    The question is whether the artwork was intentionally meant to use famous faces, or if the artist simply stole them. I get a feeling the latter is more likely :)

Also da Vinci was known for experimenting with pigment and paints causing some of his work to deteriorate rapidly. Many of his drawings have survived well, but his paintings and frescoes are much more rare.
