- dizavin, on 09/26/2008, -0/+52eh... Arcades are pretty much dead. you can find a halfway decent one here and there, but on the whole they aren't nearly what they used to be. the early and mid 90's were the last great years of the Arcade.
- Hetman, on 09/26/2008, -4/+37South Korea is so awesome and north Korea is so *****. It sux, I feel bad for everyone who got stuck in the north. I am not for liberating anyone. "Their are just to many countries to liberate." But it would be awesome to see a unified Korea. Maybe after the death of kim jong their will be some change. Hopefully anyways.
- P5ycHo, on 09/26/2008, -1/+28It's a museum?
- rz8472, on 09/27/2008, -3/+27Where is "Fight the Evil Imperialists in the Name of Dear Leader"?
- IphtashuFitz, on 09/27/2008, -1/+20If you really want to see what it's like inside North Korea go watch all 14 parts of this video (about an hour total). I've seen plenty of photos and read a lot about what it's like inside North Korea but this video really drove it home:
http://www.vbs.tv/shows.php?show=1442318652 - directive0, on 09/27/2008, -0/+18Or a half broken "Cruis'n USA" and that lame deer hunter thing.
- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -0/+18They're still big in Asia. But they're awesome over there. Not just a few machines on a wall.
Strangely enough, biggest arcade in the world is in the US: Funspot. - PhillyMJS, on 09/27/2008, -0/+16Any arcade that has Yie-Ar Kung Fu is okay by me. I ***** loved that game, I used to have the cabinet version in my house.
- krisscofield, on 09/27/2008, -0/+16Arcades in the U.S. are basically half-empty rooms with (if you're lucky) a genuine DDR machine and maybe a 12 year old, beat-up Area 51 game.
- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -3/+18Everything reminds you people of 1984. Which raises the question if you ever watched a different movie or read a book?
- FunyGirl, on 09/26/2008, -5/+17I like this machines but I've never played on them
- Awspire, on 09/27/2008, -3/+15Thats actually training simulator's for the North Korean military. Looks as if they just had an upgrade.
- Haoie, on 09/27/2008, -0/+12I'm surprised the regime allows them at all.
- chrissku, on 09/27/2008, -2/+13You think that's sad...check out their "roller coaster'...
http://flickr.com/photos/fljckr/1027033572/in/phot ... - IphtashuFitz, on 09/27/2008, -0/+11That's not communism in North Korea. That's a combination of totalitarianism and religious fanaticism cloaked in communism. Everybody is brainwashed from the day they are born to revere both Kim Jung Il and Kim Il Sung as gods. There's no true religion there other than blind devotion to the "dear leader". China and Cuba are better examples of what communism is supposed to be.
- futureisours, on 09/27/2008, -0/+10He's dead, Jim.
- Nuhaus, on 09/27/2008, -0/+10Aren't pretty much all arcades sad now? I spent many hours (and quarters) in them as a kid, but have not seen one that looked even remotely interesting for years. Are they even making new arcade games anymore?
- IphtashuFitz, on 09/27/2008, -2/+12Likely military officers and their families who are told to do it whenever any foreigners are there, in an attempt to demonstrate that life is lovely in the Peoples Republic. Any time foreigners visit North Korea they are led around everywhere by government minders, and events are staged wherever they go. Go watch the videos at http://www.vbs.tv/shows.php?show=1442318652 to see just how much they fake everything in an effort to look good for foreign visitors.
- dizavin, on 09/27/2008, -0/+10I'd doubt it. Kim Jong-Il isn't actually president of the country. his father is. and his father is dead.
I am serious. - OC73, on 09/27/2008, -2/+11I know it's Gizmodo, but still, to criticize the quality of arcade games in a concentration camp nation?? Wtf???
- krisscofield, on 09/27/2008, -1/+10Damn. And I used to think keeping Area 51 and Virtua Fighter around was sad.
- blacktriangle, on 09/27/2008, -1/+10How can it be sad with the game "1942"??!!
- zombiedepot, on 09/27/2008, -0/+8It's out of order.
- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -1/+9Finally.. Asians I can beat at DDR.
- ConanTL, on 09/27/2008, -1/+9I remember the good ol' days of playing Street Fighter II, TMNT, NBA Jam, Mortal Combat, The Simpsons arcade game, Contra, ...
