- Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35i find myself using the block button more and more these days.
- desistere, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Coming from a microbrew junkie and homebrewer, it's going to be hard to find that many different beers. The microbrew market is up and coming, but most Americans are too cheap to buy good beer... They'd rather have McDonalds than steak.
Having said that, it is definitely possible. Right now, he has almost entirely big brewery beers and those will run out in less than a month. Hopefully he lives in a big city like Seattle where you can get a lot of microbrews.
One thing's for sure- If he drinks 365 beers, he'll realize how ***** Becks really is! =) - unloud, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20People should send him free (as in beer) beer.
No, I'm not the owner of this website :-P - fearofcorners, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14@Desolite
The only problem is when you've already blocked the guy, you don't know what people are complaining about. Right now is a good example. - synystar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Yes. I too wonder if he's gonna make it. There are a lot of different beers out there. Good for him. Also, it's good to try different stuff.
- Prototek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11He lives in Florida and he means its good for the climate. Not the origin of the beer.
- Malakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Lots of people drink 365 different types of a beer in a year. There are plenty of raters on http://ratebeer.com/ who have averaged more than one a day for years. http://beeradvocate.com is another good rating site.
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Good for him! There are a lot of different beers out there and it's good to try different stuff. I wonder if he's gonna make it!
- Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6there is a liquor store in MA w/ 1,000 types of bottled beer. they have a fun mix and match program where you can make your own 6 pack with different beers in it - this way if you try something you don't like, you didn't just waste $5-$9. also when doing this, the beers are 15% cheaper (go figure, cheaper to break the set). So basically if the guy lived in MA, he could do 1000 beers in 1 year - although i'd argue its better to have a 6 pack of each to get the full affect of each type of beer. you might appreciate it differently after 4 or 5.
in NY, there is a bar known as croxleys with about 70-80 beers on TAP - which I prefer over bottled beer anytime. they give away stuff after you fill out a checklist and try 25 different types, 50 different types, etc. check it out if you are ever on LI. - Itkovian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Some suggestions of excellent Belgian beers:
Duvel
Orval
Westmalle
Westvleteren
Leffe
Palm
Hoegaarden - weirdness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Easily suggest 300 or so Bocks alone?... *****. You aren't a casual drinker! There are plenty of people who have trouble naming all 50 states.
- StarCrusher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5While I agree with you about Becks, I could easily suggest 300 or so types of Bocks alone. My favorites are doppelbocks, in particular, Augustiner Maximator. Not easy to find but a true delight.
- Fluidity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4All you need to do is spend a year living in Belgium and this would be a doddle, I've been to one bar in Brussels alone that had 39 different beers on tap and over 150 different bottled beers. Also, check out Michael Jackson's (No not THAT Michael Jackson!) beer guide to 500 beers http://www.amazon.co.uk/Great-Beer-Guide-Worlds-Beers/dp/0751308137/sr=8-10/qid=1168263723/ . He's effectively already done this (although obviously not one a day for a year) and has more than enough suggestions in there to keep you going for an entire year!
- bflfab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I only wish I had access to 365 different beers. Damn you TABC.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3UGH! Grolsch and Becks are terrible. He should check out Dogfish Head, Founder's, or Bell's for some ultimate beer snobbery.
This appears to be a guy who is used to nothing but 30-packs of Coors Light. On the other hand, he could be just getting the ones he's heard of out of the way first. - nsummy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Wow I should have started up a blog sooner, drinking 365 different beers in a year isn't a big deal. i go to this restaurant called Old Chicago where they have 110 different beers on tap. They have something called the world beer tour where you get prizes for finishing. I do about two and a half of them in a year.
- Crankt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you're a fan of wheat beer you should try Grasshopper by Big Rock Brewery (made in Calgary, Canada) or Erdinger, which is Bavarian, I believe.
