- asauterChicago, on 10/11/2007, -1/+36The point is the firm is aiming for some free advertising. And free advertising they just got. I'm sure their sales will go up thousands of a percent as word of mouth passes this along. The hate mail they get will be a small price to pay for all the publicity they are getting...
- Caruthers, on 10/11/2007, -5/+29Staten Island Landfill is a problem but Upper East Side Rich White Vanilla is ok? Is it so hard now-a-days to just call it vanilla or chocolate or strawberry?
- SuperSloth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19Well, they've successfully solved all the rest of the world's problems, so what else are they going to do?
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19It's sad we're paying our politicians to bitch about the names of ice creams instead of the important issues...
- qwertydvorak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15"Staten Island Landfill is a problem but Upper East Side Rich White Vanilla is ok?"
ya, but the 'Ghetto Dark Chocoloate' had Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton up in arms. Mayor Ray Nagin of the Chocolate City was said to be in talks with them. - PhantomBantam, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13@gemini
He's just running a landfill. He's got plenty of times on his hands. - DejectedRobot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I'm from Staten Island and I find it hysterical that people are actually offended by an ice cream's flavor name. What the hell does the landfill have to do with stereotyping the community? Face it, thats what Staten Island is known for, a giant landfill. It was viewable from space for crying out loud.
- hgb5150, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9'"It's not like we'll be expecting to see a syringe or a rubber boot in there," said Joe Melendez, an ironworker from Brooklyn.'
That's in "Coney Island Beach." - knugen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9There's definitely a point to offensive names. Here in Sweden, GB released a licorice-flavored ice cream called "Nogger Black" which caused the network "Centrum mot rasism" (Center against Racism) to go crazy ***** because the name "alluded" to "***** = licorice".
The point is that I don't think a single one of my friends DIDN'T buy it just to piss CMR off.
wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GB_Glace#Nogger_Black_controversy - WaterDragon, on 10/11/2007, -7/+16I was thinking more along the lines of, maybe, Jewberry. It costs twice the price, and when you open it, there are a just few blueberries and no ice cream. (Now just watch some idiot take offense at that comment! lol)
Yesterday, I bought a South Bronx Sundae. After I paid for it, I opened it, and a little guy with a gun jumped out and said "Now give me the rest of your money, sucka."
"Excuuuuse me...., do you have any Dominican Crack-berry?"
(If you insult all races equally, you will only offend the real idiots in all of them!) - Nogger, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Actually, the vanilla one is a witty name.
But what taste is the landfill one suppose to be? Smelly and disguisting? - leftfield, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8@ samus
"when are they coming out with White Trash Vanilla?"
They have it at every McDonalds, some even open 24/7. - orlyfactor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7People are too ***** sensitive. Have you ever driven on 440 in Staten Island...right past...the gigantic...***** LANDFILL? Yes, it's there, and it smells like ass, especially in the summer. If they find it offensive, get rid of the landfill, not the ice cream named after it. People really need to develop a thick skin. Suck it up, FFS.
- Spuy767, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Buried for incorrect title. Should, in fact, be titled "New York Politician Needs to Lighten the ***** Up"
;-) - crote, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Am I the only one who thinks "Upper East Side Rich White Vanilla" is hilarious?
Because it's pretty hilarious. - Caruthers, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10asauterChicago, you're right.
What I was saying though is that creative naming is dead and only used for purposes you described. Let's call this orange gonorrhea discharge sherbet because that will get a rise out of people and cause debate which will in-turn spread our name via word of mouth.
The second thing was that if the politician wanted to bitch, he should have at least taken the name which has implications of racism (yes I know it is a stretch but just for argument's sake) in it. He would have had at least something to stand on but instead he is going after "Staten Island Landfill" which as others have previously mentioned is a waste of his time and the taxpayers.
Besides I'd be willing to bet their ice cream doesn't taste any better than the crap they slop out at Walmart and that the only difference is the jacked up price. - jackhole, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Would this politician be offended to learn no one gives a crap what he thinks?
- xTRUMANx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I hope they don't take their suggestion and rename it the ferry berry.
Guy: Hey dude, what flavor is that?
Dude: Ferry Berry.
Guy: Fairy Berry? Fairy?! You queer.
*throws ice cream away and buys more manlier sounding ice cream* - Nogger, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5No faint connection is obscure enough to not be summoned, it seams.
- MikedaSnipe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6No kidding.
"They have a ice cream that makes fun of somewhere, i am so offended!"
Time to break out the worlds tiniest violin. - ElevenisEven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I'm offended by politicians
- amnorvend, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Doesn't take much to offend politicians these days...
- secretwhistle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4New Ice Cream Flavor Destroys Real Estate Market.
Buy now. - bandomac, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Ferry Berry was suggested, but would people be confused that it was named after Greenwich Village?
-sorry : ( - slayerab, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This is payback for Staten Island trying to leave the city some years ago.
