Because of it being illegal, and a want for it in society, it made every day, hard working guy/gal-next-door a criminal. It nurtured and fed numerous criminal organizations who did not care much for the law nor the safety of the consumers so when (not if) a bad batch of booze was distributed, there was very little that could be done.
Prohibition of anything does nothing but benefit those who are willing to break the law for profit and force otherwise good, law abiding citizens to become criminals.

However, if you legalize said commodity, legitimate businesses are then able to sell the commodity. Criminals are looking for a quick, fast buck and high profit margins. When faced with competition from legitimate businesses, their profit margins drop significantly and they stop trafficking in said commodity.
This is exactly why the alcohol prohibition law in the US was repealed. It wasn't working to curb the drinking of alcohol and the violence surrounding the black market became unbearable.
If we want the violence around the drug war to cease, we need to legalize, regulate, and tax drugs like we do with nicotine and alcohol.