- idiotsavant, on 09/26/2008, -1/+9I remember that sub game. It was awful even then as a kid.
- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -0/+7America isn't complaining about North Korea's arcades, like we really give a *****, it's the one guy who decided it was important to make a comparison and then write an article on it. And the majority of Americans aren't super rich or spoiled, I suppose if you compared us to North Koreans or other 3rd world countries we would be, but if you compared us to the British, Germans, etc,. we're just as well off as them, actually they're probably doing better right now.
- captainchris, on 09/27/2008, -0/+7China is a ***** example of communism.
- BabyWookie, on 09/27/2008, -0/+6It probably has something to do with Obama being a Muslim communist.
/s - BigCalhoun, on 09/27/2008, -0/+6Wow, that was a good documentary. Part five with the tea girl really started me thinking...people living in those conditions and that oppressiveness, yet, they remain human and with glimmers of life and happiness.
Wow. I have a whole new perspective on North Koreans. Thanks for sharing!! - ltchimpo, on 09/27/2008, -0/+6The flashing screens would ***** with Robocop's vision when in pursuit.
- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -0/+6Hmm I somehow think North Koreans aren't too worried about the state of their arcades.....and in all fairness, you're holding their arcades to western standards, which are probably going to be better because our kids have too much money to waste on them, assumeing of course if kids even still go to arcades with the invent of some awesome home game consoles and WoW
- IphtashuFitz, on 09/27/2008, -0/+6Considering how both Kim and his father Kim Il Sung are revered as virtual gods and there hasn't been any obvious grooming of a successor, frankly I wouldn't be surprised.
When Kim Il Sung was getting older he publicly groomed Kim Jong Il to eventually succeed him. Now anywhere you go inside North Korea you see photos of the two of them everywhere. I think it's required to have at least one portrait of each, side by side, in one of the main rooms of every house. You'll also find the dual portraits in every public building, on the sides of buildings, etc.
Given that Kim Jong Il hasn't publicly introduced an heir I'd be willing to bet that the government there is scared out of their wits about dealing with life after him. It'd be much easier to put a puppet in his place if he is dead, since it's been reported that he likely has multiple body doubles. If he is dead, and they do replace him with a body double, it'd be smart on their part to start introducing a successor to the North Korean people. It'll be interesting to see if/when/how that happens. - derek20cali, on 09/27/2008, -0/+5Smooth...
- fragmanlivith36, on 09/27/2008, -6/+11Communism sucks.
- vdubski, on 09/27/2008, -0/+5Wha?? Why are arcades banned in detroit? That sounds like some *****.
- HMMcKamikaze, on 09/27/2008, -0/+5Correction: Starcraft *in* their homes.
- doshindude, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4*there
- mediaspree, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4The U.S. has sanctions on it
- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -1/+51983, 84 were the greatest years.
The decline came with better technology and multi player gameplay in the 85-89 with Gauntlet, Rampage and simulator games like After Burner II, Enduro Racer and a pinball renaissance.
The early 90's had the birth of fighting games and everything after that were just sequels. - microview2007, on 09/27/2008, -2/+6Lets collect all of our old first generation xbox'es and send them over to the poor children who don't have enough to eat. At least they'll have games to play and it will take their minds of their hunger pain.
- Ferago, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4You're thinking of South Korea.
- wonkavsn, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4I'm sure Kim Jong Il's computer can.
- SanTe, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3I do. I also need Donkey Kong, Defender, Centipede, Robotron, Burgertime, Crystal Castles, Millipede, Joust, Spy Hunter, Gorf, and Tron, for starters. :)
- jmcneilly, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3In the US, it's called Space Invaders. They changed the sprites though, so that you control The Great Leader who shoots fireballs from his eyes, at the Saddly Pathetic American Imperialists who are dropping Sanction Bombs on you. Occasionally, a sprite flies across the top of the screen in the shape of George Bush. Shooting him earns you 500 bowls of rice... er, points...
- BabyWookie, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3No, it doesn't, if you read about it. It just never been implemented. A totalitarian government, combined with a centrally-planned socialist economy is not communism. The so-called "communist states" just use the promise of eventual communism as a leverage on their people. If you want to see a fictional example of what communism is supposed to be like, watch some Star Trek.
