heh. - pimpbot1979, on 10/29/2007, -1/+69People don't realize that WWI soldiers fought in purple chiffon hot pants.
- luet, on 10/23/2007, -0/+56Even if they're digitally recoloured, these are fantastic photos. Some of the best black and white > colour conversions I've ever seen. Gives you a more human perspective on WWI.
- sncshesh, on 10/23/2007, -2/+50Fantastic.
Was anyone else surprised at how much they enjoyed these? - luke374, on 10/23/2007, -6/+46"white > colour "
RACIST! - dbr_onix, on 10/23/2007, -5/+43And surprising to see that the world was actually in colour back then.
- inactive, on 10/23/2007, -7/+41cool photos
- trentasaurus, on 10/23/2007, -1/+35It's almost eerie. I always would think of WW1 history in black and white, you don't usually think of them like real people.
- goldragon, on 10/23/2007, -0/+29that's gonna be the surgeon, which back then still meant the guy who hacksawed off your limbs with a modicum of anesthesia. that "dress" is his apron to keep your blood off him. =)
- MattnJax, on 10/23/2007, -1/+28Very cool. It's interesting to see the uniforms from back then in color.
- gwey, on 10/22/2007, -1/+26No ***** they're old.
- mynona, on 10/26/2007, -1/+23Interesting words of advice at the bottom of that page...
About srsly cool:
This site's been made because seriously cool stuff shouldn't be scraped off a google search, cut & pasted between ads and devoid of context. It's a sad day when all you need to do to make a living is harvest a few google image searches and submit it to digg, reddit, stumbleupon and the like. Nothing makes your dick shrivel faster than perpetuating that crappy and unfortunately successful recipe. - paulbyrnes, on 10/23/2007, -4/+24The sixth photo down of nurses and soldiers - check out the grizzly bearded bloke in the nice white dress!
http://srslycool.com/photos/14/250.jpg - dunderballer, on 10/29/2007, -3/+21Most of those soldiers look middleaged and overweight
- nakile, on 10/22/2007, -0/+15Kind of gives World War I a more realistic feeling.
- buffjingles, on 10/22/2007, -2/+17In Britain it's spelled, "colour."
- goldragon, on 10/23/2007, -0/+14cool, these remind me of some late 1800's colorized photos i saw. i can't remember where i saw them but the story was the photographer would take the same photo on black and white film three times, each time using a glass filter of red, blue, or green color. in the dark room then, he could reverse the process, developing the print three times to get color. i think the guy was in the employ of the smithsonian... it was amazing to see the colors some of the native americans could get in their dress clothes using natural dyes.
- Swanston, on 10/22/2007, -0/+14Why the hell were mustaches so popular back then?
- Berrex, on 10/22/2007, -0/+13They were gray.
- cavemonkey50, on 10/23/2007, -2/+15Actually, for most of the English speaking world it is colour. Just like centre and a number of other words.
- warriorscot, on 10/22/2007, -0/+11Those were the ones with the good camera.
- fallenone05, on 10/23/2007, -0/+11yeah, but with mustaches!
- dbr_onix, on 10/22/2007, -0/+11No. from the site http://www.worldwaronecolorphotos.com/
'Although color photography was around prior to 1903, the Lumière brothers, Auguste and Louis, patented the process in 1903 and developed the first color film in 1907. The French army was the primary source of color photos during the course of World War One.' - dbr_onix, on 10/23/2007, -5/+15They're of World War 1. Of course they are old! That's the whole point...
- frostieDude, on 10/23/2007, -0/+10Only when you are in France, though.
- paulbyrnes, on 10/22/2007, -1/+11That's how you spell colo(u)r in UK English. It's better.
I'dE say in its defenCe that, upon writing, you will realiSe it is a more coloUrful literal style. - quomen, on 10/23/2007, -6/+16srsly cool photos
- PopcornDave, on 10/22/2007, -1/+10What about the Asians?
- paulbyrnes, on 10/23/2007, -1/+10Good for you.
- razrielle, on 10/22/2007, -2/+10Man its hard to beleive that before this the world was black and white, kinda like pleasentville
- knugen, on 10/22/2007, -1/+9Actually, I'm on Mars.
- MonkeyFarts, on 10/23/2007, -1/+9Er, color photography was invented in 1907 by Auguste and Louis Lumiere, about three decades before the Nazi party even existed.
- theokandroid, on 10/22/2007, -8/+16Old as hell but still amazing pictures nonetheless
- nonsapiens, on 10/23/2007, -0/+7The Nazi's invented colour photography?
What are you smoking? - napk, on 10/22/2007, -0/+7Autochrome... look it up boys
- TheHighPrivate, on 10/22/2007, -0/+7Because they're badass.
- fallenone05, on 10/22/2007, -0/+7makes for great camouflage
- insomniac8400, on 10/22/2007, -0/+7I didn't get the copyright claim at the end. Shouldn't photos this old be public domain by now?
- nigh7dagger, on 10/22/2007, -1/+7Thanks, Sherlock.
- endustry, on 10/22/2007, -0/+6Read "All Quiet on the Western Front" and you'll understand why older, smarter soldiers survived longer.
- sjbdallas, on 10/29/2007, -1/+7Yes they're all colored and I am about 90% sure they came from a book released early this year but I haven't found the reference for it yet. I read about the book in a BBC new article awhile back. They had 3 or 4 pictures. Glad to see more.
- Miche1987, on 10/22/2007, -1/+7You use words such as "levity" and "modicum", but I'm not too sure you're familiar with the word (or concept) of "joke"...
- GawtMilk, on 10/22/2007, -1/+7You're quite hip.
- MattnJax, on 10/22/2007, -0/+6It's like that movie pleasantville.
- nonsapiens, on 10/22/2007, -0/+6Firefox underlines 'colour' only if you've got the US English dictionary installed. Myself, (and the rest of the non-US English speaking world) mostly have the UK English pack installed.
- MonkeyFarts, on 10/22/2007, -1/+6"High-res nature?" Cameras were optical back then. There is no "resolution," so the resolution of these images is whatever resolution at which they were scanned. And yes, photography did look that good during WWI. These are just colored photos. The technology to color black and white photos has been around for well over a century, and color photography has existed for exactly 100 years. No, they are not fake.
- garvallagh, on 10/22/2007, -0/+5It nice to see the men of the 4th Moustache and Bearded foot and rifle divisions represented here!
PS No disrespect to the men and women who fought and died in this war, - virtualfred, on 10/22/2007, -0/+5Should have linked directly to the original webpage
