Man hit by police Taser: "That's all you got?"

syracuse.com — Syracuse police shot a man with a Taser early this morning after he challenged them to a fight, but the 250-pound suspect pulled the device's electric darts out of his abdomen, laughed and said, "That's all you got?"

  • pinguwin, on 03/23/2008, -1/+28Some said it's a good way to get shot, I still think that the cops need to be careful when using deadly weapons. Going from the article, yes he was surly and confrontational, but just because this is true, doesn't mean that deadly force is ok. There are occasions where police are going to get bruised and so be it, but the first response shouldn't be to kill. If the guy was tased, challenged them to a fight, grabbed a knife and lunged at them or pulled out a gun, that is a case for using a firearm. I'm not making judgments on whether a taser was justified but the police did show some restraint, to their credit, that they didn't immediately escalate the situation by pulling out guns (and I'm often of of the "F*** the police" commenters :-) Haidoken says what to do if the taser doesn't work? Well, they would do what they did before they had tasers as part of their arsenal.

    I've been on a ride-along with a cop and went in with a suspicious attitude about cops and this particular cop impressed me. Instead of being a bad-ass with people, he talked with them and de-escalated situations rather than upped the tension, and told me it works out better that way for everyone involved. That said, the guy arrested in this story sounds like a douche, but his comment did make me smirk.
