The greatest ending would have been if the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission had billed him $20 for pulling him out of the water. - HCT01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37speak for your self
- wqwert, on 10/12/2007, -9/+46What a dumbass
- rotten777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38It's not that big of a fall. I'm 20-30 minutes from the bridge. It's honestly not that bad. I've done it for free ;)
- xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28He already had the broken collar bone before. All he got from this was cuts and scrapes.
Sounds like fun, though. I was really hoping it was some random dude who jumped after the money, though, rather than the person who lost it. Would make a good commercial.... - wingzinco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Poor chap....only rolling tobacco?
- paulwilde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Please don't stretch my internets.
- datastorageguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22In other news:
Man arrested for throwing $20 bills of bridge just to watch poor inner city types jump in water. - psYcon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I have tolerated being put on hold for 40 minutes by my phone company so that I could shave $20 off my bill. I'm nearly as bad as this guy.
- insanechub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18$20 bucks says he was on his way to the liquor store
- MaddDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Is everyone here that rich that they wouldn't work for $20? Diving 50 feet into water isn't *that* big of a deal.
- mbromley, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1950 feet does not deserve a DIGG
Now if it was 100feet, into a shallow pool of beer filled with drunken stingrays I would digg this in a second. - NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Your clogging the tubes!
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1450 feet into water isnt that bad... if it was 50 feet into oncoming traffic thats another story...
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Jumping 50 feet into water is not a big deal at all. Hell, I do it for fun, jumping off cliffs in the summertime.
Nevertheless, I'd want to know how deep the water was before I jumped into it. I doubt I'd jump off a bridge into untested waters for $20. Jumping 50 feet into water will absolutely kill you if the water isn't very deep. - ToRoE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12If he is so broke, why is he counting his twenty's while walking across a windy bridge..
Que Red Foreman: Dumb Ass. - heavensblade23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13 "I got my money back, hell yeah,"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1250 feet is more like 4 stories. Most ceilings are 10 feet with a 2 ft gap.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13i'll give you $20 for the later...
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I jumped 238,857 MILES from the MOON! Beat that!
- broodlinger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'm pretty sure I've jumped 50 feet into the water for nothing.
- rotten777, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12exactly. it's FUN doing stuff like that. and to get paid for it, even better!
these spoiled desk jockeys don't seem to enjoy adventure. - kendawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10That probably took him about 10 minutes or less. That's equivalent to $120/hr. $120/hr is not really that crazy for tough work.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Damn, I was hoping for a new Darwin award winner :o(
- Rounin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You'd jump after your gas money too.
- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11and here I am rolling tobacco in $100 bills... that poor chap
- gaberowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7v_final=sqrt(v_initial^2+2*a*x)
x=50 feet, or 15.24 meters
a=9.81m/s (acceleration due to gravity of course)
v_initial=0 (most likely)
v_final=17.3 m/s
So, uh, 15 m/s isn't that far off of an estimate, especially if you factor in wind resistance... 17.3 m/s is about 38.6 miles per hour... - SnowBladerX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Im not really sure why this is news... its not like the guy was seriously hurt or anything, if he had died it would have been a big deal..
- Xoligy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Can I have your address?
- Rebulator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I'd jump for it. 50 feet really isn't that much, and I have expenses.
- vanmeir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Twenty bucks is a lot of money when you're broke."
One wonders if this sort of judgment is related to the fact that he's broke. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6LOL
Well, even $20 doesn't come for free. Most I'd do is curse God, point up at the sky and say "You! You planned this all along, didn't you?" LOL Damn fate...
Just kidding.
Hey, when you're broke, $20 IS a lot of money. It can mean the difference between a 99 cent meal at McDonald's or starving for a week. - BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7What it really is it that people overestimate how high they are actually jumping from. It's really easy to look at a cliff and say "wow, that looks like it's 50 feet tall", but odds are when you actually measure it you'll find it's more like 20 feet - which really isn't too big a deal (though it can seem like it when you're in the air... or right before you jump)
- mbromley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6We Jump from 80 all the time into a lake.
Mind you we are not diving, and we wear shoes. If you dont wear shoes it hurts like hell. One of our friends had his arms out when he hit the water and his arms were red for a few days.. He damaged something for sure. - tito13kfm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What kind of cheap shoes do you wear that fall apart after jumping in to water? Take them off when you get to shore and let them dry out. You city folks sure are weird.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Tobacco? What are you, poor? ;)
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5u dont dive from that high u jump feet first...
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A regulation diving platform is 10 meters. That's 32 feet. There are people who make 32 foot dives dozens of times a day, *every day*.

Diving 50 feet for $20?
Bad idea? yes. Guaranteed death? Not really. - splatnik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+450 ft is scary but it's not that big of a deal. I've done 55ft for free (with a bunch of shutins and girls and we actually measured it with a 100ft tape measure) and 4 of my friends have jumped off of a 75ft bridge which was a MUCH bigger deal. Two of them sustained back injuries on the 75ft jump in addition to a nice lake enema. I've heard that over 100ft and you're looking at a 50% chance of death, not sure if that's true or not.
I say it's lame this made the news at all, let alone that someone scored $20 off it... - budfox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Natural Selection....failed.
- tito13kfm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3We jump off at Nelson Ledges Quarry Park all the time. I would estimate it at a conservative35- 40ft high. It's honestly not that bad, it can hurt if you land wrong, but just some minor stinging on your feet if you land straight up and down. An extra 10-15ft for $20 does not seem out of the question for me. If I was from the area and knew it was a fairly deep river, that had a decent current I wouldn't think twice about jumping in.
It's not the height of the fall that hurts it's the surface tension of the water. Still water hurts significantly more than choppy water. - SirThom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That, my friends, is a valid reason why you shouldn't count your money in public.
- sputza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How poor would you have to be to jump into a river to retrieve your $20? Most people have a cellphone and a wallet that would get wet and ruined. It's not worth it unless you are dirt poor.
- umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6What they didn't mention is that he was on meth and actually thought he flew down to the 20$'s. "When the officer told him he had a broken collarbone he responded, "Bitches, I'm invincible" and proceeded to break all of his fingers on his left hand, and then ran off at an extraordinarily fast pace."
- gabeN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm fairly confident that all the people saying, "50 feet isnt that bad" have never jumped from that height into water.
I used to be a diver. The highest platform is the 10meter board (33ft). I know from first hand expirence that if your entry into the water is even slightly off from that height serious injury can result. I'm talking broken bones bruises and concussions here... and that's from slightly more than half the height were talking about!
I have no dobut that from 50' the fall alone could kill you, let alone the possibility of being knocked unconsious and drowning, or being swept away by a current, or hitting the bottom.
I probably would do it for fun, in a controlled enviroment, with my shoes on... but I'm not going to jump off random 50' bridges for $20... - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The article could have been clearer about that.
- Worktruck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Better article on the guy and it has a picture of him:
http://www.heraldtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060919/NEWS/609190320/1006/SPORTS
Ever other story I've read says he claims to be homeless so I doubt he had anything on him was worth more than that 20 dollar bill. - jbestrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So i'm wondering if he had a cell phone on him or if he had anything else on him that is FUBAR'd now that will cost him to replace or fix. What about his shoes?
- GhostToon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey $20 is $20. I say good for him. If I could swim I probably would have done the same. As long as it doesn't put others in danger I don't see the problem.
- gilbert2048, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i live 30min. from were this happened it was in are local papers on like Monday
