- malanic, on 03/29/2009, -0/+50Kudos to the cops who charged him. There may have been temptation to look after one of their own, and they may face some scorn from their peers, but I'd give them two thumbs up.
- inactive, on 03/29/2009, -2/+47A 33 year veteran of the police force, and I bet that this is not his first time doing something like this.
- arcangelgabriel, on 03/29/2009, -1/+35As a veteran police officer let me just say this.
Ahem,
Thank you so much officer. Like we need any more asshat ***** cops to make us look bad.
Folks, we're not all like this, some of us actually do our job and
Don't beat people senseless
Don't tase folks without reason
Don't shoot people because they reached for their wallet
Don't be a dick to the public
etc.
Thank you
Detective David E.Gabriel - redwolfb14, on 03/29/2009, -0/+11Nothing is going to happen to him, he had his arresting privileges suspended and he'll probably be benched for a while and then fade away into retirement. If it was me or you, normal civilians who committed such an infraction. The judge would be expressing how irreparable and disgusting we are as human beings. How we could of injured and killed someone and how we may need some jail time to think it over depending on circumstances. In the meantime we will have our privilege to you know.. DRIVE.. suspended.
That will probably never happen here.. - NinjaJoshy, on 03/29/2009, -1/+11Good cops who are able to stop any sort of corruption (this instance should be considered corruption since he was operating illegally under the color of his authority) should be honored, both by the precinct they work for, and by the community they work in. There has to be some reward/punishment system to encourage 'good' officers to turn in their 'bad' co-workers, and to discourage them from turning a blind eye to the situation.
Punishments for what this officer did should be much more severe than if he were a normal citizen because he knew exactly what he was doing, and is in fact an expert as to why what he was doing is irresponsible. Judge's need to crack down on this sort of thing, as do police agencies before more people lose faith in them.
The only reason the police have authority over the normal citizen is because we give them that authority. We give them that authority because we trust them to uphold society's rules, no matter who it is who breaks them. Once we no longer have that trust in them, they no longer have authority over us, and become completely irellevent.
Simple put: 'Bad' cops should be punished more than the normal person, 'Good' cops who do nothing to prevent these activities should also be punished, and 'Good' cops who stop this sort of behavior should be commended. - rabidDice, on 03/29/2009, -0/+10A police officer was caught for a DUI in Toronto after she smashed her cruiser while being 3 times over the legal limit
http://www.canada.com/news/story.html?id=1262261
"she left in her car at about 6:15 p.m. and drove up onto a centre median, knocking down a road sign, briefly heading into oncoming traffic."
Happens all the time. Apparently she even got to keep her job. - STBAT25, on 03/29/2009, -2/+12Stuff like this has been happening for a long time. It's just now we have people posting it on the internet where others can hear about it.
- TheDudeDean, on 09/13/2009, -1/+11Seems like a rash of cops doing stupid stuff is happening now. Can't wait for the third one to happen.
- shadowspawn, on 03/29/2009, -3/+12It's not that there is a rash of cops doing stupid *****. They always have been doing stupid *****. So have non-cops, for that matter.
Now with the advent of hyper-connected and instantaneous connectivity with a broad spectrum-outreach media audience, it's just easier to show how bad the bad apples really are.
The sad thing is... well, the so-called "good cops" do nothing about it. That's what gets me. The few good ones that could help, don't. One big frat club; the only difference between a cop and a criminal is one has a badge.
It's the good cops who actually lay the hammer down on the bad ones that make me feel good about the police. It's just so damn rare that it happens.
And the only reason, this one lucky time, a bad cop got busted is because he crashed his car and the others had to do paperwork. Probably pissed at him for it. - tbrand86, on 03/29/2009, -0/+8I grew up in Montgomery County. Great place, minus the police. We have the highest taxes in the country and the lowest crime rate. he Because of this, the police do nothing but spend money on useless gadgets like radar-gun sound devices to listen to patrons leaving a bar to see if they are going to drive drunk (Had it happen to me several times while home from college). They even have an "underage drinking task force" that has not been well received by the community as it has created more issues than success on many occasions. Good riddance.
- theavenger2, on 03/29/2009, -0/+8The real problem with this situation is not that the cop drove drunk, but that he will barely face any consequences. Cops get away with all kinds of ***** and never get in trouble. Usually the worst that can happen is they lose their job. Rarely, one will be prosecuted, but even then they get minimal sentencing.
Example: the cop who beat the ***** out of that teen girl in Seattle is facing a 4th degree (1st is worst) misdomeaner assault charge. He faces 1 year in jail MAX. This cop is "under investigation." This is code for wait till the incident blows over and people forget about it, then let's either drop the charges or give this guy 24 hours of probation.
Cops really are above the law. - Harboggles, on 03/29/2009, -0/+7***** the police?
- jitterbits, on 03/29/2009, -4/+10Pleasure to meet you! You are a rare breed, if for no other reason than not defending these sort of actions.
Out of curiosity, have you ever encountered any sort of questionable activity by fellow officers on duty, and if so, what was your reaction? - Postalwrker27, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6"The accident happened just after 11p.m."
"Official Vocabulary no longer refers to car crashes as accidents: They are now called collisions because "accident" implies there's nobody to blame" - Nicholas Angel - bulldog764, on 03/29/2009, -0/+6You're gonna have to calm down there buddy
- zerodepth, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5GO MOCO WHOOOO!
- SniperZero, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5They should have tazed him. Since they seem to taze everyone else.
- Gndoab, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5MoCo > HoCo.
- Gndoab, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5He's not complaining about cops catching drunk drivers, he's complaining about the lack of crime (good problem to have, I guess), and the amount of money the police force gets. Since they have nothing better to do they sit around at radar check points all day and generally harass the public as much as is possible.
They do very little real police work. - malanic, on 03/29/2009, -1/+5After praising the arresting officers, you cut them back down and accuse them of revenge without any evidence;
"And the only reason, this one lucky time, a bad cop got busted is because he crashed his car and the others had to do paperwork. Probably pissed at him for it."
You may have had a point if someone else was involved or injured, however he crashed into a barrier. I'm sure it would have been easy to blame it on a stray animal, and actually reduce the amount of paperwork by not having to lay any charges.
I would have dug you up until you made that unsubstantiated, and unambiguous accusation against cops who deserve some merit. It looks like it's a case of 'damned if you do and damned if you don't' for them. - jalbinson, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4the moco popo issued me a citation when I was 17 for drinking one beer at my friend's house in the basement. I blew a 0.009. It was pretty rough.
- jitterbits, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4It actually was just meant as an honest question. I was wondering if he'd ever encountered anything untoward from his fellow officers. It was not an attack in any way.
- Postalwrker27, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4Why? Be more constructive with your feedback.