Both are very tasty. - Deluxe247, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are some places (Underground Bluez in Orlando for instance) which hold over 150 beers alone from around the country. If you drink them all, you get your name on a plaque behind the bar (no I didn't, but should have in College!)
How do you suggest beers? Either I missed it but I only saw comments for the "current week", but no place to Suggest Beers outside of that. My wife is from the Czech Republic so I wanted to suggest a few of those, which I have found when traveling to be the best beers anywhere.
To name a few:
Budweiser Budvar* (The actual ORIGINAL Budweiser.. check out all the lawsuits between Budvar and AB)
Staropramen
Pilsnir Urquell
Gambrinus
Bernard*
The * denotes my personal favorites.. I think Budvar in the states is called "Czechvar" due to lawsuits and whatnot with AB.. If you havn't had any of these and enjoy good beer, I suggest you search them out. Much easier to get over in Europe, but Pilsnir is fairly common in the states. You should be able to find it if you look hard enough! - Jomwilli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Six beers a night (Thinking aggressively), sayyy six nights a week (one day off), That's 10 weeks and change. Not that hard.
I would enjoy drinking every Belgium beer there is, and enjoy most of 'em. Except for those vinegar tasting one's. :) - avolant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i dont think you know what that means.
- Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7weirdness, do you use /sarcasm tags in real life? or do you just hang around captain obvious all day so he can explain these things to you?
synystar, keep up the good work. - Itkovian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is a bar in Ostend, Belgium that has reputedly much more (bottled) beers. The pub is called 'Het Botteltje', if you ever end up here ...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@malakin and nsummy
Exactly what came to mind. I have done the 110 at Old Chicago and another 300+ at William's Uptown Bar and Peanut Gallery in much less than a year. Maybe that's a sign of a drinking problem or just that I like to try various beers to find the best.
This is no big deal. - sfrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No added alcohol is required. Different yeasts have the ability to survive in higher alcohol concentration environments. Standard yeasts used for your typical microbrew max out somewhere around 8-10%. Once you go past that, you start looking at wine and champagne yeasts, which typically max out around 20%. Once you go past 20%, you need to start employing some tricks, such as temperature control, yeast cycling, and aging of the final product.
I just brewed a barleywine that topped out at 16.5% after fermentation. I started with a standard beer yeast, fermented for 3 months. Then switched over to champagne yeast and let it go another 2 months. It's now in the cellar and we'll see where it winds up after a year or two of aging.
I'm not sure if you can technically call a 26% ABV brew a "beer", but that's all semantics. I'd still drink it! - BOSyooper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Unibroue brewery from Chambly, Quebec makes some excellent Belgian style beers. At least in New England they are easy to find. Don de Dieu, Maudite, and Fin Du Monde are all top notch.
- Dochtuir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thumbs up for the Hoegaarden
- DASH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I suggest keeping the bottles. I have a beer bottle collection, as of now about 120+ different beers. Most of them I can look at the bottle and remember where I got it and how it was.
- merky1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, this is a really difficult resolution. 1 beer a day from a different class of beer. If he lives in DC, check out this place: http://www.thebrickskeller.com/
- MattL920, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good luck getting your hands on a Westvletern though
- desistere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Having a huge number of beers available for customers to buy at a bar isn't always the best approach. Often times restaurants are so consumed with having the largest number of beers, that many of the beers expire. There's a bar around here that claims to have 100 beers, but I don't go there because I know that the company of at least one of their beers went out of business half a decade ago. Of course, buying all your beers at a bar would be ridiculously expensive too. The best option is probably to find a store that lets you mix and match.
- Itkovian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Come on, Stella is just bad. Especially compared to what other Belgian breweries produce.
- jaredvolkl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@cdahlkvist - A Minnesotan I see. Williams is a pretty cool place, and Old Chicago is just a standard. Have you ever been to Granite City? They have some awesome microbrews.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Coming from a microbrew junkie and homebrewer, it's going to be hard to find that many different beers."
