like Miss World really ring hollow.

To those who don't know, Miss World's contestants are the first runner ups in each country's beauty contest, so Miss World is the best first runner up while the first runner up in Miss Universe is the second 'most beautiful of the country'. It's all so confusing.
    And I'm sure women in Alpha Centauri are not happy about us hosting and winning Miss Universe every year either!
