- Error601, on 11/13/2007, -2/+180Unlike most of the "free speech" nonsense you get on web sites, this one really is. The government can not and should not try to control subject matter. 12 might be a bit borderline for me but 16 is definitely old enough to get some reality education rather. It's far better than the stuff they'll learn on porn sites.
- SoupsMan, on 11/13/2007, -2/+158ZOMG! Kids learning about sex? From their parent? Not a governmental sanctioned place? You have to be kidding me. I was raised the next county over, this is insane. How in rational argument is this possible? You see sex in TV, Video Games, and Movies, but EDUCATING your offspring on what to do and what not to do and be safe yadda yadda is wrong? She shouldn't have pled out. I would have fought it. Unless she hired a hooker from Stevens Point or showed them physically by touching them, on what to do, she has insta-win. I can only bet the retarded catholic D.A. was pressing child endangerment on her. She probably pleaded out so she can see her kids before they turn 18. Disgusting.
- Gugel, on 11/13/2007, -4/+150What happened to freedom of speech?
- AriaStar, on 11/12/2007, -5/+107I disagree. Sorry for the copy/paste, but:
Sex is a natural part of human life. You make it sound shameful. My parents used a few of their own experiences when teaching me and my brother. We are now 26 and 24, and guess what. No kids, and no, no abortions. Our cousins, however, not given education by their parents.... Well, let's just say my brother and I are the ONLY ones to reach 18 without at least one child. Why? Because we were taught about sex, that it's not shameful, and I was even comfortable enough to go to my mom when I wanted birth control pills at 17. - Tyrsson, on 11/13/2007, -10/+109Nonsense. Both sides of the imaginary American political fence are stripping us of our rights. Each side simply has its favorite rights they crusade against.
- Androfire, on 11/13/2007, -11/+94Tasered, shot, and arrested for the stupidest reasons!! When will it all end??
- galeninjapan, on 11/13/2007, -2/+81Yay Big government. Can we arrest people for telling their kids what political candidate to support?
- Audacitor, on 11/13/2007, -2/+71What happened to family privacy?
- lhbaker, on 11/12/2007, -0/+64When talking to your children about sex, it's important to make them think you're actually talking about birds and bees. If you tell them the actual truth, you go to jail.
- MikeonTV, on 11/12/2007, -20/+82While I don't think she can be charged with telling kids about her blow jobs it is just bad judgement. There is such thing and dinner conversation you know!
- Damian91, on 11/12/2007, -1/+62"Excuse me mam, we will decide how to raise your kids."
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -3/+6112 is a bit borderline? how about 16?
I had a major crush on my head-start teacher when I was 4, and was devastated when she got married. I was shop-lifting playboy magazines when I was 8, and already had a 3-way by the time I was 12. I think kids are a lot more sexual than we would like to think.
By the time I got to sex education it was a big "yawn", as i already knew most everything they taught, and then some. incidentally, as the novelty of sex wore off, I got bored with it, settled down and got married. Now I'm on digg all day. - absolutroot, on 11/13/2007, -1/+58she should be able to teach her kids in anyway she sees fit. its not like she sexually assaulted them. She didn't expose them to harmful material--sex is a part of growing up. Exposing them to harmful material would be like, dumping chemicals on them or something.
- vervalsing, on 11/13/2007, -2/+55I think it's on vacation in Ibiza with Habeus Corpus and a few thousand or so ballots from 2000 and 2004.
- thecosmicpope, on 11/12/2007, -0/+50"In the agreement, Smalley pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of exposing a child to harmful material in exchange for the dismissal of a felony charge of exposing a child to harmful descriptions."
Harmful descriptions? Such as the act of reproducing and beautiful act of making love between 2 people? That is harmful? Well bugger me sideways, I must have been getting guns and sex mixed up! - spiffytech, on 11/12/2007, -0/+49I get the feeling that this stuff has always happened, but the internet now allows us to hear about it.
- AriaStar, on 11/12/2007, -2/+5112 isn't borderline. I had to talk my first boyfriend's cousin out of having sex with his girlfriend when he was just 10. The kid at least had the common sense to ask for a condom, which is how I found out about his plan. With sex being everywhere for kids to see, it's important that they learn BEFORE they are active.
I just don't see what the big deal is. Sex is as natural as going to the bathroom, yet is kept this shameful secret. - quakerorts, on 11/13/2007, -1/+44"a felony charge of exposing a child to harmful descriptions" WTF?!
- atdigg, on 11/12/2007, -14/+55leftards? this looks more like rightwing neocon morality imposed on people
- duckstrap, on 11/13/2007, -60/+101Dude, it isn't the left that's arresting people for not conforming to a republican social agenda. Get it straight. Lefties don't care if a mother talks about sex with her kids and wouldn't dream of arresting one. If you want more civil liberties, dude, vote Democrat. If you want the government in your bedroom, a million plus people on the terrorist watch list, your phone calls tapped, your email scanned, government control on birth control, laws about the inside of your wife/daughter's/sister's body, a good dollop of abstinence education plus a government preacher in every school -- look in the mirror, or at least on the conservative side of the tracks.
- NikoKun, on 11/12/2007, -0/+39Is America really THIS afraid of sex? -_- sheeeesh...
- jjesusfreak01, on 11/12/2007, -1/+38So the public schools are allowed to give sex education, and parents no longer can???
- tunapez, on 11/12/2007, -1/+35I snuck a peek at my dad's "deep throat" on the betamax when I was 9. 1st taste of peach at 12, popped my cherry at 13, by 16 I was sitting next to the gal I was bangin in Health class as the teacher showed us how put a condom on a banana.