- Philbert, on 03/30/2009, -0/+3Whew! I live in Montgomery County so I thought it was here. Different state though.
- DarkLaughingMan, on 03/30/2009, -0/+3Same here. There was also an issue a while back about them not paying speeding tickets (they were off duty when they were caught by the cameras).
- mksmothers, on 03/30/2009, -0/+3this is kind of rare isn't it? I mean, cops breaking laws AND getting arrested?
- faskippy, on 03/30/2009, -0/+3That's not the kind of "serve" they meant, Mr. Popo.
- XkenX87, on 03/30/2009, -0/+3?=!
- jitterbits, on 03/29/2009, -0/+3That's true. I wonder if his driving privileges were suspended, or if he even had to go through the normal rigmarole to get them reinstated for work purposes like civilians do.

The captain is not pleased. - Sublimin4L, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2I was driving from Frederick to Shady Grove on Sat. and noticed the median they're talking about. Thought it was because of an accident at first. I wonder if anyone thought about helping him.
- KrazyMon2, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2I wonder how high he scored.
- miquonranger031, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2Oh, I was worried that this was Montgomery County, PA (where I live).
- yellowaeroplane, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2Please don't feed the troll.
- waleedo, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2way to lead by example
- steelreserve211, on 03/29/2009, -1/+3I live in Mont. Co. Not surprised at all.
- rrouse, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2I wonder what the reason was that he was drinking?

- Julian88888888, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2because with accidents there is blame, and nicholas angel is an idiot.
- Shootfast, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2Flea Market Montgomery?
- TomTruelle, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2I understand, I meant it in a "do you honestly believe a detective is going to rat out his fellow counterparts on a public forum" kinda way. Sounded like a strange question to me..
- miquonranger031, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2Me too!
I didn't see this before I commented separately, though. - aries3161, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2My Hero!
- LoveTheCoast, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2No cynicism whatsoever. 33 years on the force and one of two things is certain: you have a lot of friends, or you have a lot of not-friends. With multiple family members and friends that are cops I know one thing: they take care of their own.
I stand by my original statement. - keraneuology, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2It is not unheard of for people to "forget" to mention the bad cop's employer on the arrest record - anybody want to guess that there will be no mention that this drunkie is a cop on the report?