- LuckyNYC, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Just to showcase how much Staten Island has to offer, the borough president suggested to name the ice cream "Ferry Berry" instead which honors one of the several ways to get off that god forsaken hell hole of an island.
- Crashwithuhk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Payback? I'm wondering why we didn't just let them go.
- protogenxl, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Well I am offended by politicians who waste tax payers money on nonsense issues while the world goes to hell in a hand basket.
- stou, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3yea, and it's usually the wrong *****.
- Bizdorph, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Maybe if your borough wasn't a ***** cesspool your argument would make sense.
Unfortunately Staten Island did have a gigantic disgusting landfill (what was it called again? bloodkill murder landfill? something like that) in it until recently, so you can please STFU and learn to lighten up.
The Upper East Side Rich White Vanilla is pretty funny. The mild racist uvertones make me giggle. - DRINKxREDxBULL, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"Upper East Side Rich White Vanilla?"
How about "Bronx Gangbanger Chocolate."
Nevermind, that would be racist. - Orion682, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I actually live on Staten Island, and have since around 1994. I've met Molinaro once, and met his predecessor, under which he was the deputy, twice, and as always, I've never been impressed by our politicians (yes, I vote, but the people on the island are predominantly idiots).
I have no problem with the name, and frankly don't care, though Ferry Berry sounds catchier, and that's about my only comment. ***** his boycott though, I'm eating it one way or another.
PS- My God that description of it sounded delicious... :d - reddoggie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4If you're offended, don't buy the product. It used to be that simple; now it ends up as a top-rated story on digg?!?!?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i don't think anyone is actually offended by these names, hehe
- Pic0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i don't eat ice cream very often and i would like to try some of this, good job marketing!
- LogicBomB, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Whenever I hear someone is offended all that comes to mind is "well that's a shame".
I'm offended by many things but I keep it to my goddam self because I know the difference between what other's might like and my own preferences. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I live in a land fill : |
- Croaton, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Placing remnants of innocent victims in a landfill called "The Fresh Kills" isn“t derogatory?
But god forbid someone should name an icecream with a less then faint connection to that certain landfill... because thats insulting... - isnthatheway, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2But if the ice cream is delicious, wouldn't it be a compliment to the landfill?
I'm not a huge optimist, so maybe I'm just misunderstanding. - SpaceMonkeyZero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2New Flavor for Brooklyn:

"the only body of water in the world that is 90 percent guns." - Gasdark, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Listen I'm from Staten Island and Molinari is a Douche. The fact is that although staten Island is a very nice place, lots of trees and what not; and a sort of mildly sordid underbelly filled with isolated gang violence, anti-semitism and general racism throughout segments of the population; and never mind that many of the jewish communities a few times a year find that a swastika has been carved into this or that car or painted on the wall of this or that building; and never mind that once in a blue moon a man will be arrested and dragged out of his basement for making home made pipe bombs while reading his copy of Mein Kampf (actually happened). All this stuff aside, the fact is the island has three major tourist attractions to it's name:the Verrazano bridge, the ferry, and that ridiculously huge, mountainous, seen from space with the naked eye, smells in the summer like bizarro mac and cheese garbage dump. And here's Molinari trying to reduce the efficacy of one of them. *****.
To put things into perspective, the mountains of garbage are so huge that an entire 5+ mile segment of highway passes through them. They're so big that the city is planning to make them into a park which will apparently include down hill skiing...that's right, mountains of garbage so big, you can ski down them. - Bizdorph, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Ah yes, here it is:
(courtesy of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staten_Island)
Staten Island is also known for the Fresh Kills Landfill, the repository of garbage from all of New York City for 53 years. The landfill was closed in 2001,[2] and there is an ongoing attempt to decontaminate the land and rehabilitate it for recreational uses. - rhoadesb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Perhaps it is the politician which is, "insulting and derogatory" .
- ImbecileCorn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Dumbass
- christopherRB, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What a bunch of ***** babies... It's a name get over it!!
- DoddSnow, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2People... this is about Ice Cream! The tax payers are paying this politician to fight battles about Ice Cream? Please, could there be a possibility that there is an issue more important than Ice Cream?
If you don't personally like the name of the Ice Cream then don't purchase it, it will then go away. - JohnnyXmas, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1HA HA GOOD. They accomplished what they set out to do. Not to mention its some damn good ice cream.
- kidvicious1973, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wahhhhhh, my feelings are hurt wahhhhhhh.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1A few years ago, Adams Outdoors ran a fictitious marketing campaign in this region to highlight the effectiveness of billboard advertising. The product was called "Outhouse Springs," "America's First Recycled Water". The bottle had a picture of an outhouse, against the backdrop of a nauseating green swirl. Several different ads were run, with slogans like "We're No. 1, not No. 2," or "L-M-N-O-(picture of water bottle)". The whole campaign was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek to generate buzz about outdoor advertising, and people thought it was an actual product. There was so much demand for the product that Adams Outdoors teamed up with a water bottling company to actually produce the bottled water.
