    FOD
    Misplaced Tubs
    Errant Baggage Carts (like the one in the video)
    And my personal favourite: When the flight attendants forget to disarm the emergency slides before letting maintenance open the doors... Costs $2m every time - $50,000 for a new slide, the rest for installation and re-re-re-re inspection, training, and aircraft downtime. "Okay, Jimmy, I'll just open this door over the wing so you can get the wet-vac in here <BOOM!!> WHOA!!!!"

Example One: 8-track tape vs CD. 8-track tape is not as crisp, interrupts a song, but works trouble free for hundreds of plays until the tape wheels stick and tape breaks. Pilot continues as passengers laugh. Jet Plane sucks box into engine, gets towed like a pansy for repairs with pissed-off passengers waiting for another flight.

  • forbjok, on 05/13/2009, -0/+1Don't waste your time with the video. Nothing happens in it. Just footage of the plane rolling very slowly on the ground with the box sticking out of the engine. A simple picture would have been better.

    2: Only the flight crew can control the engine, so it's not the tower or ground crew's responsibility to shut the thing down.
    3: It got sucked into the engine after engine start, which happens AFTER the plane is pushed back from the gate, likely while the plane was taxing. Shutting down the engine was a non-issue as the obstruction likely caused enough of a blockage to stop the engine from running (without a LOT of air a turbine will stall.)
    4: You shouldn't make such brash generalizations about something you obviously know little to nothing about.

    This is the fault of the baggage/cargo handler that left the container in the path of a taxiing 747, it's likely also somewhat the fault of the pilot/first officer who taxied too close to the container, but since the outboard engines of a 747 are a LONG way from pilot and taxiways should be clear of foreign objects, I'd only place a small part of the blame on the pilot/first officer.

    Every single one of those fools should pay for the repairs. From the baggage handler who put the box there, to the pilot who decided it was OK to taxi with an unknown, unstable obstruction VISIBLY BLOCKING the turbine intake, to the FAA who didn't command them to emergency stop.

    ALL OF THESE PEOPLE FAILED AT THEIR JOBS. AT THE SAME TIME. WITH DOZENS OF PASSENGERS ON BOARD. Hope you feel safe on your next flight!!