Really? All he has to do is go to the Brickskeller in WashDC and he'll find more than that. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Sierra Nevada Barefoot (technically a barley-wine)"
And Barley Wine is just a name for a strong Ale. It has nothing to do with wine. - billtaylor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can't beat the following beers, Hoegaarden and Fat Tire from Fort Collins CO. But if they're not available I drink Red Stripe and Guinness. I must also say that if you haven't had any Cask Conditioned beers (any beer can be served this way but a kolsch style is my fav) you MUST. Many breweries and fewer bars have this. I know of a few places in PA and the Goose Island brewery in Chicago does.
- firsttube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree wholeheartedly. Texas sure can be weird with it's liquor and such.
- maus56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg for Dead Guy and Arrogant Bastard, two godly beers.
- Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ bitsmart - it is infact Julio's. i got the mix & match card in my pocket, i always keep it near my heart.
- ubuwalker31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.mistergone.com/365-Beer/allbeers.html lists about 900 beers that are available on the market. Finding them will be a challenge, but it can be done, especially since you can use the Internet to order beer in many states.
That being said, I am disappointed that Dann has only drank Stella Artois, Bass, Grolsch, and Beck's. I certainly hope Budweiser and Natty Light are up next! I think there is hope though, since he has tried Hop Hog.
My recommendation for all the diggers out there is to go to your local liquor store and ask for a copy of the regional "beer paper". Ale Street News is the one around here. It will have plenty of ads for places to buy good beer. - wh00dini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did anyone else notice this comment? "I’ve gotten lazy in the past few years and have quit trying to enjoy beer for what it is." Why would he do this if he doesn't care what beer is? Sounds like a good idea by someone that is going to execute it poorly.
- wyrdness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Has anyone tried Alaskan Smoked Porter? It tastes amazing but, unfortunately, is no longer available here in Britain (though us Brits have some of the worlds best beers). I'd also recommend St. Peters 'Honey Porter' and 'Cinnamon and Apple Spiced Ale'.
- joshposh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Something like that was done before in the "Harald Schmidt Show" (German Late Night Show) - the sidekick of the showmaster drunk one beer in every show (5 times a week) and rated it.
- wyrdness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's not forget La Trappe. It's a Dutch Trappist ale, very similar to the Belgian ones and every bit as good, if not better. It comes in lovely stoneware bottles too.
- Karmalary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you are ever in Kansas City, go to the Boulevard Brewing Company and try their Unfiltered Wheat On Tap. 40 years drinking beer, hundreds of micro-breweries under the belt, I have found no better. Awesome!
- MonolithTMA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's an admirable goal for a casual beer drinker. Bottoms up!
One of my favorites: http://gooseisland.com/beers/pop-ups/3_hexnut.html - Itkovian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Colinmhayes: I think you're confused. To get your hands on a Westvleteren, you need to line up at the brewery. They only produce as much as needed to make enough money as the production costs.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like Sam Adams Brown Ale, but I can only find it in a sampler pack. Duvel has a crazy head, you're basically pouring yourself a glass of foam. I used to like Shiner Bock but it seems too ricey nowadays. Tap Guinness is pretty good with a meal, but the stuff you buy in stores doesn't do it for me.
I'm not nuts about the hoppy, bitter beers that reviewers seem to love, personally...if you're like most reviewers, just pick the most expensive, regional, and high-alcohol black sludge in a bottle you can find. - liquidice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This guy is really going to dig himself into a whole by giving a Becks a 4.5/5 on his first day. Not to say Becks isn't good (it's definately not the best by any means though), but there are thousands of better beer than becks.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's maybe a dozen microbrewed beers in Ontario, Canada, alone that I can recommend off the top of my head. Brick from Waterloo is an especially great one.
- nsummy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I live in Iowa and have been to Granite City, they do have some great microbrews, of course they don't have the sheer quantity of beers that old chicago does. I guess it all evens out then :)
