- LilJimmyNordin, on 05/12/2009, -2/+59A single photo would have done just as well. There's really nothing to see in the video.
- Tarkaan, on 05/13/2009, -1/+22You'd be astounded by how common this is. There are similar photos on the wall of just about every major airport bag room showing the hazards of:
FOD
Misplaced Tubs
Errant Baggage Carts (like the one in the video)
And my personal favourite: When the flight attendants forget to disarm the emergency slides before letting maintenance open the doors... Costs $2m every time - $50,000 for a new slide, the rest for installation and re-re-re-re inspection, training, and aircraft downtime. "Okay, Jimmy, I'll just open this door over the wing so you can get the wet-vac in here <BOOM!!> WHOA!!!!" - inactive, on 05/13/2009, -0/+20Firefly anyone?
"Darn."

The jumbo doesn't need all 3 engines to fly.

- garrettg84, on 05/13/2009, -0/+11Agreed, I fully expected to see it happen, not just the aftermath.

http://s.wsj.net/media/0512pod17.jpg - Virgule, on 05/13/2009, -0/+7These engines can easily blow a school bus away and by blow away I mean like a leaf in the wind so I am not surprised by what I just saw.
Also, buried as inaccurate for "Los Angeles airliner" then "Japan Airlines" right under. - canada778, on 05/13/2009, -0/+7you mean 4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_gpPbpONK4 - algaeturd, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5Airplane sucks metal container into engine; video of incident also sucks.
- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -0/+5Where's the shower of sparks and the frenzied cries of the throwers? I mean baggage handlers.
- bipolarruledout, on 05/13/2009, -0/+4You get the "move along, nothing to see here" factor with the video.
- DirtyVicar, on 05/13/2009, -0/+4Let me edit that real quick:
Los Angeles airliner sucks metal box into engine [NO VIDEO]
There, fixed it. - Gibletoid, on 05/13/2009, -0/+4I sit corrected.
- Hellahulla, on 05/13/2009, -0/+3You got all of that from a short video and 10 lines of text?
Wow. - Pinkertinkle, on 05/13/2009, -0/+3Good thing they didn't take off or the passengers on the left side of the plane woulda ***** a brick each.
- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -1/+4Today we are offering free luggage shredding
- VikzAtl, on 05/13/2009, -0/+3This goes to prove you cant fit a square (well sort of) into a circle.
- _skin_, on 05/13/2009, -0/+3Yeah, I agree, but everyone would have wondered, and probably would have wanted to see the video.
- brandnewx, on 05/13/2009, -0/+2I totally didn't expect to see the box is still there in the engine. :D
- mark925, on 05/13/2009, -0/+2It's too bad we didn't see the sparks like that from when the box was sucked in. It would have made the video somewhat worth watching.
- bipolarruledout, on 05/13/2009, -0/+2Life's a bitch ain't it?

- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -1/+2Captain.....we're gonna need to recharge the dilithium crystals.
- bluesman3535, on 05/13/2009, -1/+2Advantage vs Disadvantage! Example One: 8-track tape vs CD. 8-track tape is not as crisp, interrupts a song, but works trouble free for hundreds of plays until the tape wheels stick and tape breaks. CD scratches easily and becomes worthless but if kept pristine sounds superior. 2. Propeller Airplane--flies slow, but chops flimsy aluminum box into a million pieces. Pilot continues as passengers laugh. Jet Plane sucks box into engine, gets towed like a pansy for repairs with pissed-off passengers waiting for another flight.
- bipolarruledout, on 05/13/2009, -1/+2Kind of a mean blow against Japan!
- forbjok, on 05/13/2009, -0/+1Don't waste your time with the video. Nothing happens in it. Just footage of the plane rolling very slowly on the ground with the box sticking out of the engine. A simple picture would have been better.
- smartassCanuck, on 05/13/2009, -0/+11: What's a gorram?
2: Only the flight crew can control the engine, so it's not the tower or ground crew's responsibility to shut the thing down.
3: It got sucked into the engine after engine start, which happens AFTER the plane is pushed back from the gate, likely while the plane was taxing. Shutting down the engine was a non-issue as the obstruction likely caused enough of a blockage to stop the engine from running (without a LOT of air a turbine will stall.)
4: You shouldn't make such brash generalizations about something you obviously know little to nothing about.
This is the fault of the baggage/cargo handler that left the container in the path of a taxiing 747, it's likely also somewhat the fault of the pilot/first officer who taxied too close to the container, but since the outboard engines of a 747 are a LONG way from pilot and taxiways should be clear of foreign objects, I'd only place a small part of the blame on the pilot/first officer. - Shipyaad, on 05/13/2009, -5/+3Well, I guess it's better than this:

FOD is bad, people. - errorunknown, on 05/13/2009, -9/+7That "sucks"
- EvelynKillface, on 05/13/2009, -4/+1So...nobody at all, in the plane or the tower or on the tarmac, thought of TURNING OFF THE GORRAM ENGINE?
Every single one of those fools should pay for the repairs. From the baggage handler who put the box there, to the pilot who decided it was OK to taxi with an unknown, unstable obstruction VISIBLY BLOCKING the turbine intake, to the FAA who didn't command them to emergency stop.
ALL OF THESE PEOPLE FAILED AT THEIR JOBS. AT THE SAME TIME. WITH DOZENS OF PASSENGERS ON BOARD. Hope you feel safe on your next flight!! - sajuuk, on 05/13/2009, -8/+5Thats gotta suck.
- JimmyIkon, on 05/13/2009, -5/+2try a person getting sucked into a jet engine. And he survived.