16 is way to late to be talking to kids about sex, gotta talk to em before the hormones take control, for the boys anyway. - samurimaster, on 11/12/2007, -0/+34"In the agreement, Smalley pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of exposing a child to harmful material in exchange for the dismissal of a felony charge of exposing a child to harmful descriptions"
Stop beating around the bush and say it she committed a thought crime. George Orwell is spinning in his grave. - StarlessKnight, on 11/12/2007, -0/+32Wait wait wait... Children now know what's best for them? I thought America assumed out the gate that children don't know what's best for them until the ages of 18 and or 21? I think you need to make up your mind.
What was inappropriate, exactly? The describing oral sex? The display of a sex toy? I see no mention of fondling involved. No foul play.
Mother: "Sex happens, here's how some do it. This might be important later in life."
Child: "OMG MY SENSITIVE EARS! IGNORANCE IS BLISS!"
Schools can't talk about it, now parents can't talk about. Congratulations, everyone, we lose. - airwalkery2k, on 11/12/2007, -2/+34This isn't left or right. This is fascist, populist crap that a number of politicians both sides seem to agree on.
- pathy, on 11/12/2007, -0/+31Two parts I found interesting,
"...a felony charge of exposing a child to harmful descriptions." And... "The felony charge could have levied a sentence of more than three years in prison and fines up to $10,000."
Exposing a child to harmful descriptions? 3 years in prison? Are you kidding me? - klco, on 11/11/2007, -0/+27Dude what 16 you old is comfortable with talking about sex with parents? That doesn't make it inappropriate.
- AriaStar, on 11/13/2007, -4/+30What is this "freedom of speech" of which you speak?
- sockpuppets, on 11/11/2007, -2/+28She must be pretty strong to be lifting ships.
- natey90210, on 11/12/2007, -8/+33You know what America, ***** you. You did this to yourself.
You wanted robocops to clean up the streets, you wanted lawyers who are "tough on criminals", and you wanted the politicians to pass all the laws to keep you safe.
You are the ones who listen to the fearmongering from the media, you are the ones who cheer when Chris Hansen catches a creep, you are the ones who elect the officials who make the laws, and you are the ones who want big government to protect you.
You did this to yourself, America. Tell yourself that next time some cop with an itchy trigger finger tazers a kid or shoots an innocent person, or next time a diabetic has a seizure and the cops arrest them, or next time airport security harasses you, or next time someone who is innocent becomes a sex offender. - realunderdog, on 11/12/2007, -9/+33This is not about protecting children.
This is not about sex.
This is about criminalizing thought so your mind can be put into the cage that is being prepared for it.
This is not the end.
This is not the beginning of the end.
This is the end of the beginning. - spyd3rweb, on 11/12/2007, -1/+24by 12 its too late.
- thedarkrabbit, on 11/13/2007, -0/+22So... now even parenting is illegal.
One step closer to moving to another country. - Tenlow, on 11/12/2007, -0/+21That law goes into effect in January.
- kaelyiesta, on 11/13/2007, -19/+39And if you want all your liberties, vote libertarian.
- realunderdog, on 11/13/2007, -2/+22Yeah it is like tag team wrestling.
- Cloned, on 11/12/2007, -0/+20What a country we live in. They won't teach kids about it in school, so when a mom tries to do her parental duty, she gets charged with a sex crime.
Unbelievable. - OpenFuture, on 11/14/2007, -3/+23What the ***** happened to free speech?
- AriaStar, on 11/12/2007, -3/+23Because the government only wants kids to learn about abstinence. Sad, sad day when sex education has to go underground.
Another one for the pile of reason to go to Canada. - StarlessKnight, on 11/12/2007, -0/+19Harmful Descriptions... So when do we start sending most of our children to jail for swearing? Some of those words have sexual connotations too.
- AriaStar, on 11/12/2007, -3/+22So the government sees it as wrong for her to teach her sons about alternatives to intercourse that could lead to teen pregnancy. But of course, let us not forget this is a government that will only allow schools to teach abstinence. Hell shall come to those who want their children educated by knowledgeable adults rather than other kids or porn sites!!
- VitriolAndAngst, on 11/12/2007, -6/+25Aparently, it is against the law to be a Liberal now. My parents talked to me about everything -- and guess what, when I went to high school and college, it was always me acting responsibly and all the kids from conservative parents wound up tigher than a string that got into trouble.
It must have been a culture shock for all the church going folks; "You mean, this lady didn't fill her kids with fear and lies? How could she raise them proper? Throw the book at that heathen!" - EXreaction, on 11/12/2007, -0/+19In a world where parents can't teach their kids...
- Zarokima, on 11/12/2007, -0/+18Sex education for me (took it two years ago) was a one-week part of health class. We went through the development of the baby for four days and on the last how sex is bad unless you're married because otherwise you get AIDS, herpes, etc. and die.
I learned a lot more in 10-minutes of the talk with my parents. - benplaut, on 11/11/2007, -1/+19The first rule about freedom of speech is...
- nosecohn, on 11/12/2007, -0/+18Does anyone know what she claims to have told the kids? In the article, she's quoted as saying, "That is what I'm being charged with, but that is not what I did." Well then, what DID she do (or say)?
On a bit of a tangent, it's astounding how poor journalism has become. Every day I read articles such as this one which fail to ask or answer the most obvious questions on the topic. - Randinn, on 11/12/2007, -1/+19here has to be a point where the goverment needs to stay out of it and really, even if it was in poor taste, the goverment had no right interfering...
- whatthefu, on 11/12/2007, -4/+22Title is very misleading, as it wasn't an "educational sex talk" like most of us would think. While perhaps what she said to her kids wasn't in the best taste, it's idiotic to arrest her over it. Absolutely idiotic. "Smalley pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of exposing a child to harmful material..." a dildo is harmful material?
- BoMEpsilon, on 11/12/2007, -1/+18You should narrate the intros for movie trailers.
